X-Men: First Class Set For $50M+ At Weekend Box Office

X-Men: First Class Set For $50M+ At Weekend Box Office

The little movie that could? Not exactly, more like the big movie nobody thought would. Regardless, looks like Matthew Vaughn's mutant pre-boot is set for a very respectable weekend opening take..

The Wrap are reporting on X-men: First Class' expected weekend Box Office takings. And it's looking very healthy indeed..

Fox executives expect the movie, opening at 3,641 locations Friday, many of them showing the film at midnight, to open somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million.

With Fox rebooting the franchise with relatively unknown actors -- well, at least, relatively unknown compared to previous franchise heavyweight Hugh Jackman -- Fox executive VP of distribution, Chris Aronson compared "First Class" to Paramount's J.J. Abrams-produced reboot of "Star Trek" two years ago.

They completely re-invented that franchise, and they were very successful," Aronson noted.

The site goes on to note that the movie has every chance of over performing and beating pre release projections because there are no other movies opening widely this weekend. Although the rather unfunny Hangover 2 is expected to have another strong weekend, predictiosn favor First Class knocking it from the top spot. Aronson's Star Trek comparison is note worthy, because much of the debate amongst fans has been whether First Class is a reboot in that vein, or merely a loose prequel. Well, I guess you will have to make your own mind up about that when you see it. For me, although it somewhat fits in with..or rather CAN fit in with the continuity of Bryan Singer's first two films I believe that there is also enough changes to warrant referring to it as a reboot, albeit not of the type many wanted to see!

Anyway, Fox are confident that the movie's almost unanimous positive reviews and the public's love of the previous movies in the franchise will garner them between 45 and 55 Million on opening weekend. Some predictions even pushing past the 60 Mil mark. We shall see. For The Wrap's full analysis click the link below.

I'm seeing it at midnight tonight. And I got five of my friend to come with me, just to spite all the seemingly autistic people on this site who don't want this to be successful.

Fox is definitely low-balling the estimate so as to avoid the dreaded "disappointment" label if it doesn't do the $60-75m most expect it to. If it somehow comes in below $50m, though, people will start looking for some aspect of the project to blame, be it the period setting, the cast, or overall franchise fatigue.

I certainly think it'll make more than 50mill at the box office, but I think Fox is smart to under predict its success. It's coming off of two lackluster sequels that left a bad taste is everyone's mouth.

Certainly, the great reviews and good worth of mouth will help it no doubt. It think it'll have some great legs for the weeks after and bring in some bank, enough so to make a sequel inevitable.

I think it'll be fine.

@supert

Word of mouth? Dude the majority of ppl that I know didn't even know there was another X-men flick, and weren't even interested in watching it. Moreover, they waited too long to start promoting the film. It might under perform for this reason but who knows.

All I know is when I went to the midnight show this Tues gone I was expecting it to be me, my pal and about maybe e10 other people.. the entire cinema was jam packed. And that's one cinema in the arse end of Dublin. If they flock to it in those droves stateside it will most certainly clear 50.

I think the question you also should ask is; why didn't people gave Green Hornet a chance, when it is just like Vaugn's Kick Ass movie?

The answer is that it is the people's taste in what kind of movie it is. Green Hornet was a pretty good movie to watch, but alot of fans of the series didn't enjoy the comedic undertones in it. That pretty much goes the same with X-Men fans who are not too keen with the movie not being a prequel that connects continuity with previous films nor a reboot that they can all enjoy due to the few connections it has with previous films.

That is pretty much why fanboys like me don't intend to go see tommarrow; no matter what the review says.

I won't be helping with this goal, these are not the X-Men, and this is nothing like the Star Trek re-boot.

I hope it Fails.

Hoping a well made comic book film fails is the dumbest thing ever because it only takes away from future comic book films, no matter from what studio, from being potentially made or scoring big at the box office.

If we do not watch it, it will return to Marvel Studios
But I can see here.. even haters are going to theaters and help to make this movie so successful that Fox will keep owning the franchise and messing w/ the X-Men.. I can see (just like in Wolverine), after 1 month people here are going to say this movie was shit

Boxofficemojo are predicting $69 million with a top out of about $90 million if it over preforms. I think the long term haul of this movie will be determined on it's 2nd weekend though as movies with strong reviews tend to hold over quite well. That said, anything under $60 million in it's first weekend should probably be considered somewhat of a disappointment, even though the $120 million budget should be easily recoverable if it fails to reach that mark. All in all, it should top $200 million domestically when it finishes it's run in theatres.

It could make $150 million. That doesn't mean it was a great movie. Look at transformers 2, that movie made a grip and almost everyone on this site bashed it.
