Chris McQuarrie Has Been Asked By Tom Cruise To Direct MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7, But He's Still Undecided

After the critical and commercial success of both Rogue Nation and Fallout, it would be almost a no-brainer for Chris McQuarrie to return for a potential MI7, but it sounds like he has his reservations.

Tom Cruise's latest critically-acclaimed action blockbuster, Mission: Impossible - Fallouthas been absolutely dominating the worldwide box office for the past two weeks, earning well over $329.8 million ($124.8M domestic; $205M foreign) since its theatrical debut on July 27. It's now on course to become the highest-grossing film in the entire Mission: Impossible franchise.

Considering the incredible critical and commercial reception from all across the globe, it's only a matter of time before Paramount gives the go-ahead for Mission: Impossible 7 and while Mr. Cruise will undoubtedly return as the IMF ace Ethan Hunt, it remains to be seen whether he'll be joined by director Christopher McQuarrie, who's helmed and written the previous two chapters in Hunt's journey.

Speaking on the first half of Empire's spoiler podcast for Mission: Impossible - Fallout, McQuarrie reveals that he's already been approached by both Cruise and Paramount to direct a potential seventh installment, but he has his reservations after the incredible reception for Fallout. He explains (via Collider's transcription), “[Fallout editor] Eddie Hamilton, every day in the editing room was like, ‘Come on, man, it’s obviously a trilogy you’re coming back, you have to finish it, you didn’t kill Lane,’ and I was like, ‘It’s somebody else’s problem.’ Tom has asked, the studio has asked, and I was like, ‘You know maybe I’ve got an idea for…’ and then the reviews came out and I was like, ‘Get outta here. Just stop.’ I felt so bad for the director of Mission 6 and I feel even worse of the director of 7. I’d rather have leprosy than be in the position of the person having to confront the pressure of the hyperbole of this movie on their first day of shooting the film. It’s too much to confront. I’d need a long nap before I could contemplate it.

Following up both Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and Fallout is no easy task, so it's understandable if McQuarrie has his reservations and wants to step away from the director's chair on top of his game, although it's hard to imagine he won't be involved in some capacity, at least when it comes to developing the screenplay.

While we can hold out hope that he'll ultimately change his mind, he later adds that making a Mission film is not exactly a walk in the park and the last two were especially difficult since they began production without a finished script, so it may be a while before we get any updates on the MI7 director. “The worst part is they’re like you don’t need a script, you don’t need to prep—you’ve done it twice!”

The last part of that big quote doesn't make any sense, Collider must have messed up. Because if that's McQ talking about feeling bad for the director of Fallout... you get what I mean.

I would though be fully behind McQ coming back for MI7. He's got plenty of time to think it over, given that we have been getting a new MI film every 3 or 4 years.

But if he were to return, McQ would have the proud distinction of directing the greatest action trilogy of all time, and one of the greatest film trilogies ever made.

I'm sure he wants to stretch his legs for a bit and try some other shit. But, I can't imagine anyone else doing these films now.

@BlackBeltJones - exactly but i also feel like he doesn't want to be the director who's involved with tom dying on set....... because his stunts are getting up there .....

Well he’s not going to be busy directing a Star Wars movie so I’m sure he’ll sign on eventually.

@TheUnworthyThor - and he won't be directing a DC film either...

@HeavyMetal4Life -

"I've never really thought about it," he replied. "I feel like if the story was right and the character was right - I love working with Henry, Henry's great." When pressed on the topic of whether or not he'd be interested in directing Man of Steel 2, McQuarrie replied, "If Henry asked me to, sure, why not?"

@NOVAtheSUPA - is this before or after his tweet about how disgusted he was with toxic fandom and how it had turned him away from Star Wars and DC films??? Smh, better luck next time kid.

@HeavyMetal4Life -

"To me, I'm interested in a good story. That's really what it is. I mean, when Man of Steel came up, it was because somebody had asked me, did I want to work with Henry again? Which I would in a second. I go through the door that opens"

This is from july 24th so after that toxic comment

Get rekt kid

HeavyMetal4Life - 8/6/2018, 3:55 PM
@NOVAtheSUPA - so you equate him politely answering the question and not ruling anything out as him disregarding his earlier strong denial about probably not doing a MOS film? And you equate him to saying he would like to work with Cavill again as him saying he would do MOS2? Because obviously Cavill only does Mission Impossible or DC films, right? And you equate him shooting the shit with people about story ideas for films that he may or may not do (Mel Gibson is a great example of someone who does this) as him saying he would do MOS2??

