X-Men First Class Sequel Might Head to the 70's

Lauren Shuler Donner is quite the quotable woman today in the CBM community. Here are a few more X-Men tidbits that she gave in an interview with Crave Online.

For future films in the franchise, will you keep doing the historical thing or will you go back to the more modern era anytime soon?

Lauren Shuler Donner - Well, if we were going to sequelize this and keep on going, we would stay in the next [time] period. Probably we’d go to the 70’s.

‘X-Men: First Class.’ The best ‘X-Men’ movie so far. I think so, other people think so. A lot of people didn’t think the last two were good. Was there a concerted effort to do something differently with ‘X-Men: First Class,’ besides obviously the period change?

Lauren Shuler Donner - Yeah. Every time we make a movie we try to make it a little bit different, so that you’re not seeing the same thing over and over again. But yes, you know, we were aware that… I wasn’t too pleased with those movies. We just wanted to make something that was a fan-pleaser. There are many elements that go into making a movie, and not all of them came together. But in this one, yes, we made a concerted effort to reinvent it.

Was it easy getting Matthew Vaughn back? He was on ‘X-Men 3’ for a little while, but it didn’t happen. Did he have to be convinced?

Lauren Shuler Donner - Well, this time we had a really good script! And it was sort of the right place at the right time, you know, and as I said, Bryan [Singer] said, “Hey, look at the script. I can’t do it. Read it.” And Matthew said he read the script, hoping he’d hate it. [Laughs.] And he called up Bryan and said, “I like it!” And that was it! Everybody made up and said, hey, let’s do it. And by the way, Matthew also directed Kick-Ass, which was so good…

Headed to the 70's! Alright! So we'll have Rogue in bellbottoms. Sweet! What is it that you say? You can't have her in the sequel cause it would screw up the continuity? Oh, please! If the producers don't care about continuity then I guess I'm not supposed to either, lol.

I'll tell you what, I hope their next mission is to fight Hyper-inflation and gasoline prices. Those two were a nightmare back in the day. I'd love to see a groovy Juggernaut rocking some flower print shirts.

Which political event of the 70's should be included in the sequel?

I had this similar Idea in mind. Have it involve the Oil Shortage Crisis because they are prototyping the first line of Sentinels and they need a mess load of oil. Then maybe a dark 80s tale involving the Regan administration and perhaps Asteroid M

First Class is a unique film in that they cold continue on with the regular chronology of the past films. OR they could still go on with a reboot. Honestly, I vote they go reboot.

I think 1st class was pretty good, minus all the character errors that they input in there!

First Class was a great movie, i honestly with the other ones never happened and they started with First Class. I think it was a mistake to acknowledge the more modern x-men movies in the this one. It locked them to a timeline that they have to at least resemble. What makes no sense if the deliberately tied it to the Singer movies in some ways, but in others completely departed from it. Either do one or the other, personally I think they should have made it a reboot and start from scratch.

First class started the way they needed to do x-men. From the beginning. X-men, while it was a good movie focused on Wolverine entirely too much. Sure he is a cool character, but he is not the be all end all. regardless of what they do, I am looking forward to what they come up with for the next installment.

First Class was a good movie but thats all it was and it was because of Fassbender and McAvoy, some of the supporting cast. The movie was rushed as hell especially the ending the only reason you buy the fact that Xavier and Magneto can become "brothers" in a month or two is because of the acting. No one becomes that tight in a month no ONE. If your gonna be brave why not play it out, First Class should have built up there relationship and show some cracks develop at the end, then they take that further in a sequel.

But I guess Vaughn did the best he could with the shitty schedule he was handed. I guess we'll have to wait and see what they do, but what ever they do hopefully they give Vaughn or who ever else going to direct the sequel TIME

Why does Schuler Donner act as if the two bad X-Men movies have nothing to do with her? If she's the producer, it's her job to make sure they don't happen in the first place.

At this point I think that they have exhausted the interest of the average movie fan for this franchise. I don’t think it will matter how many times they reboot it or what decade they put it in every X men movie that they continue to make from here on out will continue to do less and less at the box office. The trend has already started:
Last Stand $234 Million
Wolivernie $179 Mil
First Class $145mil.
I know that I’ll catch this new…but I’ll wait until it’s on FX.

With the same team, the sequel can be the best of the franchise.

So Im ALL for it.

I'd introduce Scott, Jean and Storm on the third part, but I'd enjoy the sequel either way.

I'm all go for the sequel, but I wished it was involving Magneto dealing with the assassination of JFK.

I think they should stop beating around the bush and just give us X4, the movie series that has *all* the good characters (Wolvie, Storm, Prof, Nightcrawler, Kitty etc etc), not just a few.

Recast roles to keep the costs down, and just go for it. Enough with the spin-offs!

More Fassbender/Magneto would be good though, he owns that role. Would love to see his (rejuvenated) Magneto opposite Jackman's Wolverine (!)
