Michael Fassbender Explains His Choice Of Accent For X-Men: First Class' Magneto!

The star of the critically acclaimed X-Men: First Class explains his choice of accent for Erik Lensher/Magneto in the movie, shedding some light on why we heard a slight twang of his natural Irish accent...

While Michael Fassbender's Erik Lensherr was seemingly of German origin in X-Men: First Class, some were left wondering about his rather unique accent, which occassionally sounded a little Irish...not a surprise as that's where the actor is actually from. Well, here's an explanation for you courtesy of IGN Movies:

"I'm kind of using my own accent and taking out as much Irish-ness as I can. People always say that I sound anything but Irish... most people say to me Canadian, or people have said Dutch, German, South African.

"But what do you do with the accent? Because he's not English and he didn't really have any sort of history in England. But I think he is well-educated... so I'm just trying to play a more neutral version of my own accent."

So there you have it! I can't say his accent bothered me in the least, but I now a few people picked up on it. What did you think? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Starring James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy, Jennifer Lawrence as Raven Darkholme, Lucas Till as Alex Summers/Havok, Caleb Landry Jones as Sean Cassidy/Banshee, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, Oliver Platt as the Man in Black, Jason Flemyng as Azazel and Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggart, X-Men: First Class is out now!

His accent was fine.
Ian McKellans was all over the place in the previous movies and no one mentions that.

Accent was fine, I'll deal with an accent if it means a GREAT MOVIE. Watched it last night, loved it. They did a phenomenol job...worth seeing again next weekend. Magneto was FINALLY done some real justice. He has the ability to become the menace that he appears to be but you see the humanity and you see some of that caring that McKellan and Stewart have the old movies. I'm treating this as more the Xavier Magneto origin movie more than First Class. Anyone that hasn't seen it needs to.

@Argo

Why are you posting the same comment on so many articles? I think we should just chill out and accept that neither Fox or Sony are going to let go of their comic book properties anytime soon and just enjoy their movies for what they are. That, or do what we do best and...

Anyway, seeing this movie Thursday and I can't wait.

I think he did a fine job with the accents.

@bohemiben: good count; I think we can safely assume he spoke German in the concentration camps (I highly doubt it was "English"). And more over, since he's of Jewish descent, he probably knows, at the very least, rudimentary Hebrew. Talk about multi-lingual.

I'd like a fraction of that please.

Michael Fassbender was amazing, his accent did change a lot through the movie, but it didn't take away from his performance or the movie in general.

@Weeton:
Actually he didn't talk german in the concentration camps, sure Erik Lensherr did, but it was while he was much much younger, hence a younger actor named Bill Millner spoke german during that scene.
But still the count leaves Fassbender at 4 languages that he spoke in the movie fluently. Pretty empressive I may say.
And let's not forget Kevin Bacon as Shaw he spoke 3 languages: german, english and russian.

I really like how this movie was kind of like an international espionage 007-inspired piece of period film :)

Yes, well we don't know where Magneto was between 1944 and 1962, so he could have lived in Ireland for all we know. Yes, his Irish accent did come back but his performance was outstanding.

As for all this about the film rights. I can't see Fox letting go, they have The Wolverine and Deadpool films planned, and an X4/X5 duology has been mentioned by Lauren Shuler Donner. So it doesn't sound like they are giving up anytime soon.

Just go and see this film. It has Singer back on board, the Kick-Ass director directing it, and a great cast. If you don't support the good stuff, then they'll hire Wreck Hackner again and we'll get supercrap films like X3. We may as well help them to continue giving us good movies, where Vaughn and Singer have creative control...

Quit crying like kids and get to the frickin cinema so at least we get quality movies, even if you'd rather Marvel had them. Even if they get back to Marvel, when would Marvel Studios be able to get an X-Men film made? They have their hands full with Avengers, Iron Man 3, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Iron Fist and all that stuff...

@ Fireblade

I for one prefer they take XMFC as the beginning of a new X-Men franchise and they throw the ideas of an X4 and X5 movies to the thrash can. The X-Men franchise continuity died with the death of Professor X, Cyclops and Jean Grey in X3 to me. There's no need to focus attention on something that is already dead. I also prefer that they make the next Wolverine movie and the Deadpool movie as part of that new cinematic universe.

@Princeofpower:

I totally agree with you. I know they didn't say it was a reboot, but I think they should make it a reboot now. There are so many HUGE discrepancies now that they really need to. Xavier recruiting Cyclops while still walking in Wolverine. Xavier and Magneto recruiting Jean together. Emma in Wolverine, Beast in X3 debating with Shaw.

That and this was a much better movie than the other three. It felt much more fresh.

In a sequel they can easily bring in Cyclops, Angel, Jean and Iceman, keeping the focus on Cyclops learning to lead and falling for Jean. And even if you wanted to make it the real original first five, its a pretty short step to send Banshee with Moira to Muir Island (or a similar place) to help her, and have Havok take off somewhere.

Magneto in the next film as a villain could be ok, but then the next one could be Krakoa and enter Storm, Wolverine, and a new team.

@ TheSchemer

Like I said before, the reason why Vaughn and Fox have not pubicly said that this is a ''pure'' reboot is because it seems to me that the 2 parts are not on the same wavelength as far as the franchise should go. I'm fairly confident that in Vaughn's mind this should be and probably IS a reboot but in the other hand, I think Fox just doesn't want to reboot the franchise because they think seeing the respectable numbers that X3 did at the BO that the franchise continuity still has something left it. I, for one, think they are wrong because you cannot go onto that franchise continuity without Professor X and the 2 main X-men (Cyclops and Jean). Maybe without 2 of them but not without the 3 most important faces of the X-Men. So I think they made kind of an agreement that they would called XMFC a prequel/reboot and should the movie be a big success and revive the franchise, Vaughn could make whatever he wants to the X-Men. I don't know if XMFC will thrive at the BO but I just know that I enjoyed it way more than any of the 4 previous movies and that It deserves at least a sequel.

So my hope lies on the perspective that should Vaughn gain full control on the franchise, he would get the rest of the original first class (Cyclops, Jean, Angel, etc...) right in one of its possible sequels unlike Singer and that the movies would be taken with a more serious approach.

For a sequel, I would like vaughn to introduce the step-brother of Charles Xavier, Juggernaut as one of the main villains and that they make him an unstoppable force like he is in the comics and Apocalypse for a third should we ever get there.

People don't think that he's Irish? I've only seen a few clips and could have told you that he's Irish. He tries not to let it show, but it's obvious. I don't mind, though. My ancestors were Irish, so I'm completely down with the Irish accent.

There are a lot of haters on this site for Superhero movies.Most of you are too young to appreciate the concept when it wasn't possible or probable for studios to make these movies.Be EXCITED that you live in a time where you can see these films at all.X-MEN FIRST CLASS is a mind bogglingly,insanely incredible OFF THE SCALES movie!If you don"t think was one of the greatest movies ever made then you are NOT and NEVER WERE a comic book fan.X-MEN RULE!!!!!

The accent was fine, it wasn't distracting because of Michael Fassbender's performance; you just accepted and believed it. I have to say that the previous X-Men movies I didn't really care for Erik/Magneto but Michael's performance(and the script), I had found myself rooting for him.
Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy were both amazing, and I got giddy when they were on the screen together. At the end of the movie you could see how even though they don't see eye-to-eye on the human-muntant coexistance issue, they respect each other and try to not hurt each other, intentionally.
Seen this movie twice now, may go see it for a third time.