Yeah, eat your own words. Get rekt kid. And do yourself a favor and stop replying to me. Whatever personal vendetta you are on against me, whatever fantasy you have of making me look bad blows up in your face EVERY. DAMN. TIME. All I do is take your noise and throw it harder back at you. Get over yourself kid.

@NOVAtheSUPA - I don't see any comment. And stop messaging me, for the last time. I've politely asked you to stop several times now. I never comment first on a post you make, you always find ones that I make. All you're doing anymore is trolling me and that stuff gets old fast. That's great that you don't agree with what I say, I definitely don't agree with what you post. If you're looking for a fight (you clearly are), find someone else. If you refrain from replying to this message then I know that you will stop trolling me.

Liked his films, but kind of miss the whole different director for each film, with a different style thing that they did for the first 5
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 8/6/2018, 2:30 PM
@dracula - while he did direct both Rogue Nation and Fallout, he made sure to give Fallout a different feel than RN. Which is why we got a very character driven, dark film.

Bring in Chris Nolan or Michael Mann
ArtFreak
ArtFreak - 8/6/2018, 6:28 PM
@Frshcoupe - Mann could definitely use a guaranteed hit and we know they have a working relationship. The style would be out of control and return the franchise to the distinctive different director per film feel, regardless of how great FALLOUT is. I love this idea! Nolan would never do it. And shouldn’t.

I'd rather someone else tackle it. One of the highlights of the series for me is that each movie feels very different characteristically, but Fallout felt very much like Rogue Nation (naturally). Would rather a more vibrant vibe for the next one. Fallout added more humor, but I wouldn't say it always landed too great.

I have a feeling that this is a --Daniel Craig "I'd rather slash my wrists than do another Bond"-- type of scenario where he's been asked if he'd like to do another straight after finishing the current one.

Give him time to decompress from this one and I'm sure he'd be willing to come back. Personally, Rogue Nation and Fallout have been my favorite of the series so far so I'd like to see him come back for another.

The Mission films should be like Bond where the director changes for each one. Just like Sam Mendes, McQuarrie was lucky to break the rules, but I think it should be a one time thing.

I just saw Fallout yesterday & I gotta be honest I don't get the hype for it. It was okay, but nowhere near my favourite of the MI movies. The story line was pretty weak & basic, the movie was just one action piece after another with no real dialogue. I love the action set pieces, but after a car chase goes over a min it just gets boring to watch. Basically they had a massive story dump at the beginning with the mission tape so that for the rest of the movie none of the films characters really needed to speak again. It just felt like Tom said, okay I want to do a big bathroom fight, a chase on a motorbike, a halo jump and fly a helicopter, lets film that and you just edit them together. If you have seen the trailers then you have seen the film. Oh and it is 100% bullshit that Tom, or anyone, had to do a real halo jump for this film. He said if someone else did it or they did it in cg it would look fake. First of all, they could of done a normal sky jump dressed in Halo gear & it would have looked the same, second they filmed the jump in clear sky daylight, but in the film they turned it into night & through a storm using cg, which made it look fake anyway. They actually wasted a tone of money on the halo jumps they didn't need to do. Again, for me the film was kind of ho-hum, it had it's fun moments, the bathroom fight was great, but if you are coming for any kind of story, or character construction for Henry Cavil forget it. I am happy for this to be Tom's movie & he is the lead, but if you are going to give him a team on a mission, maybe give them something more to do and some dialogue, & don't put in characters when they have zero to do and don't add to the story. There was no need for Rebecca Ferguson's character to be in this movie at all. One last thing, MI 1 3 4 5 They think Hunt is the bad guy & he has to go rogue, someone in the government thinks MIF is pointless & should be shut down but changes their mind at the end when they are proven wrong when Hunt saves the world.......You have now seen MI 6.

One thing I like about the Mission Impossible movies are the different directorial visions. I've liked Rogue Nation and really liked Fallout, but I'd like see someone new sit in the director chair for the next one. Let's see what they can bring to the table.

He needs time, I follow him on Twitter and around last week he said he was going to take some vacations after completing the movie and feeling good about the success.

They always choose either way a good director so I am not worried. Let him rest and if we cross enough fingers he will sign up again. =)
