X-Men '97's three-part "Tolerance Is Extinction" finale kicked off today and it saw the team set out to stop Bastion's plan to destroy mutantkind.

Cable explains that, in his timeline, Bastion has created a world where the few remaining mutants are subservient to his technologically advanced humans (who have all been infected by a new strain of the techno-organic virus that led to Nathan being sent into the future as a baby).

With Rogue still comatose, the X-Men see if they can learn more about Bastion; it turns out that, after his father was infected by future technology, Bastion was conceived and mutated into a being comprised of Nimrod, the Sentinel Master Mold, and a human.

The villain has turned countless humans into Prime Sentinels and, back at his base, he converses with some familiar faces before we learn that Magneto remains in his grasp and that Valerie Cooper is very much alive.

She's in cahoots with Bastion but was unaware of his plans to attack Genosha. Clearly regretting her actions, she speaks to Magneto, though the former X-Men leader remains silent.

Plenty of action follows as Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Cable are pursued by the powerful new Sentinels and Wolverine and Nightcrawler attempt to protect Rogue back at the X-Mansion. Beast is incapacitated by his journalist friend - also a Prime Sentinel - and the team's base eventually burns to the ground (Jubilee and Sunspot, meanwhile, are captured).

However, just as it looks like the X-Men are done for, Val decides to free Magneto. Captured by Bastion, she declares, "Magneto was right."

The Master of Magnetism unleashes a magnetic shockwave across the globe which incapacitates the Sentinels, but in doing so, declares war on humanity. While Bastion and Mister Sinister are still out there, it seems the heroes now have a bigger problem!

Luckily, it's then that a spaceship crashes to Earth. Discovered by Wolverine and Morph, it opens to reveal Professor X. He calls his X-Men to arms, setting the stage for "Tolerance Is Extinction - Part 2" next week.

X-Men '97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

Eight episodes of X-Men '97 are now streaming on Disney+ with new instalments following weekly. You can learn more about the cameos we mentioned earlier in this recap by clicking here.

@Vigor - When i saw the four that heard the call I couldn't help but wonder if this was foreshadowing for the movie team.

Like I can see Scott, Jean, Storm and Beast being the movie line-up and we get Iceman as the young kid that's introduced to the team and becomes a member.

It's like the OG X-Men, but with Storm instead of Angel. You have two women, one black woman, a hairy blue guy and a gay dude. So they wouldn't need to worry about diversity, the only white, straight male on the team would be Scott.

@ObserverIO - I can totally see that being the case. Hits every checkbox in a good way. Everyone would be satisfied

@ObserverIO - I agree well said! Great team it’s pretty much the OG team and naturally includes organic diversity without pushing it on anyone or forcing it The Last Jedi style.

you really should make an article for each 2 second cameo that poped up in the episode, cause you'd make a lot more money that way and the people here will really like you more . Also remember to disable the comments as words can hurt you.

This is the blueprint, no reason for MS to mess it up, series is legit giving me high hopes, man.

I say this also because...i kinda don't like how Marvel Comics have raped Chuck's character over the years, cause literally in every other medium he's a good man, still a dreamer full of hope, granted the FoX-Men played a big role in that but still...
He should be Marvel's Martin Luther King, not f*cking Niccolò Machiavelli...

X-Men '79 have kinda protected both him and Scott from certain plotpoints from the comics and they are bigger men for it but yeah...to many...er...interesting storylines that could push em to taint Charles' character...
Deadly Genesis...Original Sin, shit WOLVERINE Origins' Original Sin!
What happened with the Danger Room...The Krakoa era, Illuminati, Cassandra Nova, Legion, ehhh damn you Chuck...

@Doomsday8888 - I kinda get what you're saying. A bunch of writers will make the mistake of thinking adding grey to a character means making them a sociopath or an about-face antagonist. That's part of what I'm enjoying about the current FF run. At the end of the day, Mr. Fantastic loves his family, even when it seems like he's not considering their feelings.

@oldnoname
I'm fine with Chuck having a couple of dark secrets, him being misguided and commiting some mistakes while having good intentions is understandable.

Thing is, shit got outta control in the comics, it's no longer fun on the contrary...it's clichè at this point, everytime they reveal some dark secret about him, i roll my eyes.

