X-Men Reboot Rumors Reveal Team Roster And Magneto Plans - Will Inde Navarrette Play Rogue?

New X-Men reboot rumours have surfaced, this time shedding light on plans for the team's roster, whether Magneto and his Brotherhood will return, and Obsession star Inde Navarrette's potential MCU debut.

20th Century Fox's X-Men movies focused heavily on Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse shifted focus to En Sabah Nur, but still kept the Master of Magnetism in the mix, and it wasn't until 2019's Dark Phoenix that Magneto took a backseat.

However, that left us with arguably the franchise's worst villain yet, Vuk, played by Jessica Chastain. Now, as Marvel Studios gears up to reboot the X-Men franchise, all eyes are on who the mutant team will square off with.

Currently, it's looking like Sebastian Shaw (and the Hellfire Club) and Mister Sinister are in the mix. Whether that means Magneto is being shelved remains to be seen, but we have a few intriguing updates from The Cosmic Circus to share with you today.

According to the site's Alex Perez, Marvel Studios is looking to "deviate away from the whole 'Magneto and the Brotherhood' trope and focus on other villains that haven’t been seen before." Sinister is, as expected, at "the top" of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's list, though what that means for those rumours Adam Driver is playing Shaw isn't clear.

Perez adds that the X-Men reboot is looking to avoid bringing in characters who were part of the Brotherhood in 2000, but posits that there's a chance we'll see Magneto "if they want to establish he exists."

The report also explains that the goal is to bring together the original five X-Men—Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Beast, and Iceman—with "some additions" and "establish a coming-of-age story where these characters who have been in hiding due to fear of rejection or persecution are finally stepping out of the shadows to save the world and prove that not ALL mutants are bad."

Perez also believes there's a 100% chance we'll start seeing other mutants in upcoming MCU projects, similar to how Jean Grey's story was woven into Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

On a side note, The Hollywood Reporter has shared a piece about actors lobbying for roles in Jake Schreier's X-Men reboot and pointed out, "Inde Navarrette recently confirmed she’d met with X-Men director Jake Schreier after revealing Mystique is the mutant she’d most like to play, though rumor has also linked her to Rogue."

Is the trade simply acknowledging online chatter or adding some fuel to the fire that the breakout star of Obsession could be MCU-bound? Only time will tell on that front, as we're still expecting some kind of X-Men announcement at tomorrow's D23 event. Whether a full cast reveal is part of that remains hotly debated, so it might be wise to get your expectations in check.

X-Men is currently expected to be released in theaters in 2028.

@Feralwookiee - well they bothered with tbe new gambit. And tom Holland is doing his best new york accent. And doom sounds east European so. Id say yes they're going to try to make the most comic accurate versions of these characters thay they can

I don't think they should outright avoid Magneto, I think the best idea would be to establish he exists and that there's a history between him and Charles, but save Magneto for something like a future Avengers movie. Set him up a bit like Thanos in the Infinity Saga, but far more morally grey and with more of a possibility of redemption after his villain arc is done.

@AC1 - Notice how every original nemesis of every superhero or group returns in a reboot or sequel. Loki with the Avengers , Joker in the Batman, Lex Luthor in Batman vs Superman. Green Goblin in No way home. Dr Doom in fan4tastic reboot. There’s no way they leave magneto out of the mix. Rest assured the master of magnetism will return.

@AC1 - that would be a good approach imo

I agree , they shouldn’t try to avoid doing Magneto like they are with Doc Ock or Green Goblin it seems for now with MCU Spidey since he’s too intertwined imo with the X-Men for that.

I’d like to see signs of Magneto- things like “Magneto Was Right” graffiti or vague references. Build up over a movie or two to finally unveil him. Again, kind of like Thanos at the end of Avengers.

@SummersEssex - Yes it’s time for Genosha or Krakoa to have its live action debut. Enough with Eric living in the woods or on an island lol.

grendelthing - 8/13/2026, 12:46 PM
@UceOmega - "Genosha" debuted in X-Men: Dark Phoenix but it was more like some hippie commune out on a farm somewhere than an actual island nation for mutants.

