Lauren Shuler-Donner Says X-Men 4 Is A Long Time Away, Updates On The Wolverine & Deadpool

The Producer reveals some more about the status of two highly anticipated spin-offs from the disappointing X-Men Origins: Wolverine. She also says X4 might happen but "way in the future"..

We have heard quite a bit from Donner over the last few days as X-Men: First Class geared up for it's Blu-ray release. And speaking to Popcornbiz she doesn't reveal too much we haven't heard already but does elaborate on the status of both The Wolverine and Deadpool, claiming that she would not make a solo movie of "The Merc With The Mouth" without Ryan Reynolds. She also says that if we do ever see X-Men 4 it will be a long time away.

“I’m focusing on ‘The Wolverine’ and possibly ‘Deadpool.’ That's enough for now. I don't think we want to over-saturate the market. I think if we had six 'X-Men' movies out there nobody would want to see them.”

“We're figuring out where we're going to shoot it and working on the budget and the script and all that sort of stuff – we're in good prep. Hugh and I wanted to do this originally. I showed him ‘The Wolverine Saga' and we're both very passionate about it, for years now, and so, yes, we're very excited to get this to the screen finally. It's a great story.”

So Ryan Reynolds is still very much locked in to play Deadpool then?

“Absolutely – I wouldn't make 'Deadpool' without Ryan, I wouldn't be involved. He's been extremely involved in the process. He was involved with the script. He worked with the writers, throwing out a lot of ideas. We have a great director in Tim Miller from 'Blur' and will give it a different kind of look than all the other movies. Its tone is insane. Oh, it's really funny. It's outrageous, irreverent, violent. I mean – It's Deadpool!”

A while ago word (rumor?) hit that we would be seeing a fourth installment of the franchise that started all of this mutant mayhem. Hopefully going some way to redeem the failings of Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand. But if that does happen, Donner says it wont be anytime soon..

“In the future – way in the future – would I like to do an 'X-Men 4'? I would, but again there's no reason to saturate the market. So I would say no – I'm happy with what I'm doing right now.”

Well, at least there are plans for it eventually. Sorta. Would you guys even like to see a continuation of Fox's original X-Men movies? And if so what story would you like it to follow?

If Singer stuck to X3 then he wouldn't have ruined two CBM franchises, his original plan of the Phoenix rising up and Wiping out San Francisco, Thats what you expect from the Phoenix total carnage.

so no chance of them doing a time travel story with cable & bishop trying to sort out the f*cked up timelines............shame.

I kind of get the vibe that Deadpool is one of, if not the only, comic book character roles Ryan Reynolds has taken on that he is legitimately passionate about. Not to say that he half-asses every other one, just that he actually has a desire to expand the character.

LOL@marvel72.

I think the Cable and Bishop story would be great on screen. Would also be nice to see some new faces.

I used to like this woman and then she she doesn't want an a fourth X-Men movie so now I'm having second thoughts on whether I can trust her again. She broke my heart once, I can't let her do it again.

Why would X4 be needed....I thought Xmen: First class was suppose to rejuvenate the Xmen franchise...

Stupid Fox...just give up and pass the reigns back to Marvel for petes sake!!!

BY THE TIME WE SEE X4 THEY WON'T CALL IT X4 THEY'LL REBOOT IT OR CONTINUE WITH ALL THE ACTORS IN 1ST CLASS, FOX HAS TRULY MESSED UP CONTINUITY..MARVEL SHOULD OWN X-MEN MOVIES NOT FOX..

Yeah yeah, "back to Marvel!", "Let it die" etc. Do I really need to remind you guys what was said when X-Men: First Class was announced? And that only turned out to be the best CBM of the Summer.

@RorMachine-well said!

Also to the people who keep saying that Spider-Man and X-Men rights should go back to Marvel: yes, we know they should! But harping on about it isn't going to change it. The studios aren't just going to relinquish the rights to some very lucrative projects just because you say they should...at least not any time soon.

I kinda want another xmen movie because i really want to see more of Kelsey Grammar as Beast. I thought he was great, a real highlight of X3 and would love to see some more of him on screen!!! (I also love grammar, i think he is really underrated as an actor)

@Kung[frick]oala - yes, then they could use time travel as an excuse to fix the timeline. Get Cyclops back at least. Do a version of days of future past perhaps.

Like I have said many times here, they will move forward from First Class and that will be the "reboot" of the franchise. We will never see an X4 based on the prior films' continuity.

x-men first class was best reveiwed cbm of the year,but wasn't the best.

I liked 'First Class' but I'm not really hopeful for the future of this franchise, cos there are soo many X-Men related films; Wolverine (which I think wont do so good, cos of the first 1), Deadpool (Reynold's is just annoying now) n X-Men 4? Come on, it's a little too late Fox

If FOX keep doing the movies, I would rather see a X-Men 4 with cyclops back and everyone against apocalypse or mister sinister. and not having all the focus on wolverine

@Hellsing

I'm not too sure about that.

All the 3rd film of a Comic Book Movies with a Trilogy tend to always suck:

- Superman III
- Batman Forever
- Spider-Man 3
- X-Men Last Stand

It's a curse! Reason why I'm not as excited for Dark Knight Rises as I normally would (set pics didn't impress me much either), but hopefully it will break the mold.
