BOX OFFICE: 2 GUNS Takes Aim At $30 Million Opening
The response from critics has been mixed to say the least, but 2 Guns - which is based on the BOOM! Studios comic book series and stars Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington - looks set to earn a respectable $30 million at the North American box office this weekend. Read on for details!
According to The Wrap, 2 Guns looks set to become the #1 movie at the North American box office this weekend with around $30 million. However, the critically panned follow-up to The Smurfs will rule overseas. It's also a possible that the animated sequel will somehow steal the top spot at home, but only over a five day period due to the fact that it was released yesterday (earning $5.2 million in the process). "We feel good about the weekend," Universal’s head of distribution Nikki Rocco told the site. "We’re a good counter to ‘The Smurfs,’ but there’s still plenty of competition out there. ‘The Wolverine’ isn’t going anywhere, so we’ll see." They're predicting a slightly more conservative $25 million opening, although there's currently no word on how all this will affect The Wolverine's second weekend. What are you going to check out?
For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench (Denzel Washington) and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) have been reluctantly attached at the hip. Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down. When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way.
