THE WOLVERINE Co-Writer Reveals That Rogue Could Have Appeared In The Movie

Or at least, she could have in early versions of the script anway. In an interview Mark Bomback reveals that his love of the character and her relationship with Logan led to him trying to find a way to work her into the story somehow..

While chatting to CreativeScreenwriting.com (via SHH) about his work on the film, The Wolverine co-writer Mark Bomback reveals that another member of The X-Men aside from Jean Grey could well have shared the screen with Logan in James Mangold's movie. He explains that because he was such a fan of Rogue (played by Anna Paquin in X-Men 1-3) and her connection with Wolverine, he toyed with the idea of adding her into the script..even trying to come up with a way for Yashida to come to possess her powers.

"I love Rogue and I just think that there’s something about this idea that Rogue is tremendously empathetic but incapable of safe human contact. That always moved me and I thought that’s what really got to the heart of what makes the X-Men franchise so unique. So I was trying to do something with Rogue in the script. I even had a set of ideas that the old man possessed a version of Rogue’s power and that was going to be indicated by a white stripe in his hair. Eventually it became very goofy, and I threw it out because I started realizing throughout the script that it became more problematic than cool."

"It’s no accident to me that in the first X-Men film the first two mutants that you really see who have a connection are Wolverine and Rogue. There’s something special between them, so I was trying to bring Rogue into it, but it just didn’t get there. I regretted there wasn’t a way to figure it out, but when I look at the film now, it would have stuck out if we tried to shoehorn her in there just because it was another character from the universe."

Many fans were a little disappointed with the movie version of Rogue in the previous X-flicks -- although Anna Paquin gave good performances, the character was VERY different to her comic counterpart. Maybe with Days Of Future Past we'll finally see the sassy, tough as nails Southern belle we all know and love..and having her fly and punch the heads off Sentinels wouldn't hurt either!

Trying to find a part for her in the movie....In the Uncanny X-men title which sees the rest of the X-men travel to Japan for Logan and Mariko's wedding, Rogue is a huge part. Most of it is just her and Logan hunting for a Japanese crime lord and she jumps in front of a gun to save Mariko.

I wish these people actually read the comics.

I know she was nothing like comic Rogue aside from her skin powers, but I still liked the movie character..particularly in X1 and 2..she was wasted in 3 along with pretty much everyone else.

I would of liked if Rogue was it, but I would of LOVED if Jubilee was in it instead. Still a good movie

Doesn't really bother me that her Rogue is jarringly different from the comics. It's adaption, not a copy. Singer just has to find a way to make her more compelling in DOFP.

Well she's got a big part in the comics, so I get where he's coming from. Kitty would have made more sense though, since she's already an X-Man.

Is Rogue still a badass in the comics? I know she lost her flight and super strength.

Movie Rouge is an obvious amalgam of Jubilee and Rouge.

Hell, in X-Men TAS, you have the first episode being Jubilee having relationship issues because she's a mutant. Except it makes sense with Rouge since she can't touch anyone.

Also, I remember in TAS, Rouge getting mad and crying because she couldn't love anyone.

As much as I would have liked to see Rogue, I felt having Wolverine alone was best after you added too many mutants in one Wolverine film.

And no, it wouldn't have been amazing.

The Wolverine was great as a solo look on Logan. It didn't need any other mutant we recognized. That is one of the MANY reasons Origins sucked ass.

What sounds good on paper is not good on film. Wish you people would understand that.

What Levi said.

@thewonderer

No amalgam. Logan and Rogue had their own stuff going on when she joined the X-Men. At that time, it wasn't so much her powers that made the X-Men nervous - it was the fact that she had nearly killed Ms Marvel and was with the Brotherhood. She wasn't exactly trustworthy.

So they went with that notion of her being a runaway and made her pretty much the center of Magneto's plan. She's scared of touching anyone, scared of her powers, doesn't feel like she belongs anywhere - and then Magneto decides he's going to use her powers to turn the world's leaders into mutants.

Anyways, this is what happens when Rogue takes a shot meant for Mariko...

listen if they are going to do a time travel movie and most of it is in the past then what the hell are the other original xmen doing there, how much actual screen time do they even have?
if rogue isnt seen flying in the future sequences ill be super pissed. doesnt have to have an explanation as we were told its some several years after the events of x3.
however she gains the power of flight and super strength can be saved for some other movie explaining what happened while following around wolverine.

when wolverines brain goes back to the future at the end cyclops is standing there like dude wtf get it together and we see they are in a new future with apocalypse

Tainted, I meant Jubilee from X-Men TAS
Tainted87
Tainted87 - 8/13/2013, 8:18 PM
I get that, but again, TAS came after Rogue/Wolverine, and the sidekick duo that actually had staying power was Kitty/Wolverine.... years and years before TAS started. And that's where all the writers who worked on the movie for years and years got their ideas.

@TheWolverine08

based on your logic, I could take Batman without powers from the comic, give him powers for the movie and claim that it's adaptation, not a copy?

I think we agree that it would no longer be the same character.

@Exodus *Facepalm* I never said that they should change powers. I don't think directors should be slaves to the source material, but they shouldn't change powers. Don't read so much into things.

@Nomis From what I've seen, I think the full ninja fight was too violent for a PG-13 movie so a large bulk of it was cut. We'll probably see a bloodier fight in the uncut version that's going to be released.

@Nomis Fair enough, I didn't even bother me, but it really looks like your passionate about your stance. I admire that.
TheWolverine08
TheWolverine08 - 8/13/2013, 9:25 PM
@Nomis I see what you mean about the X-Men being the movie X-Men being different than their comic couterparts (I'll be the first to admit that my favorite character Wolverine is a little more emotional and cant fight in the movies), but it honestly doesn't bother me that much.

I really look at CBMs as adaptions. The directors have to craft their own unique stories and takes on characters, and they don't have to look like they came straight exactly out of a the comic book they are based on. I think Christopher Nolan proved with his Dark Knight trilogy that you can largely deviate from source material and still make great CBMs

That doesn't mean that I endorse stupid changes though. What Fox did to Deadpool was in Origins was stupid. Overall, I am fine with some slight changes( I liked that Wolverine was a little more emotional, gave him more depth), but gratuitous changes shouldn't be tolerated.

Rogue had no meaningful purpose in X2 or X3. No sense in using her for future films
