ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Outperforms Weekend Projections, But Is This Enough For A Sequel?

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL has been projected to bomb since the film was announced, but with a surprise success of an opening weekend, might the Robert Rodriguez-directed flick end up profitable?

Even since its years in development hell, Alita: Battle Angel has always faced an uphill battle. The challenge of introducting a cult intellectual property to an international audience has been hit and miss, but unlike attempts like Ghost In The Shell and Blade Runner 2049, Alita had a wild card up her sleeve - box office god James Cameron.

This weekend, and since its Thursday opening, the Cameron produced-film has grossed $33 million total, with an estimated $42 estimated through Monday. Domestically, this surpasses the low expectations many analysts had for the emerging property, with a disaterous $23 million suggested by box office tracking. On the bright side, with the great reception the film is getting from fans, its safe to say the film will gross over $100 million in the United States. But with a $170 million production budget and a studio pegged $350-$400 million breakeven point, Alita will need great legs internationally to warrant a sequel.

While the typical blockbuster usually performs betweel 2-3 times its opening weekend in the States, the US alone is clearly won't make back its gargantuan production budget, which will ultimately rely on international territories. Already, Alita has grossed $94 million without China and is on track to match around $225 million without the territory. With tracking at around $50 million in China, the most likely outcome in the Middle Kingdom is similar to the United States, a total around $100 million. This is due to China being frontloaded compared to the States, where blockbusters usually perform double their opening weekend. Adding the totals of all these predictions, the international gross should be in the low $400 million arena. Whether a small profit like is enough to justify a sequel is up to the studio, as well as the how word of mouth performs in the up and coming weeks. Regardless, Fox must be very happy that the film managed to subvert everyone's expectations.

I didn't hate this movie, I can say that its one of those cases where I can see a sequel being amazing. While this movie was a bit lacking in story, I didn't know what the time frame of the movie was, and that there is about a 10 minute stretch of the ending that is pointless in my opinion, I really dug the action and thought it had heart.

I honestly can see James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez actually cared about the movie and making a saga.

On my scale (Participated-Bronze-Silver-Gold-Platinum) I'd say a good silver.

I saw it yesterday in IMAX 3D. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it. Just a satisfactory big budget sci-fi action movie that would have been revolutionary 10-20 years ago, but kind of ‘meh’ today.

I look forward to seeing it play on FX 5 times a day in the not-too-distant future.

I actually saw it and enjoyed it.
Lacked any kind of story but it had great action and some fun characters.

@Pedrito - I'm a bit curious how you can say it didn't have a story. I thought the entire thing was very story-driven.

@Dartanian300 - Well just think about how much more they could’ve told us. About the city up there, the big war, the bad guy, about Alita’s past. It’s all a mystery perhaps to be explored in sequels, hopefully.

Also, there’s not much direction to the plot. Things kinda just happen due to people’s motivations coming into conflict rather fortuitously, which works out fine at times since some of the characters are developed well enough. I liked the movie overall.

@Pedrito - I guess I could see that. For me, I felt they packed a lot into the movie. Who she is, where she came from, what she can do, the whole lore of the city and the city above. Just a lot for general audiences and I thought they did a great job telling us everything without getting people lost.

The things they didn't tell us definitely comes from trying to adapt a long-form story into a single movie. It's clearly meant to be the start of a franchise, but it feels earned in a way few other supposed franchise-starters have.

After Ghost in the Shell, I wasn't expecting too much from another Hollywood Manga adaption, but this is a really good movie.

The action is outstanding and the visual effects work is some of the best I have seen in a modern movie. Alita is a genuinely likable character and Rosa Salazar does a great job of melding teenage innocence with brutal rage during the action scenes.

I just had a fun time watching it and came out with zero complaints. I hope it does well enough to justify a sequel because I would want to see more of this world and these characters.