Can she do an accent? We just saw her seamlessly switch between 2 obviously different consciousness. Yea I think she can change her voice

Mystique needs to stop being a thing. She was never on the radar before the first movie. Why is she always around and not Jubliee, Morph if you need a shapeshifter, Angel, freaking any one of 100 mutants other than this one random blue chick.

@FleischerSupes - dude I so agree with you. I never understood the mystique hype
I think its because the naked design they went for her in foxmen had all the young teens and knuckledraggers going gaga

Perhaps Xavier enters Cerebro's room and spends time each day searching for his old friend. Also, Cerebro's helmet could be an Erik design and might be an Easter egg.

Xavier is unaware that Erik wears a helmet that blocks Cerebro's signal. Therefore, Xavier doesn't know if his friend is alive or dead, or if he will ever return.

TheVisionary25 - 8/13/2026, 9:39 AM
@Repian - i like that idea…

You could even tease what Xavier is doing for a couple of films before Magneto shows back up and then have him explain their history.

If not Jason Isaacs...
Clive Owen
Jared Harris
Javiar Bardem
Mark Strong
Matthew Goode
John Hamm

In that order!!!!

You mean after a universe reset right? RIGHT?! Ffs Feige, don't take the easy route!!!!

I'm curious if Magneto is still going to be a holocaust survivor. If he's from another universe they could change the timelime though.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 8/13/2026, 9:25 AM
@X75 - If they change that, it’s really not Magneto anymore. They can easily say he has a secondary mutation that slows his aging or have him captured and frozen like Bucky at some point (maybe for the Weapon X program to study). But they must keep that origin for him or it’s not the character
Astroman

@Bucky74 - this ^^^. If they changed Magneto’s back story that would be outrageous. Like casting a white Black Panther levels of bad.

…focus on other villains that haven’t been seen before."
Then why are they doing Shaw and Frost again? Hell, we haven’t seen the Brotherhood of Mutants since 2007 and First Class came out in 2011.

@soberchimera - thinking the same about the Shaw rumor. I’d love to see the hellfire club done well on screen, but what I’d rather see than one movie where hellfire is the villain then another where the brotherhood is the villain then another where morlocks are the villains, is a world where all this stuff exists all the time. The brotherhood is a movement against anti-mutant culture, yes it’s also specifically magneto and a roster of villainous mutants, but it should always have a presence even if in the background. Same with hellfire. It always exists. It doesn’t have to be “the villain” to have a presence in the universe. Magneto should be in Lmost every movie the way Loki is. Don’t build him up to be a boss battle villain. He’s an ever-present, complex character who influences events in the xmen lore in many different ways. To just make him a standard villain misrepresents the character. I have similar feelings about the way doom is being brought in.

"With some additions"
Hopefuly they stay close to the comics here too with Polaris, Havok, Sunfire Banshee. Or Siryn and the female version of Sunfire from Exiles if they want to diversify.

Then Giant size X-Men for the sequel with Wolvie, Storm et al.
LenSpiderman
LenSpiderman - 8/13/2026, 10:08 AM
@ObserverIO - I would love to see a story inspired by all new xmen to bridge the gap between the OG cast and the new cast. That allows for a mostly young original 5 team to take center stage after that. Let the giant sized xmen additions be mostly introduced in other projects before bringing them in in a sequel. Even secret wars could essentially adapt the basic concept of all new xmen in a way, just using the multiverse and incursions instead, then leave it where a new young team is whst se have to look forward to. I suppose that’s sort of how days of future past tried to do it though.

I am jazzed for this.

Give us the original X-Men from the 60s comics.

Don’t give us Ex-Men from today’s Hollyweird.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 8/13/2026, 11:28 AM
I don’t mind Marvel focusing on other villains like Mister Sinister (who i do hope is the main villain for atleast the first film) but i do think it’s important that we get Magneto sooner then later given how key he is to Xavier etc.

Speaking of Sinister , my pick for the character would be Claes Bang…

Also given the relatively young cast so far , it makes sense they would be going for a coming of age approach as the characters embrace who they are and what they can do which can be a nice story!!.

@emeraldtaurus - Yeah I think you only really need Shaw if you're doing the Dark Phoenix thing. They did Shaw and Frost before in First Class and then they were nowhere to be seen when they finally did Dark Phoenix three movies later.
