American Made tells the real life story of one Barry Seal. Barry was a pilot during the late 70's early 80's who gets roped into being a CIA informant. Tasked with taking off the books photos of Columbian drug farms, Barry becomes embroiled in a world of deciet, drugs and an awful lot of money.
Barry, as played by the ever charming Tom Cruise, is a likeable, happy go lucky type of guy who asks too fewer questions and is happy with being silenced by boat loads of money. As the CIA push him ever further behind enemy lines and into the path of Pablo Escabar and the Columbian drug cartels, Barry's life goes from wild to out of this world insane. This true story is so crazy and full of bonkers moments it's almost hard to believe its actually based on someones life and yet it is. Told as close to accurate as possible Barry's story is absorbing and thoroughly engaging. This is aided emmensely by a stellar performance by Tom Cruise who proves he is still as fun and likeable as ever as he seeks to wash our memories of earlier misfires *cough The Mummy *cough!
Told through a series of old tapes, American Made is wonderfully paced and well captured allowing for a neat glossing over of less important or somewhat less exciting aspects of Barry's life and instead allows the viewer to focus in on the ludicrous ride that was Barry's time with the CIA and the Columbian drug trade. A movie that for some reason came out over seas before it did America (we find that real weird??) it was a movie we here at Rewind Replay found incredibly enjoyable. When it arrives in cinemas in America later this week, we encourage you to go and see it as Barry's story is one for the books.
