The Wrap are reporting on X-men: First Class' expected weekend Box Office takings. And it's looking very healthy indeed..
Fox executives expect the movie, opening at 3,641 locations Friday, many of them showing the film at midnight, to open somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million.
With Fox rebooting the franchise with relatively unknown actors -- well, at least, relatively unknown compared to previous franchise heavyweight Hugh Jackman -- Fox executive VP of distribution, Chris Aronson compared "First Class" to Paramount's J.J. Abrams-produced reboot of "Star Trek" two years ago.
They completely re-invented that franchise, and they were very successful," Aronson noted.
The site goes on to note that the movie has every chance of over performing and beating pre release projections because there are no other movies opening widely this weekend. Although the rather unfunny
Hangover 2 is expected to have another strong weekend, predictiosn favor
First Class knocking it from the top spot. Aronson's
Star Trek comparison is note worthy, because much of the debate amongst fans has been whether First Class is a reboot in that vein, or merely a loose prequel. Well, I guess you will have to make your own mind up about that when you see it. For me, although it somewhat fits in with..or rather CAN fit in with the continuity of Bryan Singer's first two films I believe that there is also enough changes to warrant referring to it as a reboot, albeit not of the type many wanted to see!
Anyway, Fox are confident that the movie's almost unanimous positive reviews and the public's love of the previous movies in the franchise will garner them between 45 and 55 Million on opening weekend. Some predictions even pushing past the 60 Mil mark. We shall see. For The Wrap's full analysis click the link below.
