X-MEN '97 Stars Reveal They Had To Re-Audition For Their X-MEN: THE ANIMATED SERIES Roles

X-Men '97 has been celebrated for bringing back X-Men: The Animated Series' lead stars, but they've now revealed that they had to re-audition for the opportunity to reprise their most iconic roles...

When the news broke that X-Men '97 would bring back X-Men: The Animated Series' original stars, the response from fans was overwhelmingly positive. Not everyone has reprised their roles, of course, but those who haven't have still been enlisted to play different characters.

For example, Jennifer Hale is the new Jean Grey, while Catherine Disher - the original Jean - has been tapped to lend her voice to Dr. Valerie Cooper.

Part of the reason for those casting changes could be because the X-Men: The Animated Series cast had to audition for the chance to reprise their original roles! In an interview with IGN (via Toonado.com), Wolverine actor Cal Dodd and Rogue actress Lenore Zann confirmed they had to go through the usual casting process before boarding the revival.

"The scene that they picked [for the audition] was so obscure," Dodd recalls. "'What do you mean? He doesn't yell at anyone here, or scream or be ignorant or be funny, underhanded funny?'"

"The Chief turns to him and says, 'The people are very happy, and it's all because of you,'" he adds. "[Wolverine] said, 'So do I. I feel happy too. I feel, I don't know, at peace.' But that's a scene that they picked me to do, and so unlike Wolverine, the voice that he ends up doing all the time. I found that interesting."

Zann, meanwhile, got an email informing her that Disney was working on a new series and later heard from casting director Meredith Layne. Despite not knowing what the project was, she soon recognised the lines they had asked her to read.

"They were the lines from the original show," Zann explains. "And I was like, 'Oh! It's Rogue! I'll just do Rogue.' And so I did it, and sent it off. And about a month later, three weeks later, I got a call saying, 'Teah, the producers want to meet with you on Zoom.'"

"So then we went on Zoom, and they got me to read with Meredith on Zoom, and then at the end of it they were like, 'Oh my god, Lenore, we just love you. Would you please be in the show? Because we really want you in the show.' I was like, 'Absolutely! You got me.'"

Seeing as decades have passed since X-Men: The Animated Series concluded, it makes sense that Marvel Studios felt the need to check that the cast could still do an effective job of bringing these iconic characters to life.

There may have also been creative reasons for some of the changes, but the original stars are being treated with a great deal of respect from what we can see. The roles which have been recast - Ray Chase as Cyclops comes to mind - are also receiving a lot of love from fans.

The first three episodes of X-Men '97 are now streaming on Disney+.

So much for Feige refusing to do it without them.

@IronDean2099 - I am sure it’s for formality reasons. Also, he may have had to double check to make sure they still sounded like the characters. Heck, the old jubilee and gambit are in the show, but playing other characters. Because they don’t sound the same. So, if Cal couldn’t pull off Wolverine, he’d get another role. But someone else would play Wolverine.

While I'm glad they are there, the returning voice actors have been litte hit-and-miss. Storm is basically perfect, you can barely tell the actress has gotten older, and the Beast is almost there, breing obviously raspier, but not to a distracting degree. Meanwhile, Wolverine and Sinister can't do their original voices anymore, but they still fit the characters in a "generic" sense (I.E. If this was a brand new standalone X-Men cartoon, which just happened to bring in some of the older actors to play new versions of their original roles, I wouldn't think twice about it). Unfortunately that leaves Rogue as the weakest link (at least so far, we do know that at least Nightcrawler will have his original voice actor and we haven't heard him yet), who just sounds like an older person trying really hard to sound younger.

@FinnishDude - I dunno, the only voices that were just overly off to me Xavier and Sinister. In Sinister's case I just assumed they were going more in the direction of his current comic's iteration. I just remember him coming off as more menacing sinister than what has been shown so far.

Rogue sounds like an old lady trying to sound young. All the other voices are fine. The Rogue VA is doing a good job and it’s nice to have her back, it just sounds off.

Yeah, people's voices change over 30 years. They would have been stupid to do otherwise.
