Deadline is reporting that Starz has enlisted 2x Academy Award-winner Mel Gibson (Lethal Weapon; Braveheart) to star in The Continental, the upcoming three-part event series that will serve as a prequel to Lionsgate's John Wick film franchise starring Keanu Reeves in the title role.

While a young Winston Scott will be the show's lead, Gibson will feature prominently as a character named Cormac.

"The Continental will explore the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins, which increasingly has become the centerpiece of the John Wick universe. This will be accomplished through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals."

With casting now underway, it's only a matter of time before we learn who will be stepping into the shoes of Winston, played brilliantly in the films by Ian McShane, and whether or not more familiar characters could be popping in.

The show remains a relative mystery, but when we recently caught up with John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, he teased big things for the show and major developments that will hopefully only enhance what fans already love about the acclaimed action franchise.

Meanwhile, John Wick: Chapter 4 is tentatively scheduled to open in theaters on May 27, 2022; which is also the opening date of Tom Cruise's long-awaited Top Gun: Maverick, so it seems likely one - presumably the former - will end up moving.

What is a three-part event series? Something like the Fear Street trilogy? I like the format, but as of right now a season of tv sounds like it would fit better

Well that's ballsy. Hope he's not drinking. Seriously, I used to love Mel Gibson, as did just about every one else for decades. People forget that Gibson used to be beloved. He sure hasn't made it easy to do that for awhile. Hope the performance is good. Mel used to exude goofiness and good will. Anybody remember that? Hard to believe now. Every part he's done for some time just comes across as a seething hot head who is about to blow. Hoping for the best.

@IronGland - Lol full of yourself much? He said some stuff years ago & that doesn’t even break the top 10 of crazy going on these days. You & people like you need to get over it & idk.. be tolerant lmao.

@IronGland - He plays Santa Claus in his latest, "Fatman". Some rich, spoiled kid who was bad boy and didn't get what he wanted for Christmas hires a hitman (Walton Goggins) to take him out as revenge.

@Jager87 - Your last bit there contradicts the entirety of your sentiment.

@Jager87 - Are you his kid? Calm down precious. Point out anywhere in my post where I tried to cancel him. In the post I literally said that I love Mel Gibson and wished him the best. Who's not being tolerant?

@IronGland - Sure. You said you love him & a lot of other garbage like “hope he’s not drinking” really?! You try to throw being tolerant in my face like you did something there, when you just sound like a condescending doorknob. Thanks I am precious.

Mel is one of the best actors and I can only imagine he'll do a phenomenal job in this tv movie series.

Was hoping he would be the lead. I love the ''old man kicking ass Wick style'' movies.
