Rumor: Marvel Studios' X-Men Spin-off Plans Revealed — With Wolverine Front And Center

Marvel Studios may be expanding its Mutant Saga plans with two new team-up movies, and one could provide the perfect opportunity to introduce the MCU's Wolverine as the X-Men franchise takes centre stage.

Marvel Studios will release its X-Men reboot in 2028, setting the tone for a new Saga of storytelling that will almost certainly focus heavily on mutants. Unlike The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the X-Men franchise opens the door to countless spin-offs.

Those could revolve around individual characters like Wolverine and Cable or teams such as X-Force and X-Factor. The possibilities are endless, and at least two upcoming Mutant Saga movies may have been revealed by insider Daniel Richtman.

"I hear that an Alpha Flight movie is indeed in development," he wrote, "as well as an X-Force movie." Later, he explained, "They really want multiple mutant projects [in the] next Saga."

This is the second time this week we've heard about a potential Alpha Flight movie, and according to another social media "scooper," That REDACTED Guy, Marvel Studios' plan is for Wolverine to debut in that, not in X-Men. It seems Kevin Feige is taking a different approach to Logan that's more in line with the comics, meaning we'll get to know him before he joins Professor X's mutant team.

Back to Richtman, and he claims Marvel Studios is also keen to still "do something" with the Young Avengers/Champions after 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars.

There's a lot to mull over here, but an Alpha Flight movie led by Wolverine is an intriguing possibility. The Canadian superhero team has heaps of storytelling potential, but Logan would obviously be the big draw.

First introduced in Uncanny X-Men #120 in 1979, Alpha Flight is Canada's premier superhero team, originally assembled by the government to protect the country. Created by John Byrne, the roster has included notable heroes such as Guardian, Vindicator, Northstar, Aurora, Sasquatch, Puck, and Shaman. Wolverine's story is tied to them through the Canadian organisation, Department H.

Directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*), the untitled X-Men movie stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers, Sadie Sink (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) as Jean Grey, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, Asa Germann (Gen V) as Angel, Ben Wang (The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping), Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Storm, and Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) as Professor Charles Xavier.

Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) also stars as Emma Frost, alongside Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who plays Nathaniel Milbury, an alias of Mister Sinister in the comics. There are also rumours that Marvel Studios will introduce Apocalypse as the next Saga's big bad.

X-Men will be released exclusively in theaters May 5, 2028.

That sweet spot in between bashing a DC movie and glazing a Marvel movie where it's fake rumors ad nauseum... stop sharing nobodies and stop giving them clout.

It all hangs on getting the casting right. If they screw up Logan they kill a cash cow. Jackman owned that role for so long that it’s going to be difficult but far from impossible. But they really can’t mess around again. People will want to come out and see the new Wolverine already and the expectations will be high. Marvel has shown they are too willing to screw up a winning formula but have also course corrected at times (like with Spidey) to give audiences what they want

@Bucky74 - Part of their strategy seems to be to shift the focus onto the first five, original X-Men team. And that can work. But, they’ll need to recast others, like Wolverine, eventually. Marvel has been great overall at casting.

Doubt they are in active development. Although I do believe they want to do something with Wolverine since he did have a trilogy during the FOX days.

As a Canadian I think this is a fantastic idea! Not only because we'll get our first big screen Canadian superhero team, but Wolverine gets to stay as a main character without overshadowing the X-Men.

Please yes Marvel, X-force, Alpha Flight, and Wolverine front and center are great ideas.

@RedFury - yep good ideas imo…

I feel X-Force though may be too soon after X-Men but it depends on how they approach it i guess so we’ll see.

@TheVisionary25 - Skip the first version of X-Force obviously. That won’t work for a long time otherwise. The Cable, Domino, Shatterstar, Deadpool version is the better starting point. Or could be though the Deadpool movies may have slightly ruined it. If so then X-Force as Xavier’s wet works/spec ops squad.

@Truebeliever333 - true but i feel like X Force should be setup after a sequel or something so feels just too soon timing wise imo…

However as said , it depends on the direction they go with the mutants.

@bobevanz - You can find all type of regulations in an industry but the flow of information will never stop tbh when it’s this profitable. It’s gotten ridiculous to the point where leaks are now monetised and people will pay these people for early access to them on patreon. That’s just sad.

@bobevanz - This comes across as an advertisement from the industry if I'm being honest.

I like this idea. But Hopefully they don't kill off Hudson. Keep him as leader. Hope also they keep the team going after Wolverine abandons the team to Xmen. Hopefully we also see his first fight with the Hulk.

Cyclops should be front and center. We've glaze Wolvie for long enough.

Reboot the MCU and DCU

Wolverine being Canadian and thus the MCU iteration being introduced in an Alpha Flight film is a fun idea imo.

Also in regards to The Champions , i say do a special presentation first to test the waters for those characters then have them be in a film or show!!.

@TheVisionary25 - I get the reasoning and agree but still prefer Wolvie isn’t placed on Alpha Flight from the start.

This has been consistently rumored for a year and it's picking up steam. I think it's legit and it makes sense. You need Heather Hudson rescuing Logan after his escape from the Weapons Project to lay his story foundation properly. Plus, Alpha Flight is sick

I think they are really overestimating how popular the X-Men in film are and its going to backfire. They need to release a movie, see what people react to and then create a sequel or spin-off based on that level of interest once they know it'll make them money.

Combining two entire teams of developed X-Men into a single movie nearing the height of Superhero popularity made only $747.9m at the box office and then the immediate next film had $545m at the box office.

Prior spin-off attempts with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine performed poorly at the box office other than Logan which released at the peak of Superhero popularity and a lot of the other spin-off's are either never mentioned, box office bombs or simply were never made because of a lack of them being able to justify the expenditure to stakeholders.

I expect the new X-Men film will perform well as long as people still care enough after Avengers: Secret Wars to watch more MCU, but I don't see long running franchise with the X-Men, people get bored of them really quickly. I'm personally fine with the Fox-Verse, even with its flaws, and don't have an interest in watching anything associated with the Jean Grey that was in Spider-man: BraND.

Making a Wolverine movie with Alpha Flight in it? Fine.

Making an Alpha Flight movie with Wolverine in it? Terrible.
