THE WOLVERINE May Not Tie As Neatly Into Fox's Shared Universe As We Thought

It's been assumed that James Mangold's solo Wolverine movie would be the stepping stone to Fox's shared movie-verse of Marvel characters, and while it still exists in the same universe, Mangold suggests that it may not tie directly into the next X-flick, Days Of Future Past..

Wolverine fans are in for a treat over the next year or so, as Hugh Jackman's mutton-chopped mutant berserker is set to grace our screens in not only a new solo movie, but Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days Of Future Past. So both films will tie together right? Well, yes...and no! 20th Century Fox's plans for a shared movie universe for its stable of Marvel characters is well known now, but even though The Wolverine and DOFP will obviously be set in the same reality, director James Mangold tells SFX that his movie will bring Logan's story to "a close".

“Bryan and I have talked and he’s seen what we’ve done. Clearly the reality is that we are all trying to work together and make things groove together. But the trick is we were making our movie before Bryan came on and before I knew what they were up to in that film. Our agenda was always our agenda and our movie stands alone, so the journey we take Logan on in The Wolverine, we bring to a close.”

I wouldn't take this as sign that there will be no continuity at all, maybe just that we won't have something like a Marvel-esque after credit sequence directly setting up the next movie. Anyway, we'll find out soon enough when The Wolverine hits theaters July 26th, and you can read more from Mangold when the new issue of SFX comes out on June 26th.
