Box Office: WOLVERINE Matches IRON MAN's $35m 1st Day Haul

It looks like the Internet pirates were held at bay, at least for X-Men Origins: Wolverine's opening weekend anyway...

Newsarama reports that Fox and Marvel's PG-13 Hugh Jackman-starrer reportedly grossed an estimated $35 million at the North American box office on Friday (according to boxoffice.com), putting the film on pace to accumulate a predicted $84 to $89 over the full weekend.

The figure includes approximately $5m the film earned during midnight showings Thursday night.

The $35 million almost exactly matches Iron Man's $35.2m Friday haul exactly one year ago. That Marvel superhero film went on to gross $102.1m its first weekend, but most prognosticators aren't predicating Wolverine will go that high, despite the similar Friday results. Less-than-positive word of mouth is being cited as the reason Wolverine may not match Iron Man's performance.

The Friday figures are also similar to the $31.2m opening day of 2003's X2: X-Men United (also on the first weekend of May). That critically well-received film totaled $85.6M during its opening frame on its way to a $214.9M final gross.

to traditional movie-goers, i think TDK with claim "comic movie of the decade" but to fans it will be watchmen.

Good for it. Wasn't a great film, but deserves to do good so we can get some more WOlvie and a Dead pool.I really liked Watchmen top 3 comic films for sure, but I'd still put The Dark Knight as number one. Watchmen had a few corny moments.I usually don't find my self saying this, but that were a few minor details I wish they would of taken some creative liberties with.

Transformers was one of the crappiest films to come out in the last 5 years. Transformers 2 won't be any different. It will make good money, but make no mistake it sucks. Terminator will be the top grosser this year in my opinion.

@GUNSMITH - Yeah, Transformers will dominate all. I actually have a very strong feeling that Transformers will break the box office record this year.

Well, not everyone got to watch the leak version and there are lotsa kids and movie goers who dont read comic books that wont care if they f'd it up. All i can say is it would have blown the lid if it was done right and proper... Transformer 2, beat the shit out of the competition next month!

I'm sorry, but I couldn't agree at all that Transformers was better than Wolverine. I didn't even really like Wolverine all that much, but transformers was a classic idiot film. It was made for people who like brainless crap with no depth or even a hint of emotion. The plot was laughable and the acting was mediocre at best. Easily the worst major block buster in the last 3 years while TDK was one of the best films in general of the last 3 years.

CaptainAmerica - 5/2/2009, 11:54 PM
lol Watchmen was gayyyyyyyy! Too much [frick]ing music in the most random scenes, too long, and bad acting. Iron Man or TDK FTW

stupify_me - 5/3/2009, 12:56 AM
Are you serious CaptainAmerica? You thought there was bad acting in watchmen? Also anyone calling a movie to long generally doesn't have appreciation for the art and will prefer watching things pointlessly blow up for an hour and half with out any plot. I suggest you skip movies all together and just watch the next fox special programming of When Buildings explode.

The use of music in Watchmen was perfect..if some people felt it was jarring then it did its job!

Good for Wolvie, by no means a classic but very entertaining, and any comic book movie making money is never a bad thing.
stupify_me
stupify_me - 5/3/2009, 6:14 AM
I agree Rorschach. While I don't actually like the vast majority of the songs they put in Watchmen they all fit perfectly with in the tone and worked perfectly for the film. Even not so great music can always find it's place on film. I've seen a lot of TV shows doing things like that recently taking music that was generally received as bad and some how make it incredibly powerful.

While i agree with Stupify RE DArk Knight as one of the best films in the last 3 years, im totally surprised that you said Wolverine was better than Transformers.

Transformers are for fans of brainless crap with no depth you say? mediocre acting and laughable plot? really now? i think they did the best Transformers live movie adaptation possible and balanced out Special effects, light moments and explosive scenes perfectly. There were corny bits but hey, at least Transformers was aimed at a more general audience eversince the 80's.

As for Wolverine, for a really dark character, the movie was made for kids! Where's the depth there as well? The love of his life dies and he doesnt even check for stab wounds and doesnt bury her? F' that... for a guy who can smell sabertooth miles away, he couldnt distinguish Silverfox blood from a dead animal? Never knew gambit could fly and had superstrength neither when he broke that falling wall. 6 sharp claws reflect beams of force? that's gotta be claws that are flat as a plate.

And as for the plot, its gotta be the most stupid plot ive seen ever in 5 years! It started out very good despite how some people found it corny to see em in each major war but it spiraled downwards after Silverfox died. It felt like half the movie was written by a different writer and the 2nd half a different one. I juz feel sorry for Liev and Jackman who gave a very awesome acting performance

JAMESH @ I couldn't put that better myself about WOLVERINE!!! An i was never much of a TRANSFORMERS fan, (was the other side GI JOE) but TRANSFORMERS was amazing, and they made a really good an timeless classic! I loved it, ive even just bought it on Blue ray even though i already had it on DVD!!! How on earth can anyone say WOLVERINE is better than that?!? P.s im a huge WOLVERINE fan by the way. I just hope the sequel is fantastic like this should've been, same goes for DEADPOOL! ; )

I'm sorry but just look at Transformers. The movie was nothing, but one liners and things go Boom. The plot was laughable and they didn't even try to put any emotion behind it. The movie was made to show off cool CGI and explosions. While Wolverine wasn't great and was merely ok they at least tried to make the movie about something they injected it with some emotion at least.
