As expected, The Bourne Legacy took the #1 spot this weekend at the North American box office with $40.2 million reports Deadline. The reboot starring Jeremy Renner (Marvel's The Avengers, The Town) made an additional $7.8 million from 13 small territories, giving it a current worldwide cume of $48.1 million. It won't open in the UK until Monday, while Universal will roll it out into several other territories over the next few weeks. The Bourne Identity (2002) opened to $27.1 million, The Bourne Supremacy (2004) opened to $52.3 million, and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) opened to $69.3 million. Meanwhile, The Dark Knight Rises has ended its three week reign at the top as it fell to #3 with a still very impressive $19.5 million. That gives it a domestic total of $390.1 million.

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

STARRING:

Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross
Rachel Weisz as Stephanie Snyder
Edward Norton as Byer
Joan Allen as Pam Landy
David Strathairn as Noah Vosen
Albert Finney as Dr. Albert Hirsch
Scott Glenn as Ezra Kramer
