MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7/8 Director On What That DEAD RECKONING Title Might Mean For Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt

While the focus of the latest issue of Empire Magazine has mainly been on Indiana Jones 5, it also includes an interesting nugget about arguably the biggest action movie of next year, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Speaking with the magazine, director Christopher McQuarrie elaborated on that intriguing subtitle and what it could mean for Tom Cruise's act IMF agent Ethan Hunt. He teases,

There are many things emerging from Ethan’s past. ‘Dead reckoning’ is a navigational term. It means you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters.

Thanks to multiple crypic messages from McQ, it's been heavily expected that the two-parter - and rumored franchise conclusion - would delve deep into Ethan's mysterious past, but it remains to be seen exactly where Cruise and McQ plan to take our hero. Regardless, one thing we do know is that these next two films are going to be bigger than anything we've seen before.

The first thing we knew was that if it’s gonna be a big two-part adventure, it’s got to be epic. It’s going to have to be the installment that swallows the rest of the franchise whole. There’s just not another way to do it.”

In addition to Cruise as the headliner, the highly anticipated McQ-directed action blockbuster will also see the return of Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Academy Award-nominee Vanessa Kirby as the White Widow, Frederick Schmidt as Zola, and Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge.

Newcomers to the franchise include Hayley Atwell (Avengers: EndgameCaptain America: The First Avenger) as Grace, Shea Whigham (Perry Mason; Marvel's Agent Carter), Pom Klementieff (Avengers: Endgame; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Esai Morales (TitansLa Bamba), Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2Hobbs & Shaw), Cary Elwes (The Princess BrideSaw), Indira Varma (Game of ThronesCarnival Row), Mark Gatiss (The FatherThe Favourite), Charles Parnell (Top Gun: MaverickTransformers: Age of Extinction), Greg Tarzan Davis (Top Gun: MaverickGrey's Anatomy), Mariela Garriga (NCIS; NCIS: Los Angeles), Marcin Dorociński (The Queen's GambitVikings: Valhalla), and Lampros Kalfuntzos (No Time to Die; Ted Lasso).

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One lights the fuse in theaters on July 14, 2023; with the expected franchise finale, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two, set to arrive the following year on June 28, 2024.

Mission Impossible > James Bond.

Can’t wait for these. This franchise (besides the sub-par 2nd one) is so great.

With all the tragic losses this past month, that headline got my heart racing for a second.

Dead reckoning is the process of determining the current location of a moving object by way of calculating points where it was. So he's either chasing something and always one step behind (Until the climax), trying to find some plane/boat that was lost, or Mephisto because it could always be Mephisto.

Or it could just be a neat sounding phrase and have nothing to do with anything.

The last three or four Mission Impossible movies have been fantastic.

This could be my most anticipated movie of 2023.

Can't think of anything that I could be more excited for maybe John Wick Chapter 4.

Not too late to drop the Part 1/2 and go back to standalone (sub)titles as initially considered. “Part 1“ would have head a distinguished title

It would be nice to see Ethan survive and actually have a life. He could come back in 15 years in a role closer to Phelps.

@micvalpro - I agree. I'm honestly sick of the "the main character dies" cliche in every final entry of franchises. It's such a tired trope.

How many of you are more worried about Ilsa than you are Ethan?

Legendary franchise.

Crazy that Tom is still arguably the biggest movie star today, when the man started 4 decades ago

As a kid watching Tom Cruise in movies like The Outsiders, Taps, Legend and Risky Business I’d never imagine that as an adult I’d be still watching him as an action star dominating the box office. Can’t wait for more.
