X-MEN '97 Creative Team Suggest Someone Other Than [SPOILER] Orchestrated The Attack On Genosha

This week's X-Men '97 saw Genosha come under attack in one of Marvel Studios' most devastating episodes of TV yet. Now, the creative team suggested the culprit won't line up with what we saw in the comics.

In this Wednesday's jaw-dropping episode of X-Men '97, we witnessed the horrifying destruction of Genosha after a Sentinel attack that comic book fans will likely remember from Grand Morrison and Frank Quitely's iconic New X-Men run.

"Remember It" ended with the brutal deaths of Magneto and Gambit, not to mention countless other mutants. Fans have since theorised that the time-travelling Cable could make things right, while there are also many suggestions out there regarding who orchestrated the attack.

Of course, readers of Morrison's Marvel work will know that it was Professor X's twin sister, Cassandra Nova, who unleashed the Sentinel attack on the page. Does that mean she's guaranteed to make an appearance in X-Men '97, though?

"I wouldn't get my hopes up for Cassandra Nova being a huge villain in our show," supervising producer/head director Jake Castorena told Inverse (via Toonado.com). "But what I will say is, I don't think people will be disappointed with our choices. I like Cassandra Nova for what she ultimately boils down to."

Episide 5 director Emi Yonemura adds, "I love her because she is a challenge for Xavier. I really love the tensions that she brings, the whole other level that she brings. I love her character design as well."

"I cannot say where we go, but I think what's so nice about using the original series and the comics for where we start [is that it] gives us so many options with so many rich characters like Cassandra to get to play with."

In the comics, Cassandra Nova was a "Mummudrai," a spirit that's considered the equal and opposite of a person in Shi'ar culture. However, given Charles Xavier's incredibly powerful latent mutant powers, his Mummudrai took on a physical form in the womb as his "twin."

The baby Charles instinctively recognised her as a threat and the ensuing battle saw his and Cassandra's mother miscarry the X-Men leader's sister.

It was later revealed she'd survived as a mass of cells in a sewer wall (seriously), managing to build a body for herself while planning the ultimate revenge on Charles.

X-Men '97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

The first five episodes of X-Men '97 are now streaming on Disney+ with new instalments following weekly.

It's Trask, innit? Heh.

Nice job mentioning that Nova is a Mummudrai, Josh.
Man, i f*cking love Morrison. :)

@Doomsday8888 - I'm thinking it's Magneto. He felt his hands were tied having to lead the X-Men and join the UN and play by the flatscans rules. He was frustratingly stifled. So he engineered the attack on Genosha to galvanize his people to go to war.
They did say they were inspired by 9/11 and how hat changed the world and one of the things that changed people's perceptions of the world after 9/11 was the idea that that it was an inside job used to galvanize the US to go to war.

:/

I don't i would like that.

@ObserverIO - I’ve been thinking more and more about the Magneto being behind it idea over the last day.

For all we know, he could still be villainous and playing everyone. This false flag attack could get him the support to go after humans.

Also, when he knocked the Professor X statue, it almost seemed intentional. As if he a) wanted Prof X’s influence in the movement minimized and b) just didn’t give a F for the people it landed on.

The only potential hole in the argument was that he died saving Morlocks. But he could have wanted to martyr himself to bolster that movement.

Interested to see where this goes.

@mountainman @ObserverIO - I don't know man. Magneto would never commit genocide on mutants. I just can't see it.

And mountainman made a really good point. Why would he orchestrate this whole attack but stick around and try to save people? Why would he give his life fighting the giant Sentinel? You can make the argument he was trying to martyr himself, but Magneto would 100% want to lead the war against humans if it ever came to that. I really can't see him committing genocide and making himself a martyr only to not be there when his entire reason for doing these things happens.

Also, Cable said, "He's coming!". But Magneto was already there. And if Magneto made a martyr of himself then Cable couldn't be talking about him because Magneto would be dead.

It seems pretty obvious it's either Apocalypse or Bastion. And I'm leaning more towards Bastion.

We already saw a picture of Bastion on Forge's wall. And the last episode names are "Tolerance is Extinction 1-3,". Almost like Operation Zero Tolerance.

@mountainman @CorndogBurglar - I don't think he died. I think him and leech and whoever else was in that electro-magnetic bubble survived. No body no death. I don't remember seeing his body at the end of the episode. I have seen it twice so far, but it all happens so fast, maybe I missed it.

But yeah, Bastion is a good bet, it's probably Bastion.

@ObserverIO - I mean I don't see why there would be a body left. That energy beam that hit him & the others would've vaporised them, like it did to Madelyn and Banshee.

@CorndogBurglar @ObserverIO -

All good points. I mainly don’t think Magento is behind it simply because that’s a pretty dark and crazy place to take this. I know this show has been pretty mature, but that’s like Invincible level stuff there.

Also with the 9/11 comparisons, even by DeMayo, do you think they’d want the drama of having the head of the government that was the victim of the attack orchestrate it?

Bastion makes the most sense, simply based on easter eggs set up and comic stories that could be inspiring that 3 part finale.

@Surveyor - that is an extremely good point. Did we see him get vaporized. Am I gonna "have to" watch this a third time, lol? [frick] it, I'm gonna do it anyway, lol.

@ObserverIO - I definitely think it’s Magneto. Or a mind controlled Magneto because he hasn’t been wearing his helmet so he’s definitely susceptible to mind control.

Seeing as he was already on a picture on Forge's wall together with Doctor Adler from S1, I wouldnt be suprised if it was Bastion.

with the ending 3 parter adapting Operation: Zero Tolerance = Tolerance Is Extinction.

So Xavier's coming back, huh? It does make sense when you think of the Shi'ar connections.

When you go to report someone here one of the options is for spoilers, it's right below spamming. How do we report Josh for that? It's clear he is doing it on purpose and seems to have disdain for the community that visits here as it's consistent and constant now.

I think it's Bastion given that he seemed to appear in the picture with Forge (from when he created the tech that took Storm's powers away)

Bastion is the obvious choice. Magneto would never sacrifice thousands of mutants to further his cause. That would be an unforgivable instance of character assassination on their part.

The Zero Tolerance storyline featured Bastion, this is when I gave up comic books the first time.

I’m hoping that it was perpetrated by humans, thereby galvanizing the mutants to unite and usher in the krakoan age in the show. I’m not saying they will go that route, but it would be amazing! The Five, The Quiet Council and especially the Resurrection Protocols would mean that no mutant would truly die
OrionPax
OrionPax - 4/13/2024, 9:45 AM
That being said though, Nimrod or Bastion would be a safe bet. If not them Gyrich is still alive and in prison, it’s possible he could have orchestrated it

Great episode. Nice spoiler in the title... Depending on how much they're wanting to comment on real life current events, perhaps magneto did it to help militarize the mutants against humans 🤔

"But what I will say is, I don't think people will be disappointed with our choices. I like Cassandra Nova for what she ultimately boils down to."

Based on this quote, and Cassandra Nova boils down being an evil version of Xavier, my wild guess is:

Onslaught.
