FURIOSA Director George Miller Addresses Tom Hardy And Charlize Theron's MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Clashes

2015's Mad Max: Fury Road was a chaotic production, not least because its two stars couldn't stand each other. Now, filmmaker George Miller has addressed Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron's bitter feud...

It's no secret that Venom's Tom Hardy and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Charlize Theron clashed on the set of 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. However, there have long been conflicting reports about exactly why the actors struggled to get along.

Hardy's method approach to playing Max Rockatansky may have been one point of contention, as was his frequent lateness to set. That resulted in a heated confrontation which saw Theron call her co-star a "f***ing c***" before he squared up to her; the consequence of that was the Oscar-winner demanding she have a female producer on hand at all times.

They've both since acknowledged their respective failings, with Hardy admitting he could and should have done more to foster a healthier working relationship with his co-star.

It wasn't an easy process making the movie, anyway, and only time will tell whether any similar issues occurred on the set of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (which, from what we can tell, had a much smoother production).

Talking to The Telegraph (via SFFGazette.com) about the prequel, Miller reflected on the clashes between Hardy and Theron while making Fury Road.

"They were just two very different performers," the filmmaker recalls. "Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer."

"Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined - a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance - and always the first one on set."

Theron's aversion to dust was also a problem, prompting Miller to assure her that cleansing wipes would be on hand when needed. "But she said, 'No, I'm telling you because I can use it,'" he explains. "And then every morning after getting into her costume and make-up, she’d come outside and roll around in the dirt."

"I’m an optimist, so I saw their behaviour as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to co-operate in order to ensure mutual survival." Even so, he adds, "There’s no excuse for it, and I think there’s a tendency in this business to use great performances as an excuse for other disruption that could be avoided."

Neither Theron nor Hardy reprise their respective roles in Furiosa, with Anya Taylor-Joy stepping in to play the title character. As for whether Max makes an appearance, you can find details on that here.

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga arrives in theaters in North America on May 24 and internationally beginning on May 22.

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Charlize Theron" is she really the STAR? Is there no other movie she could be attached to - maybe one where she had more than 30 seconds of screen time?

I'd love to clash with Charlize Theron. . . if you knows what I mean. . .

Strange to hear how Hardy was the Diva here.

I wonder if these tendencies is why he's hamming it up these days in movies like Venom these days.

Anyway I'd like to see a proper sequel to Fury Road.

@UniqNo - Well, Sir Patrick Stewart said pretty much the same thing referring to the time they shot Star Trek: Nemesis.

There's a great episode of the "What went wrong" podcast where they cover this. Basically Tom Hardy was an unprofessional dick, in Charlize Theron didn't put up with it. Hardy later apologized And it seems like the cool now

Hardy is good in certain roles, but Theron is stellar in all of her roles.
I like Tom, but there is no series or movie that i remember him to be amazing in.

@MarvelZombie616 - Dude just goes full method I guess. I remember similar comments, although not necessarily derogatory, from Ryan regarding Wesley and the Blade 3 shoot. That said, yeah, I would say the same in terms of him being amazing. Mesmerizing might be a better word for some roles like Shinzon. I was surpised, also by how much he resembled a young Stewart.

Oh yeah their beef is the stuff of legend. I suppose it happens all the time where two big egos clash on set. Reminds me of The rock and vin diesel or Tommy Lee jones and Oliver Stone. I read somewhere that Rock and Ryan Reynolds clashed on the set of red notice. Apparently it was so serious both men didn’t speak to each other for months. Something to do with the Rock constantly being late for shooting. This seems to be the case where one actor is deliberately late for a shoot, delaying proceedings,
Inconveniencing the whole cast and crew, pissing off their costars to the point where it gets personal. The irony is we have all experienced this under normal working conditions and jobs. There’s always someone who is incredibly difficult to work with, who makes everyone’s lives a living hell.

To me , it just seems like both were different kinds of performers that had their own process or even people really hence probably why they haven’t worked together since.

It does seem like a bit of a miracle then given that and the difficult circumstances of the shoot that the film turned out as good as it did imo so kudos to Miller & co for pulling it together well!!.

@TheVisionary25 - wow. Mad Max before Thunderdome. I get that it’s the origin of Max, but I found the production of thunderdome so much better. Mad Max was just too “B Movie“.

Theron is a class act, and with Furiosa gave us one of the greatest movie icons of this generation. Anya’s got a lot to live up to but if anybody might have a smidge of a chance, it’s probably her.

We’re looking at the second and likely only other movie of the year contender here guys, next to Dune. We’re fortunate to of gotten both movies in a single year.

@FireandBlood - obviously this may appear a bit cheek having not seen ‘Furiosa’ (and obviously, never underestimate Miller) but Dune II is going to be very, VERY difficult to beat
FireandBlood

@SauronthePower - Near impossible to beat, but if there’s any movie that has the slightest chance, it’s this one and this one only.

I would not want to get on the wrong side of either one of them tbh. They're both pretty hardcore.

He's a Virgo and she's a Leo. These two star signs get along well and form great relationships, but when they clash it can be bad AF. Neither will back down.
That's Tom and Charlize's horoscope reading for today.

I guess George Miller just could get these stars in alignment.

I do feel like nobody would act like this on Nolan’s set. That man just has an air of professionalism to him that I feel no star wants to try undermine.

"...damage to him..."?

This will be my excuse for any anti-social behavior from me from now on. "I'm damaged!" <---sarcasm

Needing coaxing to come out of his trailer?! What a prima donna! It's his professional duty to show up on time WITHOUT coaxing.

All the more reason, why Charlize deserved to star in a spin-off/sequel.🤣 But for this prequel, it looks like Anya Taylor-Joy crushed it.

Didn’t know Hardy was this much of a Diva damn

Charlize comes off as so professional and cool in everything I see her in 🫶

I wonder what issues Hardy has.

I mean he’s a renowned actor, many box office hits under his belt and is pretty attractive

I guess that’s it 😂

I read an interview or two with Theron recently. She seems a class act and it sounded as though she and Hardy made up by the end of the shoot. Long shoot, hot all the time and as I recall she owned her own part in the beef, not putting it all on Hardy. He gave her some kind of memento at the end, also. I think it was a painting with an apology as well.
