On Wolverine 2

"That's the furthest along of all the X-Men projects on the boil. It's actually the story we wanted to use for the first Wolverine film, but [Fox head honcho] Tom Rothman preferred to set the character up with an origin story first. This movie will really focus on the relationship between Wolverine and Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord, and what happens to him in Japan. We're very fortunate to have a story mostly outlined for us [from the comic book arc co-written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller]. And we wanted an A+ writer, so we want to Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects). He came in and has tightened the story and got really immersed in the whole thing - he's in Japan in his head!

We want to make it authentic so I think it's very likely we'll be shooting in Japan. Also, by the way, we are looking to have the Japanese Fox executives involved in helping and counselling us, because it's a different culture and we don't want to portray the way they speak, dress and act in an inaccurate way. I think it's likely the characters will speak English rather than Japanese with subtitles.

What's cool about this part of the saga is that Wolverine will be fighting in a different style to what we've seen before. Mariko's father has this stick-like weapon, so Wolverine will have to fight against that. There'll be samurai, ninja, katana blades, different forms of martial arts - mano-a-mano, extreme fighting. We're going to come up with a new style of fighting. It's going to be awesome."

On X-Men: First Class

"Harry Potter is a bit of a role model for us, absolutely. But we want it to be like the recent, darker Potters. It should not be a kiddie movie - we're in the X-Men world so you can't suddenly change the tone. The First Class comics are really fun - they're funnier than any other comics I've read. Basically in each one the kids are fighting strange villains, sometimes it's aliens, sometimes it's monsters. I want to get a flavour of that world. Occasionally the kids will be in class, but more often they'll be off on adventures. Which Professor X isn't too happy about! There's nothing more interesting than a bad kid, and this is full of naughty children. Cyclops, for example - he's a tough kid that bobbed from foster home to foster home, until he ends up at the school and becomes the leader. There's also still an element of friction between the mutants and the outside world. Remember that this will be set way back before anyone knew mutants existed.

Right now the script is not done -we're not where we want to be yet. We have to be careful that we don't tread on familiar territory, that people don't say, "Oh, I've seen that, been there." But (screenwriter) Josh Schwartz has a great young pulse and he's doing an amazing job bringing the characters to life. We want to make this a franchise, following these kids at the school, so the casting of the child actors will be all-important."

On Deadpool

"I want to ignore the version of Deadpool that we saw in Wolverine and just start over again. Reboot it. Because this guy talks, obviously, and to muzzle him would be insane.

I don't see it as a problem that Ryan [Reynolds] is also playing Green Lantern. I mean, look at Harrison Ford - he was in Stars Wars and Indiana Jones at the same time and everyone was fine with that. Green Lantern could not be more different to Wade Wilson. Green Lantern is a guy who finds a ring and is thrust into this world, much like Spider-Man. Wade Wilson is a guy who unfortunately gets cancer, and volunteers for a test that will give him healing powers. He is a bad ass, a wise-cracking mercenary, who will go out and kill anyone for money. But the thing about him is that, underneath it all, and he wouldn't want you to know this, sometimes he's not such a bad ass after all. Sometimes he does the right thing.

It's going to be a dark, snarky, very funny movie. It's the hardest story to tell, I think. There's no clear cut villain - though you do have great baddies from the comic-books like Black Tom, Slayback, Blind Al and the Weasel. Blind Al is this blind woman in his house, who he abuses and mocks… it's terrible. But you find out that she was a convict who did something terrible and he saved her from execution. So he lets her live in his house and she looks after him, but they both torture each other. Anyway, there are good stories and we're figuring out which ones to incorporate.

We're right in the thick of talking to writers right now, and hopefully by November we'll have decided who's going to do it. We need someone really imaginative because we want to do some really innovative, ambitious stuff. Ryan's mentioned this in an interview already but there are parts where he's going to break the fourth wall and talk directly to the audience in the cinema. We have to work out how to do that. I don't know that Fox will agree with all our decisions, but we'll see!"

On Magneto

"David Goyer has written a brilliant script. It starts in the concentration camps and has Magneto coming out of there. But you know, I'm not sure that film is going to be made. The studio has a wealth of potential stories, and they have to stand back and decide which ones to make. And Magneto, I think, is at the back of the queue. Maybe it'll get made in five years - who knows? I can tell you that Ian McKellen won't be playing the character the whole way through. We used Lola technology in X-Men 3 to de-age Ian and Patrick for one scene, but it's very expensive. To do that for a two-hour movie would be prohibitive financially. And to find a younger actor to fill Ian's shoes, that's pretty daunting. It's not easy."

