Remember when Gambit was supposed to be released in October 2016? Well, the movie currently has a release date of February 14th, 2019 but whether or not it can meet that is now completely up in the air. Deadline and a number of outlets have confirmed that Gore Verbinski is the latest filmmaker to walk away from the project but this is said to be an amicable split which is a result of scheduling issues.
Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman quit the Marvel movie over creative differences but it's hard not to wonder if there may be more to this story than meets the eye. For now, Channing Tatum remains attached to star and the studio is presumably looking for a replacement (lucky number four, eh?).
Interestingly, the trade notes that "Lizzy Caplan was in talks to co-star" so it's possible that she may have also decided against starring in the long-delayed release. With Disney in the process of acquiring 20th Century Fox, it's getting hard to imagine that Gambit will ever happen and this is another step in the wrong direction. What do you guys think?
