James Mangold's THE WOLVERINE To Be Set After ALL X-MEN Films

Previously believed to be a prequel to the X-Men trilogy, the director of The Wolverine, James Mangold himself has confirmed that the newest X-Men spin-off film actually takes place AFTER all of the previous films! Details after the jump...

Within the pages of the latest Empire Magazine, director James Mangold has confirmed that his upcoming film -- The Wolverine -- takes place after all of the previous X-Men films, including The Last Stand. As we saw in the final film, Logan was forced to murder Jean Grey because she could not control the Phoenix's power, Professor Xavier and Scott Summers were believed to be deceased, and the team had disbanded. With rumors of some of the original cast returning for X-Men: Days of Future Past, it remains to be seen whether or not this film will tie-in to that storyline. Below are comments from James Mangold himself on the timeline placement.

"Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all. Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him."

"That’s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline.I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie."

Empire is set to debut a new photo from the film, and more juicy details as well. Stay tuned to ComicBookMovie.com for more information on The Wolverine.

This also confirms that the film isn't "stand alone" and is part of the previous "continuity".

@grif did the movie Wolverine ever regain his memory? I wish I could get amnesia, then I could forget X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: The Last Stand...

Still need a real man to play Wolverine!
Wish Dougray Scott didnt have to keep shooting MI2.
He would have been so much more suited to the role.
Im Australian but still hate Hugh Jackman as Wolverine :-)

ugh.

these films are a complete mess. why couldn't we just have a regular x-men franchise? right now we have a prequel series, running side by side with a wolverine series which was a prequel to the original series (and also set before the prequel series, and also kind of side by side it) but now it is a sequel to the original series. why's it all so scattered? and why hasn't this been rebooted yet? i mean, everyone else is doing it (spidey, superman, hulk, FF, daredevil, batman etc), and the x-men franchise is the one that needs it the most

i'm waiting for days of future past to wipe out all this nonsense and start all over properly this time. and yeah, that means i'll be skipping this.

@jingorot actually X-Men Origins Wolverine is set after X-Men First Class. X-Men Origins is set in the late 1970s (although the opening scenes are obviously set like 200 years before), while First Class is set in 1962.

What!!!... Well I spose it could be worse. I was personally hoping for an amnesia ridden James/Logan set after weapon x and before the whole team-up stuff. Would've been nice if it eluded to or flashbacked to more ov a comic authentic origins story while also focusing mostly on the Japan story line. But, in saying that at least it's set in untouched territory I guess. But does this still qualify it as a standalone film or was James more referring to the film being separate from wolvie origins?

YES! I F'ING KNEW IT! Ok NOW I'm stoked. It's actually following the comic story. I was so frustrating hearing people talk about it being a prequel. Hello?! Did any of y'all even read the comic story which this film is based off of? It takes place AFTER Logan has already met the X-Men.

@Monstalova
Your kiddin' right? Dougray Scott is more manly than Jackman?
First off what do you even mean? Sounds kinda gay for a guy to say unless your a chick..are you female?

Let's just argue the point,Jackman is a solid actor but Dougray always looks like he's got a "taking a crap" expression on his face when you see him,if you can find a movie he's in..not a very in demand actor really since he's very boring to watch.

Jackman has a great "mean face" when angry, great speaking voice & is very well built.
Dougray...not so much. Sorry bub,Jackman is a great Wolverine despite his height & your weak opinion.
Hope this movie is real good, wish it was R-rated for violence.

but I thought X-men First Class wrote off X3 and Origins from continuity. Man the X-men films are becoming more complicated as the X-men comics

If I said it once, I'll say it again. Make X-Men origins Wolverine a memory implant. It was just one of the memories that weapons X implanted into Logans brain. Quick & easy and at least it coincides with what we know happened to Logan while he was in that submersion tank with those funky goggles.
In regards to X3. Make it one of the illusions created by Jason Wyndgarde. Again, simple and easy.

Then we can create a coalescent Marvel Universe

This should be interesting. I'm one of those people that really likes the X-Men films. I'm not saying that Last Stand and X-Men Origins were good, cause at best, they are average. First Class is definitely the best and I feel it shouldn't get rebooted just yet, despite continuity problems. I have some high hopes for, The Wolverine. It should be really good.

Jackman is an almost perfect wolvie IMO. if he was shorter and had more hair and bulk he'd be stop on :-)

Why are you people freaking out over the fact that it's not a prequel? This tells nothing of the movies! Hell, it even HELPS THE MOVIE OUT.

Stop thinking about the movie audience for once, you are a comic book nerd, you can enjoy this movie because you know what's up. Hell, you know what? JUST IGNORE WOLVERINE ORIGINS IF YOU WANT. We already set up that X-Men First Class is in a parallel timeline! Hell maybe this movie MAY JUST LEAD UP to X-Men Days of Future Past! X-Men 3 ended horribly, Rogue thinks it's actually a good idea to lose her powers (which would make Bobby go into a depression probably), Jean, Cyclops, and Xavier are dead, not to mention people would be more afraid of mutants than they would ever be considering there was a large scale attack of them and only 8 good mutants to defend them! There's still a chance that this could all be put into thought in X-Men Days of Future Past! James Mangold is a GOOD DIRECTOR. He's not an unknown like Gavin Hood was!

Look, here's what I'm saying:

Stop forcing your negative thoughts into all of this, X-Men 1 was okay, X-Men 2 was decent, First Class was great, and with the knowledge of what this universe is so far (or even what it will be), just go enjoy the movie.

Your only legitimate complaints are in casting, but all this talk on how it screws up the X-Men franchise - no, it won't.

DrainBamage - 10/25/2012, 4:27 AM
Well, I guess that gives some credence to the rumors that Famke was going to have a cameo or two in the new movie.

Personally, I think this is good news. No prequel continuity issues to worry about.
Viltrumite
Viltrumite - 10/25/2012, 4:36 AM
I'd actually been betting on this being set after the original movies, but the only thing I'm confused as is: is The Last Stand still considered canon? And if it is, is The Wolverine connected to the continuity of First Class? Because although FC does work as a prequel to X1 and X2, albeit with some slight retcons, it and The Last Stand really are incompatible.
siggisuperman
siggisuperman - 10/25/2012, 4:39 AM
man.. It's becoming really confusing. Too many X-men movies made without a proper direction for the franchise. I hope they fix it all with Days of future past

Wait... yeah StuckInPanels has a good point, First Class contradicted almost everything in Origins and Last Stand, especially with Charles being paralyzed by the end of the film.

I was telling my roommate just yesterday that I felt like this is what was happening. This honestly makes the most sense. I feel that this was done for a specific reason and that when it call comes down to it we are going to be happy with not only the movie but with how they use the movie.

T:TDW>>>IM3>>S:MOS>The Wolverine

This is not a big improvement for me. I liked x2 and First Class for what they were but in order to "Fix" the X-men franchise these 2 movies (The Wolverine & X-men DOFP) need to be perfect and work in unison to clear up the continuity. I dont see how this can Make up for X3 and XO:W but im still hoping for the best. If these 2 fail then they just need to give X-men to Marvel.