Wolverine 2: Its good to see that the Wolverine sequel will be in Japan but lets just hope that they dont fill it with any more irrelevant cameos that screw up the chance of the characters appearing in any future X-Men movies!

First Class: Im not sure if I like the fact that she says the Harry Potter movies are an influence for X-Men: First Class! In fact, the whole concept that she has there for the movie seems completely wrong! Sneakinging out of class for adventures!?! Dear God...

Deadpool: Wow, what a cop-out rebooting Deadpool because they screwed up so badly in Origins is! I was hoping that we would eventually get some sort of explanation as to what happenned to Deadpool - maybe its best just to think of that thing in origins as a clone or something!!!

As for Magneto...I hope it never gets made!!! His origin isnt interesting enough to take up a whole movie and could be done in 20mins easy!!!

I still say if they do the X-men first Class forget about the Magneto Movie vise versa. It's just too much. The wolvie movie seems cool, but i'm tired of him already. BRING ON DEADPOOL.

LEEE777 - 10/16/2009, 1:15 PM
JOSH @ MAGNETO is gonna be the most thought out movie up there lol.

WOLVERINE 2 we knew was JAPAN, and DEADPOOL better be the merc with the mouth and have his black and red duds!

FOX don't blow it again!

Wolverine 2: Don't really care much for this one, hopefully it's an improvement over the first, even though I enjoyed Origins.

First Class: I want this quite a bit actually. I want it to start a new continuity, get back to the basics, and get all the characters right this time. Hopefully we'll see this one within the next few years.

Deadpool: Definitely the right way to go with ignoring Wolverine's Deadpool. The way they described the movie sounds pretty damn good to me.

Magneto: I don't want this movie. It's so unnecessary, and has a lot of potential to suck. I don't trust it.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS = Got to be the ORIGINAL team of five or don't bother!

[frick] a 90210 FIRST CLASS team spun from BORIGINS!

Damn, no X4 though or GAMBIT!

But great find @ CBM!!

Well, obviously its early days, but she sounds like she knows her stuff and was very honest about Deadpools raping in Origins! I have high hopes for all of these..except First Class which no matter what way they do it is gonna be kiddie, irrelevant, pointless and boring..just like the comics.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 10/16/2009, 1:24 PM
Sigh...lets face it guys. Fox i making all of these so with a track record that includes Elektra and Fantastic Four they're all going to be crap! :( I mean, how can you compare Harry Potter to First Class!?!
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 10/16/2009, 1:24 PM
um, mariko's father fights with a "stick like weapon??" i hope by "stick like weapon" he meant samurai sword. because thats what shingen used, a samurai sword. it was wolverine that used the wooden training sword, because shingen didn't think he deserved to use an actual blade.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 10/16/2009, 1:25 PM
@ ror

the first comics are kiddie, but i actually like them for some reason. its kind of refreshing to have an x-men series set back in the day that doesn't have to follow 50 years of convoluted back story.

They got Deadpool perfectly in the beginning, when he was still Wade. Literally perfect.

But, they did royally rape his character at the end, that sh*t doesn't deserve to get a continuation.

FIRST CLASS - will be a killer movie IF it aint that 90210 sh!Te!!!

DEADPOOL'S - best off forgetting that crap from you know what before hand!!

MAGNETO - Gonna be a deep good old thinking masterpiece movie!

& WOLVERINE 2 - hell lets just hope no pointless X-Cameos and instead, plenty of WOLVERINE RAGE and NINJAS!!!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/16/2009, 1:36 PM
CDB, im just not that big of a fan of the original team in any incarnation. Never was. My favorites were always Wolvie, Storm , Nightcrawler and Colossus..later on i grew like Beast and Jean, but Ice man always annoyed me as did preppy, soldier boy Doucheclops. The early stories just bored me. So whether they reboot it completely(keep dreaming Leee!) or focus on the movie worlds established first class, I cant see it being a very enjoyable movie.
Dmon
Dmon - 10/16/2009, 1:37 PM
I wish they would just have a X-Men 4 and bring back Cyclops and have a Mr. Sinister or Apocalypse story. I know ppl love Wolverine but he is my 2nd favorite character in X-men Cyclops has always been my number one. And him and his family are so the biggest driving force for the X-Men comics. How about a The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix movie that would be cool and they could introduce Cable.

