Fox Statement on Wolverine Movie Leak

Fox Statement on Wolverine Movie Leak

We've received the official statement from 20th Century Fox regarding the online leak of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and they're going after the leakers.

By ComicBookMovie - Apr 01, 2009 04:04 PM EST

Last night, a stolen, incomplete and early version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine was posted illegally on websites. It was without many effects and had missing scenes and temporary sound and music. We immediately contacted the appropriate legal authorities and had it removed. We forensically mark our content so we can identify sources that make it available or download it. The source of the initial leak and any subsequent postings will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law -- the courts have handed down significant criminal sentences for such acts. The FBI and MPAA are also actively investigating the crime. We are encouraged by the support of fansites condemning piracy and this illegal posting and pointing out that such theft undermines the enormous efforts of the filmmakers and actors and, above all, hurts fans of the film.

Here's the review that was posted earlier, but pulled down:

MAJOR SPOILERS

The film is exactly as we have been told, and its bad folks. It opens in Canada with the murdering of Logan (called James) father, he then kills the man who murdered his father(bone claws and all), but the murder's last breath tells James that He was his real father. Young James and Victor run away, then it cuts into an opening credit where their seen fighting in various wars(its very Watchmen-ish the way the credits are).

The first 20 minutes or so are actually(surprise) pretty good. After being recruited by Striker, James(Jimmie) and Victor are put in a team with Wraith, a skinny version of Blob, Wade Wilson, Beak, and Agent Zero. They are in an African country hunting down a man who found a piece of meter roc that will be latter melted down to make the adamantium. The clear standout in these scenes is Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, and hes cracking jokes and well basically pulling off WW very well (theres even a funny/awkward elevator scene where WW breaks the tension). As the team is killing these villagers to motivate someone to help them find the meteor, Logan quits.

Now this is where the film takes a turn for the worse. There about 30 minutes of Logan just living a normal life with Silverfox. ITS VERY BORING. Striker turns up again to offer Logan a spot in Weapon X, but he decline, while this is happening we learn that Victor is hunting down his old team. Striker warns Logan about Victor, but Logan claims he can take care of himself. In short, victor 'kill's silverfox and to get his revenge on Victor, he joins Weapon X. In short he joins, they put the metal in him, and he escapes and finds refuge i an old couples house. The old couple are killed by Agent Zero, and this starts the helicopter/hummer vs. wolverine fight from the trailers. Now this fight was just really boring, predictable, and goofy in a bad way. Wolverine kill everyone and everything (bye-bye Agent Zero) and learns that striker is behind all this.

The next part of the film i basically skipped through, IT WAS THAT BORING. Wolvie find wraith and blob who tell him to find Gambit, so that way Gambit can show wolvie where Strikers secret base is at. Meanwhile Victor is basically rounding up mutants for striker to use for Weapon XI(killing wraith). theres more cheesy and goofy fighting within these scenes(even wolvie cutting down a fire escape from the side of a building and while its landing on him literally cutting it into a million pieces with a giant combo move).

Gambit then takes wolvie in his crappy plane to 3 mile island where he confronts Striker, who then tells Logan that sliverfox wasn't killed. He gets pissed and leaves the lab to find victor about to finally kill silver fox, then fight and he saves her, then they find all the captured mutants and free them. As their leaving, Deadpool/Weapon XI comes in Darth Maul style, and while wolvie stays to fight, the other run out the back. Silverfox is shot by a soldier on the run out and dies from her injuries.

Now heres where Fox really screwed Deadpool over..... he is controlled by a computer, which is operated by Striker. So Deadpool sees in a kinda terminator vision where he gets direct commands from striker. Striker gives the order for DP to kill wolvie and a big fight begins. DP is basically kicking wolvies ass, so wolvie gets the brilliant idea to climb up one of the reactors so the can fight on top. DP teleports up there (wraiths dna) and a long fight begins, wolvie and DP are knocked off and victor appears out of nowhere to grab wolvie, and help him fight DP. then DP starts to activate his cyclops eyes, blasting the crap out of the reactor. Hear was a really weird part, he shoots his beams at wolvie who blocks them with his blades, and while hes blocking it it heats up the blades red hot. so then victor distracts DP long enough for wolvie to get behind him and to cut his head off with the hot blades. As his head falls the beams are still going off and this makes tears holes in the reactor causing it to crumble.

