BOX OFFICE: THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Looks Set For Incredible $175 Million Debut

While Thor: The Dark World looks set to score an impressive opening of anywhere between $85 million - $100 million, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be November's biggest sequel with a predicted three day opening of $175 million; a number which would put it behind only The Avengers!

Back in 2012, no one imagined that The Hunger Games would end up grossing anywhere near as much as a whopping $691.2 million worldwide. For that matter, no one really expected it to be as good as it was either! Well, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate now have another hit on their hands as the sequel is tracking to have the second highest opening of all-time with around $175 million. Marvel's The Avengers holds the record with $207.4 million. A number like this could potentially give it the highest North American opening of 2013 after Iron Man 3 scored $174.1 million back in April. While Lionsgate are being slightly more conservative with predictions of between $140 million to $150 million, some observers even claim that The Hunger Games: Catching Fire could reach as high as $190 million in its first three days. Thankfully it comes out long enough after Thor: The Dark World to not put too much of a dent in that movies takings!

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

The fact that it's not released in 3D is what makes this an outstanding performance...

I bet this one will be better. Love that they used IMAX, especially in the Arena (or only there but whatever) hope they use them once more on the last two films!!!

The first film was OK. Got a bit shit by the end with the love triangle. Can't imagine why so many people would be so excited for a sequel though.

Wow, I knew it would surpass the first one internationally, but now it looks like it will beat in domestically as well.

Never watched the first one, and don't plan on watching this one either. But damn, that's more than Iron Man 3.

I still have no friggin idea how the hell these are so popular. The first one was average at best, though personally I thought it was absolute shit.

Are all the 8-16 yr olds in the world going to see it? That might explain how it cam make so much money ...

Woah woah No way it makes that much. I will be AMAZED! but you never know. My bet is it won't, its worldwide gross was weak last time. Almost all of its cash came in america. But who knows. My bet it it will out do thor by about 300 million.

Thor TDW: 450 million overseas, 250 in America
Catching Fire: 550 Million in america. 450 over seas.

GinjaNinja - 11/1/2013, 6:48 AM
This one will be a really good movie, next two will suck unless they completely throw the books aside because dang that was a boring last book.
Gamera623
Gamera623 - 11/1/2013, 7:01 AM
The books were excellent.

The movie was just ....OK.
I'll even be kind enough to say good.

But just like Harry Potter, people are so hung up on loving the books that they are blind to the fact that the movie adaptaions are mediocre at best.

MARVEL films are overrated.

Just because they make more films than DC doesn't mean they made/make great films.

Actually not very surprising, a lot of kids love this book. Aswell as adults. It's a lesser version of Harry potter but that's not saying much

GinjaNinja
GinjaNinja - 11/1/2013, 7:33 AM
@Richardboldly well your statmenet is true that it doesn't mean they make better films. But due to the fact that their film quality is largly better than all the DC films except tdk and MAYBE batman begins...
MatTaylorX
MatTaylorX - 11/1/2013, 7:42 AM
What does this have to with MARVEL or DC? Do you nerds have to turn everything in to a flame war?
ParisSun

Not a surprise, my wife loves this movie. She's not even a big movie goer but has been waiting to see this. I'm sure little girls, moms, girlfriends and tag along male companions are going to make this movie huge.

The movie is ok, not great by any stretch. At times it takes itself too seriously.

Enphlieuwince - 11/1/2013, 7:59 AM
Yeah, I enjoyed Harrelson's character and all but there wasn't enough to hold my interest. I've tried watching this movies SEVERAL different times and I could never stay "tuned in" to finish it. I really don't know what it is because I thought the premise was pretty good...
GinjaNinja
GinjaNinja - 11/1/2013, 8:05 AM
Loved the movie, but it did next to nothing overseas, if that doesn't change it won't get that big an opening.
