Oh my God, it's Jason Bourne! According to sources, a new Bourne film is indeed in the works at Universal from All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger attached, but will Matt Damon return?

Deadline is reporting that a new Jason Bourne film is in the works at Universal Pictures, with Academy Award-nominee Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western FrontYour Honor) attached to direct.

The film is still in the very early stages of development, so there aren't many additional details available at this time nor is there a script in place. Berger has, however, been in high demand across Hollywood since his recent Oscar nomination and his involvement is certainly an exciting prospect for this possible sixth installment.

As for Oscar-winning leading man Matt Damon, who starred as the iconic Jason Bourne in four of the five films, the studio is planning on approaching him about returning to his career-defining role once a script is finalized, so expect that meeting to happen within the next few weeks/months, although getting Damon back onboard will first require a worthwhile story and script. Getting Berger signed on first should be a step in the right direction if they hope to entice Damon, but nailing that script is also of the utmost importance.

Berger is best known for his German epic anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front, which was nominated for nine Academy Awards earlier this year, ultimately winning four for Best International Feature Film, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.

His other credits include the features All My Loving and Jack, as well as TV shows Your HonorPatrick Melrose, and The Terror. He is currently in post-production on the British thriller Conclave, which will star Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini. Berger is also in pre-production on an Untitled Volkswagon Project, so it may be a little while before we get another update on the Bourne front, although hopefully, we'll hear about some writers relatively soon.

Matt Damon headlined four of the five films in the long-running Bourne franchise, kicking off with 2002's The Bourne Identity, which was followed by 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum. Jeremy Renner took over the reins briefly in 2012's The Bourne Legacy where he played a different character, but Damon eventually returned to the driver's seat for 2016's Jason Bourne

The five films have grossed over $1.636 billion at the global box office, with The Bourne Ultimatum still holding its spot as the highest-grossing film in the franchise with a box office collection of $442.8 million globally.

It’s over. He gained his memory and reconciled with his past, so close the door.

@GhostDog - Unless doing a crossover with Renner that would seem highly unlikely I agree, have to be a damn good story otherwise leading to his death probably otherwise how do you get to a good ending unless doing the crossover with the other stuff brought in with the Renner iteration.

As a fan of the Bourne franchise, I would never say no to a sequel. However, it ended perfectly so idk if they need this.

Fan of the franchise, but this is a perf example of milking an IP to death.

Potentially leading to a flop and or a reboot

The Tread Stone show wasn’t bad, maybe something else set in the same universe. Idk, reluctant to say not interested. But concerned that it’s done right

As long as he takes down the new Treadstone for good, ending it permanently and sharing it online for everyone to see and making sure what happened to him never happens again.

Don’t need it, but if they go forward with it, they end it and he’s left alone or dies trying.

I could see them make a new Treadstone project (like in the TV series) and tie it together with a definitive ending for the character of Jason Bourne and maybe adding Renner in some capacity to tie it to the fourth movie.

But if Universal wants a continuous spy franchise they need to detach this series from the character of Jason Bourne (unless they go full reboot). I don’t see Matt Damon doing this for much longer.
Heck not everyone can be Tom Berenger in the Sniper series

There are a lot of threads from the whole franchise that can be picked up again, so I could see it work. Hope they bring back Renner (even just for one scene) again as well

@bkmeijer1 - I want that and a John Wick kind of continuity on the action scenes.

Too many fast cuts in my opinion.

@MadThanos - same. The shaky cam, fastcut action is something I really don't like. Prefer steady cam with less cuts so the fight choreography becomes much more prominent

Getting Berger on board certainly is intriguing and as a fan of the franchise , there is a part of me that wants to know what Jason is up to now…

However , the story ended well in Ultimatum and Jason Bourne back in 2016 was a mediocre attempt imo to revitalize the franchise hence it makes me think it’s best to just let sleeping dogs lie so to speak.

Matt Damon’s always said the only way he’ll do more Bourne movies is if Paul Greengrass is directing. No Greengrass, no Damon.

ALL Quiet on the Western Front shoulda won the Oscar. Not that dopey, stupidly boring film that won by sake of nu Hollywood virtue. This is just a fact.

Jason Bourne 2016 seemed like a wannabe Bourne movie and not really a part of the first 3. Bourne Legacy seemed more legit than it did.

A new Bourne with chubby Damon nearing 60 years old would be an unintentional spoof. It should be called - "HAHAHA! It's Jason Bourne".