Striker then goes out to find wolvie, shoots him with the 'magic bullet' , professor X does show up briefly to help the captured mutants, but Gambit helps wolvie get out of the place.

End movie.

NOW to the scene after the credits.....Deadpool fans hold your hearts, cause this will hurt.

the scene is just logan sitting in a japanese bar, he keeps asking for drinks and the bartender ask him if hes: 'drinking to forget'. He then replies, 'no, im just drinking to remember'. It should also be noted that it looked like Logan had a top not and long hair in this scene, which appears to set-up a sequel which him going through the Japanese training's.

So in all i was way more disappointed than i thought i could be. Its an overall very crappy story, and it doesn't flow well at all. I really hoped Fox would take care of Deadpool better, and there are rumors that the after credit scene will be switched out, but from this film it doesn't look like we'll be seeing a Deadpool movie soon, and i think Ryan Reynolds knew this and even hinted at it in recent interviews.

Ok the Positives. Standouts were the acting of Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Weapon XI, and Taylor Kitsch as Gambit (i would actually be disappointed if he wasn't Gambit in any sequels). Hugh was great as Wolvie, but we've seen this act 3 times before. Liev was good, and the rest of the cast performed well also, it was just the story that dragged this movie down for me.

Who should see this? if you liked the other X-Men, try this, see it and judge for yourself. If your a Deadpool Fan, see it for Ryan Reynolds performance, but you might not want to stick around unless you really want to see Fox turn the Great Deadpool, into a Bakarra Terminator.

I don't appreciate spoilers, and I even get seriously annoyed at the "fans" who complain if every new trailer doesn't contain two complete minutes of NEVER-SEEN-BEFORE-ACTION! I don't want to see all the action scenes before the movie comes out! Leave them out of the trailers and the commercials so I can be surprised in the THEATER! I don't care about all you babies whining about how you can't stand to wait and besides you think it will suck.

All you whiny bitches who downloaded it suck, but all of you who talk about all the spoiler scenes suck even more. I'm just glad that you didn't get those 14 minutes.

Seen it , liked it, same complaints as before, but honestly ..... i am easy, so you know i will be there opening day. hated blobs hair. wish it were light brown like in the books. I would prefer to see a matured gambit with a well practiced accent cuz i think Gambit would use the whole Southern French Charm as a wink to his own veracity .

I just got done watching this early version. Let me stress EARLY. Skins for computer models weren't even finished.

Powergirl... your an idiot. I agree with Rorscach01, any fool who fast forwards through a scene for lack of action cannot be taken seriously in their opinion of the film.

To all of you who haven't seen this online... DON'T. The leaked version is so completely unfinished and unrefined it is nearly unwatchable. While it gives you the gist of the story, it is not going to be the experience you want from this movie. Almost none of the CG is finished in it, the additional footage they filmed in February isn't in it, and some scenes even have numbers and notes at the bottom for editing purposes. If you want a review that may give you hope, read the article I posted.

How can anybody who watches an unfinished rough cut of a movie with scenes and FX missing say it's sh*t because it's tacky and doesn't flow?

OF COURSE IT WON'T FLOW! IT'S NOT FINISHED! IT DOESN'T HELP THAT YOU SKIP THROUGH THE DIALOGUE TO GET TO THE UNFINISHED ACTION SCENES EITHER!

Jesus Christ people! There is no way in hell you can judge this movie until you see it complete at the cinema or on DVD.

roarschach01- I second!!!

Myth- I highly doubt that Powergirl is actually "DennisW22". Powergirl just re-posted someone else's review so she is hardly the "idiot" to blame. I know, it might sound weird coming from me but how the hell can i stay mad at those tits :))

Can't wait to read your review Myth :))

Shibazz- I for one would like to pass a motion to have Shibazz commit herself to ALWAYS comment on the threads everytime she's drunk :)) I don't know about you guys but I quite enjoy her "drunken lesbian" rants! You go girl!!!!

