Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood, Battleship) is now frontrunner in the race to fill the iconic role of 'Tarzan' in David Yates' re-imagining of the iconic character, while Samuel L. Jackson (Marvel's The Avengers, Django Unchained) is also being eyed for a pivotal role. Read on for details!

Variety reports that Alexander Skarsgard is now frontrunner for the starring role in David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and Warner Bros.' live-action take on "Tarzan". The actor (who is often suggested for superhero roles by comic book fans due to his height and build) is said to be the director's top choice to play the title character, and while the studio has yet to greenlight any casting decisions for the film, it is thought that he will soon be offered the role. Filming is set to begin next summer, while the site has the following logline for the film. "John Clayton III [is] known around the world as the famous "ape man" Tarzan. Years after he's re-assimilated into society, he's asked by Queen Victoria to investigate the goings-on in the Congo. Tarzan teams with an ex-mercenary named George Washington Williams to save the Congo from a fierce warlord who controls a massive diamond mine." Apparently, Samuel L. Jackson is being sought after to play Williams, although that too is in the very early stages at this point.

I thought they might have Sam play Jane.

Good casting I guess, still no interest in a Tarzan movie. Greystoke with Chris Lambert said all there was to say, and even the Disney flick was fine. Unless they plan on adding a sci-fi twist or something, what's the point?

WOW. Yes.

I (for some reason) was completely against this movie being made, but picturing Alex playing Tarzan makes me want to watch it. Dude should be in a lot more movies

Sounds decent and i like Skarsgård´s acting. Im not too sure he is the best choice for the role but who knows. Maybe he can surprise me. I prefer Henry Cavill thou.

Nomis@ priceless xD

I kinda think his height is wrong for the role. Tarzan is supposed to be this graceful, agile character who is jumping and flipping all over the place and swinging through trees. I can't see a 6'5 actor pulling off graceful or agile.

So how does this affect his role on Tru Blood?

Ror@ I think the point is in bringing the fantastical side of Tarzan stories to the big screen properly. Or so i hope. Leopard Men would be pretty badass in big screen.

Oh and making money with new wannabe franchise is the other point. ;)

So the plot of this movie is "White man vs the evil Black native who is preventing foreign interests from exploiting the natural reserves."?!?!?

O.......K.

Charlie Hunnam could be a cool Tarzan too. He looks little bit more like the Disney version which seems to have taked its inspiration from Tarzan of the Apes cover.

Guh. Really?

Y'know, it's weird to consider, but at one point Tarzan movies were the way CBMs are now. People just couldn't seem to get enough of some guy in a loincloth wrestling rubber crocodiles while an ambiguously accented woman stood around and helpfully bit her lip.

Seriously, if the internet had been extant back then, there would've been a tarzanmovie.com for set pics and so on.

...so, yeah, they've got to be doing this just to get their hands into the wallets of female Skarsgard fans, right? It's certainly not because there's no way for all five remaining Tarzan fans to get their fix...

That would be some nice casting. The story sounds interresting too. I thought they would be doing the origin again, but this is a nice surprise.

I think Alexander Skarsgard could play a good Tarzan (depends on the writing and directing of the film) and as for Samuel L. Jackson, I could watch just about anything he's in.

Make it in the vein of Jackson´s King Kong and could be really cool.

Being an African American male myself, I can think of a lot of politically incorrect roles that Samuel L. Jackson could be playing in a Tarzan movie. I hope I'm very wrong!

So in this movie Tarzan will have been rescued from the jungle? That's different.

I think Alexander Skarsgard would make a great Tarzan.

I wonder which actresses they're looking at to play Jane?
