Johnny Depp and his merry band of swashbucklers took the Memorial Day box office crown away from the X-Men this weekend.

Pirates of the Caribbean: A World's End took in $142 million over the holiday weekend, beating the previous record-holder last year’s X-Men: The Last Stand by about $20 million.

Counting in Thursday evening previews, Pirates 3 took in $156 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

It was the fourth highest grossing movie opening weekend on record.
