RAMBO: LAST BLOOD Review - Sylvester Stallone Returns For A Gruesome, Aggressively Stupid Sequel

Sylvester Stallone returns as Rambo this weekend in what's being billed as the final entry in the franchise. Most critics have not been kind, but are they being a bit harsh? Eh, no. Mild SPOILERS ahead...

Given the declining quality of its sequels, it can be easy to forget how good the original First Blood really is. A great action movie, sure, but it also had something to say about the Vietnam War and the treatment of its veterans, and Sylvester Stallone's PTSD-afflicted John Rambo was far more complex than the vengeance-fulled killing machine he'd later morph into.

Many fans were hoping Last Blood would return to the franchise's roots, but, unfortunately, it's probably the worst of the lot.

It's true that nobody goes into a Rambo movie expecting a clever, nuanced story, but is competence too much to ask? The script is so basic and cliched that, even at a lean 88 minutes, the film still feels like a slog.

If you've watched the trailer, you know the story. Mexican cartel kidnaps Rambo's niece (see what happens when you leave US soil young lady!) and he goes to save her, devising a brilliant, intricate plan to infiltrate enemy territory and bring his family home on the way.

Nah, not really. He actually just walks right up to the head honcho - who is protected by an army - and asks him to let her go, getting himself beaten half to death and making his nieces's situation infinitely worse in the process. These movies were never what you'd call clever, but was Rambo himself always this dumb?

To be fair, Stallone does deliver a pretty good performance, and if it's action you're after you will not be disappointed on that front. This movie is violent. Like, slasher movie-level blood and gore. Dismemberments, decapitations, disembowelments, immolations - you name it, ol' Johnny Rambo inflicts it. The unrelenting brutality does start to get tedious after a while, though, and even the most hardened gorehounds may find themselves losing interest.

If you're a die-hard fan of this franchise and all you care about is Rambo dispatching lots of people in the most gruesome ways possible then you'll probably get something out of Last Blood, but everyone else would do best to avoid. Stallone is always watchable, it's just a shame what will likely be his final Rambo movie failed to give the character a worthy sendoff.

@ChangAlang - Ad Astra is mostly boring, but I really like the scene with the ape and the chase scene with the moon vehicles, when I left the cinema I wished I would have watched Rambo... or Hobbs & Shaw

@IcemanX - The ape scene was the only bit I didn't like haha. Felt like a scene the studio forced through reshoots to add more action

I don’t come to a Rambo movie looking for cinematic poetry so who cares. Rambo killing bad guys is all the movie needs no plot required. All the critics hate the Rambo sequels anyway so this looks like it’s probably going to be another hit. Stallone knows what the fans want and he’s giving it. We don’t need another First Blood that was just simply a product of it’s time and a well done one that doesn’t need to be replicated again.

@regularmovieguy - I loved it. Had some really interesting things to say about masculinity and emotional repression in men that I wasn't expecting, and the visuals were incredible

Yeah, I really loved it too. Wish I saw it in IMAX but that screening wasn't until 10 pm.

A lot of scenes took me by surprise. It had some really tense scenes like the one on the moon and the mayday ship they stumbled on. Brad and TLJ were both great...Doanld Sutherland and Ruth Negga were good but didn't have too much to do.

One thing that I liked at times and didn't like during others...the narration. Sometimes I thought they totally could've left it out. Started wondering if they did that to streamline it a bit more.

Either way, really great movie. Don't think it's going to do well at the box office though. My screening probably had like 5 people in it.

@regularmovieguy - Narration was one of the only things that took me out... gave me Blade Runner theatrical cut flashbacks lmao.

@tmp3

Hoping we get a directors cut regardless...but I’m really happy with the way it turned out.

Big Stallone fan so I will be watching it, but yeah the Rambo movies have never been as strong as the Rocky movies, with the exception of First Blood now that was a legitimately great film

Haven't ALL of the Rambo movies (maybe barring the first one) been "aggressively stupid" anyway?

@Feralwookiee - The second one was pretty good too. After that, things really went downhill.

@Feralwookiee - The first one was a pretty good movie, but the main reason I like to watch it is because of the filming location. Beautiful scenery!

@tugboy - Oh, they're decently made and filmed, but the stories and political tones can be pretty cringey and dopey imo. I was just implying that these movies were never intended to be intellectual endeavors. 😜

It is a little depressing to me, how First Blood is a relatively realistic look at the pyschological fallout of a combat and war, esstentially and ANTI war movie, and the rest of the series devolves into brainless gung-ho pro-war mindlessness...the antithesis of what the first movie was truly about.

In unrelated news, based on this poster, looks like Black Lightning has a new costume for next season

looks good, less bulky and more color

Should be mentioned that this Rambo is fairing literally no worse in the RT % than all of its predecessors minus the original.

So...if you enjoyed parts 2-4, then the grade for this shouldn’t throw you. Sounds like it is your classic Rambo movie.

Sounds like the reviewer isn’t man enough for this kind of movie. 🤷‍♂️🤣🤣🤣😜

@AnthonyVonGeek - Movies can be masculine and good you know. Scorsese and Tarantino have some of the best filmographies in film history, and they made movies that are incredibly masculine, a lot of them more so than these Rambo films.
