Deadline is reporting that a new Jason Bourne film is in the works at Universal Pictures, with Academy Award-nominee Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front; Your Honor) attached to direct.
The film is still in the very early stages of development, so there aren't many additional details available at this time nor is there a script in place. Berger has, however, been in high demand across Hollywood since his recent Oscar nomination and his involvement is certainly an exciting prospect for this possible sixth installment.
As for Oscar-winning leading man Matt Damon, who starred as the iconic Jason Bourne in four of the five films, the studio is planning on approaching him about returning to his career-defining role once a script is finalized, so expect that meeting to happen within the next few weeks/months, although getting Damon back onboard will first require a worthwhile story and script. Getting Berger signed on first should be a step in the right direction if they hope to entice Damon, but nailing that script is also of the utmost importance.
Berger is best known for his German epic anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front, which was nominated for nine Academy Awards earlier this year, ultimately winning four for Best International Feature Film, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.
His other credits include the features All My Loving and Jack, as well as TV shows Your Honor, Patrick Melrose, and The Terror. He is currently in post-production on the British thriller Conclave, which will star Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini. Berger is also in pre-production on an Untitled Volkswagon Project, so it may be a little while before we get another update on the Bourne front, although hopefully, we'll hear about some writers relatively soon.
Matt Damon headlined four of the five films in the long-running Bourne franchise, kicking off with 2002's The Bourne Identity, which was followed by 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum. Jeremy Renner took over the reins briefly in 2012's The Bourne Legacy where he played a different character, but Damon eventually returned to the driver's seat for 2016's Jason Bourne.
The five films have grossed over $1.636 billion at the global box office, with The Bourne Ultimatum still holding its spot as the highest-grossing film in the franchise with a box office collection of $442.8 million globally.
