Promo Posters For 47 RONIN Starring Keanu Reeves

Some new (low-res) promo posters have been leaked for Universal's upcoming samurai movie, 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves. One of the posters says "2012" so it's safe to say these were made before the release date changed. Check them out after the jump...

The troupe of banished samurai long to restore their honor and find vengeance against the treacherous Lord Kira (played by Asano, who is in theaters now as Hogun in Thor) who was responsible for the death of their master. Kai is the uneasy compatriot in their company and his standing will be questioned even more as he falls in love with Mika (Shibasaki), daughter of the fallen master. The film presents a quest where the ronin (the term for samurai with no master) face trials that test their mettle and their loyalty to one another.




Directed by Carl Erik Rinsch, and starring Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Tadanobu Asano and Rinko Kikuchi, 47 Ronin is set to hit theatres on December 25, 2013.

I am a hypocrite. I'll say it, because I enjoyed The Last Samurai very much. I also don't know the story of this film and/or if it makes sense for what they are doing. But isn't it just bizarre how these films come out with American stars?

I don't know anything about this film, but i'm loving the posters. Reeves looks pretty badass. But of course there was no good reason to cast an Asian in the role of a master-less samurai, not when you have Keanu available.

Not that i am defending the choice, but Reeves character for the movie is half british half japanese and was created just for the film. His character was never in the original story. So really they just wanted to toss a white boy in for funsys

This looks absolutely horrid to me. I have read the story of the 47 ronin which in itself is a really interesting story and would be fine to make into an actual film. Yet they had to go in and add in a white guy that is pretty insulting and they make the main villain go from a corrupt shogunate official to some mystical super evil samurai. This will most likely do shit in Japan which the story of the 47 ronin is one of their greatest national legends.

The story for all who do not know it is a daimyo or feudal lord is insulted by a shogunate official who he then attacks the official over the dishonor. This being a very heinous offense is forced to commit seppuku or ritual suicide. His land is taken by the shogunate but 47 of his most loyal men plan to avenge him and take steps over the next 2 years. They then attack the officials mansion in Edo killing him and then all committing seppuku together to pay for their crimes. This story is very famous in Japan since it shows the highest commitments of loyalty, sacrifice, and honor in ones duty.

Also I will say I liked Last Samurai at least there it made sense to have a white guy with the samurai. We also had believable villains and a great performance by Ken Watanabe but here we get a white guy shoehorned into a though romanticized but still real Japanese event.

These posters look very cool. I'll check out this movie when it comes out on DVD. By the way, I also enjoyed "Last Samurai"; it was a good drama.