@killian, no, prof was patrick in the movie, that you could see very well. and i really hope all of you are right, but i don't think you are going to be as right as i hope. the second half i watched last night and i thought that was pretty good, even though all the cgi was out, but i knew that, and i know that will look great finished. my problem was the rushing of the beginning. the origins book and the weapon x book are masterpieces and they didn't give it enough time and i don't think that they really got into the characters. we all know wolverine's powers but i would have loved to see them get into the animalistic part of him. after watching everything i re-read those books last night and it made me feel better. i was disappointed, but i am giving the movie another chance and there is nothing in this world that will stop me from seeing it on opening night. i didn't think it was bad, just disappointing. but then again i have been playing a million different wolverine movies in my head since i was 8 years old. and besides from agent zero sucking, all the other supporting cast was great. i just felt rushed, and that was my only problem

comicb00kguy - 4/2/2009, 7:28 AM
Once again, my old school attitude will show here, but I don't care. What is it with people these days that they have to know every tiny detail of a movie before they actually see it? To me, that ruins the entire moviegoing experience. I like to be surprised by a movie- the plot twist I didn't see coming or the surprise cameo that's just incredibly cool or the great one-liner that fits the scene perfectly. I hate being in a theater knowing the big plot twist that's going to happen any time, knowing the surprise cameo that should be coming up soon, knowing the jokes before they're told. It distracts from just sitting back and enjoying the story. It's like knowing who the killer is before watching a murder mystery.

That may be one of the few bad things about the Internet. If you want to, you can find every little detail of most movies months before even test audiences actually see it. This said, I don't mind speculating about casting, or villains in upcoming movies, or pictures that tease little things about a movie. I can know what a character looks like in his costume without it ruining the movie. Little things like that are part of the fun of anticipating an upcoming movie you're really interested in. I just don't like knowing the big things- details of the plot, the surprise cameos, stuff like that.

When I was younger, all that you knew about upcoming movies was what you could find in magazines or TV interviews with cast or director. In a way, that was better. All you knew was what the moviemakers wanted you to know. The moviegoing experience was more special.

Stepping off my soapbox, this is Kent Brockman reporting.

Maybe fox released it on purpose so they can read the boards and get some real fan feed back. That way they can make some last minute edits to try and make the best possible film they can. And if anyone believes that then you seriously need to rethink the importance of these message boards and threads because they(fox) couldn't care less.

*I posted this on the "Ryan Reynolds Reveals NEW Deadpool Facts!" thread, and thought I would share it again:

Question:
If Fox had any intention of doing a possible spin-off Deadpool movie, why would they make such drastic changes to the character?

Answer:
I think that the recent leak of the film online was a ploy by the studio! (follow me for a moment...)

1. You release a nearly perfect DVD grade copy of the film online, knowing perfectly well that the (great) majority of the people who would know to look for, and want to see this picture before it was released in theaters would be the BIGGEST fans of the franchise (the most voiced oposition)...

2. You release the INCOMPLETE version of the movie (before the final "inconspicuous" reshoots of the film involving Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman), and then when the masses go out to see the film in theaters, they get a little "surprise" at the end of the film that serves to appease the true fans, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, it makes the people who've seen the film online, or that were upset about the portrayal of Deadpool that they've read about online, GO TO THE THEATERS TO WATCH IT AGAIN!

*I know it borders on conspiracy theory, but damn if it doesn't sound plausible, and profitable for the studio!
(What do you guys think?)
WeaponX77
WeaponX77 - 4/2/2009, 11:22 AM
I'll be dead honest, I watched this leaked copy. After deleting it I will 100% say I will be spending a lot of money in theaters watching it. Repeatedly. Yeah.. so the leaked copy looked like you were watching "The making of X-Men Origins: Wolverine" special but I still think it was damn worth it and wouldn't be surprised that FOX did it on purpose to generate fan response.

I agree with Weaponx77. I think those who watched the "leaked" version were April fools guinea pigs (me included) and Fox will sit back and read what us fans write and hopefully take some civil libirties with a certain merc with a mouth and give him more screen time through reshoots.