She's out of her bucket and talking out of her ass. She knows jack shit about what she's saying and she's just playing to the croud which is us fanboys. "We want it to stick as close to the source as possible"... now where have i heard that before??? FROM HER OWN GODDAMN MOUTH, no less. And i don't know why the hell she's talking as if she's not a part of Fox to begin with. "Oh i'm not the big bad guy here, they are. They guys who have me on payroll."
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 10/16/2009, 1:40 PM
"MAGNETO - Gonna be a deep good old thinking masterpiece movie!"

Lee, honestly, do you actually believe this? Because Fox is behind it.

Plus, why do you fully support it after you famously declare your hate for Wolverine on every X-Men related article? It makes no sense.

There is absolutely no need for a Magneto movie, no need in the slightest bit. Leave him be.

And now I can't decide if I want to release my X-Men 4 story this weekend or not.

What do you guys think?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 10/16/2009, 1:50 PM
if she's speaking the truth, then they are already screwing up wolverine 2 by giving Lord Shingen a "stick like" weapon. the guy was a samurai, he fought with a samurai sword.

how stupid does this sound to you guys?

"Mariko's father has this stick-like weapon, so Wolverine will have to fight against that."

oh no!!! don't bust me up with your "stick"!!!

lol
Dmon
Dmon - 10/16/2009, 1:51 PM

Exactly..he is THE MAN. He represents THE MAN in every way;) Ah no, he has been ok..sometimes. I mainly just love to hate him. X Force have really utilized him well, completely making him an unbelievable c#nt in every respect, thats how he should always be, because when they try to make him in any way likable it doesn't work for me at all.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 10/16/2009, 1:53 PM
oh yeah she makes it sound just great on this end of things.
But then when we hit the theater it's a whole different story.

I am not listening to a single thing this loopy dame says. She's a bullshitter and a corprate shill and everything she touches turns into CRAP!

WTF!?! That sounds like a complete disaster already! I was hoping that we'd see a movie version of the X-Men's earliest adventures not some Harry Potter type reimagining!!!
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 10/16/2009, 1:59 PM
@ Corndog:
what she is referring to .. or rather, what her handlers/masters/owners have told her to refer to is the first battle Wolverine had against the Ninja Master and mafia boss Lord Shingen.

It was fought using Boken which are wooden practice swords, and not live steel. Wolverine lost the fight, but Lord Shingen spared his life because he considered him too disgracefull to bother killing.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 10/16/2009, 2:03 PM
a "stick like weapon" lol... The Bokken was the preferrential weapon for practice to the ancient Samurai for thousands of years. And in the hands of the right person a Bokken is incredibly deadly
Dmon
Dmon - 10/16/2009, 2:05 PM
@teabag I did not like a lot of what she had to say but I think the point she was trying to make was that the same actor can play 2 "iconic" rolls at the same time. Because alot of ppl believe it cant be done.
Dmon
Dmon - 10/16/2009, 2:13 PM
@Rorschach Well you might not like Cyclops but some of the best X-Men stories revolve around him and his family.

Magicfingers
Magicfingers - 10/16/2009, 2:16 PM
Oh, man! I can't believe some of the cr@p I'm reading.
Wolverine is THE BEST X-Man, IMO... Cyclops was always my least fav out of the X-Men. O.K. He was the leader of the original X-team... but never really deserved such a title.
I agree that Wolverine 2 has potential, but if Mariko's father isn't packing some serious "Japanese Steel", I'm going to be really pissed off!
Deadpool should be rebooted... but only to a set degree. I like Ryan as Wade, that mouthie manner he has is perfect.
NO. Magneto. Movie. Period!
I'm not going to bother with X-Men: First Class. Not worth the time to bash it.
Magicfingers

@DarthMulder- It is true. The Bokken is not only a learning tool, but also a Bad A** weapon in the right hands.
TheGuillotine

Didn't read all the posts ... but if they are going to have Deadpool as he actually is in the comics, then he could laugh of the Wolvy Origins movie and/or make fun of it somehow. I think that would be hilarious.

Deadpool: "And don't get me started on how they treated my character in that sorry *ss excuse of a movie Wolervine: Origins. They all need *ss raped for that atrocity. And now, back to that fighting."

The most telling sentence in that WHOLE article was:
"I don't know that Fox will agree with all our decisions, but we'll see!"
And there is the punch line folks.
