Christopher McQuarrie Talks MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Sequels: "How Do You Fall From The Moon?"

Tom Cruise & Chris McQuarrie shocked us all when they announced not one, but TWO Mission: Impossible sequels, and while they may still be in the scripting stages, McQ recently shared a cool update.

Tom Cruise's critically-acclaimed Mission: Impossible - Fallout  was considered one of the best, if not the best film of 2018, and it helped propel the franchise into a whole new stratosphere with a phenomenal $791.1 million worldwide total ($220.1M domestic; $570.9M foreign) - a new high for both Cruise and his flagship action franchise.

Shortly after the film made its debut on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray last December, Paramount Pictures officially announced a pair of sequels, tentatively titled Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8, with Cruise reprising his now-legendary role as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt and McQuarrie returning to the director's chair for his fourth Mission.

While plot details remain scarce, McQuarrie did recently sit down with Empire Magazine for their Empire 30 celebration issue, and revealed that his initial pitch to the studio was always for two films. This seems to confirm that this could be an Infinity War/Endgame-type situation, as themovies will likely be constructed to be watched independently of one another, but will also tell one overarching story: “I pitched the idea of making two movies, and now I have to justify why it’s two movies. You’ve got to earn that. You’ve got to make something that swallows the last three movies whole. I’m freaked out now. We’ve talked ourselves into something. Holy shit.” Holy shit, indeed.

The director also touches on one of the more popular fan theories, which is, of course, the prospect of Tom Cruise possibly going to space or the moon in a future sequel. While he doesn't outright debunk the fun fan demand, his response does seem to indicate that the moon may not be in the cards for Ethan Hunt. “Here’s the problem with going to the moon: how do you fall from the moon?

Mission: Impossible 7 will light the fuse in theaters on July 23, 2021 while Mission: Impossible 8 will be released the following summer on August 5, 2022.