Magnus on the other hand becomes more noble each passing year but that's called character progression, it's different, it's just, it's good.

oldnoname - 5/1/2024, 3:43 PM
@Doomsday8888 - Magnus is likely hitting his most likeable at this moment during Fall of X. I keep hoping they reveal an altruistic twist in Charles's character path; but I'm losing faith. Even Hickman's era had Charles moving a little weird (except that seemed more purposeful)

All thanks to Al Ewing, he's a great writer in general, works well on a character like Magneto.
Too bad it's all done now, the last thing he did was making him accept himself with all his flaws and everthing, talk about GROWTH!

Charles on the other hand...gotta agree with everything you said, felt the same way, it was more subtle under Hickman but now...seems like in his effort to save mutantkind he will gladly sell humanity as well, in other words, his soul.

Which is not that different with what happend to Hank, right? Although his fall from grace was built quite well over the years, to the point where he was no longer different from Dark Beast, heh.

Too bad MCU synergy ruined that storyline.
oldnoname
oldnoname - 5/1/2024, 5:09 PM
@Doomsday8888 - I had no clue how they would pull hank out of that path organically if they did; but they went with "eh cut replace."

My only gripe with the magneto stuff is actually how all the characters seem to be showering him with love (pre resurrection too) and Charles, despite what he's done for them, always seems to be on thin ice. Idk that rubs me the wrong way.

Also I love Al Ewing. I want to go back and read the other books he's worked on.

First of all, it's refreshing to talk about comics on this site, bless you. :P
Second of all, we basically share the same views, i actually don't have a problem with the love Magnus is getting but you're totally right on Chuck, it's like the writers are hellbent on putting everything and everyone against him, it's like we can't have pure things in this life, the man even died for his dreams!

With Hank, what can i say, what they did was a cop out, there was no need to quickly find a way to turn him on the side of angels, just like it took years to break him bad, they could've just as easily taken their time to build him again but what Percy was forced to do (i reckon) was cheap as hell imho.

@Doomsday8888 - Haha it is a little alarming how infrequently comicbook convos happen in these threads.

Exactly. I think they've actually done a great job with Magneto and his redemption feels real and organic (especially after Al's resurrection mini). Ironically it reads like Max is the only one that really cares about Xavier anymore based on the resurrection mini. I'm gonna avoid a a rant, but I hate that all the other mutants have decided that Xavier apparently gleefully ushered mutants to their deaths during the Hellfire Gala, even though it was clear that the booby trapped gates were an unknown trick and Xavier was trying to save them all.

The beast stuff; part of me thought they'd just let it be what it was. Beast is a villain the end. I used to love beast, so it was sad, but I wouldn're respected it more. Ironically, my main issue with evil beast storyline was that it felt like they were running out of reasons to keep him in conflict with X force. I was waiting for him to actually go do his own thing but he kept coming back to pick on wolverine lol.

No offence but was the Unbelievable Twist?

They've shown Charles in that episode the other week and we did see the news broadcast in the very episode he returned, it was obvious he was going to return, if not this episode the final one of the season.

Magneto sending out an emp I predicted once he was free of his restraints.

Magneto saying enough and proceeds to emp the entire planet is something I never knew I wanted to see. Holy crap! I need this show to live on forever. When I saw Spidey I gasped, hoping to hear Christopher Daniel Barnes but nothing came out. Soon ^_^

Great episode. Amazing action, another cool Morph moment, Wolverine and Nightcrawler got to shine, tons of Marvel cameos, and the exposition was efficient and didn’t slow it down.

@RedFury - Absolutely. Wolverine hasn’t had enough to do this season and this episode gave him his due. And that Nightcrawler 3 sword action plus getting to see the perspective inside the BAMF was so cool!
RedFury

@mountainman - man that bamf perspective was such a cool add to the scene. I don't think I've ever tried to visualize that before, and it felt perfect the way they did it.

Everytime an episode ends, I honestly can't help myself from saying "this show is amazing" out loud to no one haha.

Imagine if Marvel was able to make a live action as great as this season has mostly been. Tall order but I’m hoping the success of this show will show Marvel the way..
Opticblast
Opticblast - 5/1/2024, 8:46 PM
This show is setting too high of a bar that no live action movie reboot can ever hope to accomplish I'm afraid. They're not going to be able to satisfy everyone and Feige knows it. Therefore, my guess is the new movies will be made for the younger Disney crowd and general audience while 97 is being made for us older fans.

Shocking! Jaw-dropping! Shocking! Jaw-dropping! Will you ever get tired of being so formulatic and tiresome, Josho? Hang it up at this point and save yourself some dignity. You're about as interesting as that mushed green pea slop you crumpet dunkers are so fond of.
