300 Prequel TV Series May Be Heading To Netflix - With Zack Snyder Attached To Direct

Over two years after it was first mentioned as being in development, Zack Snyder's 300 prequel has seemingly taken a big step forward, and it's seemingly found a new home on Netflix.

In 2024, it was reported that a 300 TV series was in development, with Zack Snyder, who directed the 2006 movie, heavily involved. The project, described as a prequel, now appears to have taken a big step forward, albeit not at HBO Max.

According to The Hot Mic host John Rocha, Warner Bros. Television has partnered with Netflix on the show, with Snyder now on board to direct the pilot. The untitled 300 prequel has not been ordered to series yet, but a writers' room has been gathered, so it's beginning to take shape.

This doesn't mean the series will happen, of course, and even if a pilot is shot, Netflix may still decline to move forward with it. Snyder's movies are notoriously expensive, so that could be a factor in deciding whether it happens.

Talking of the Man of Steel and Rebel Moon filmmaker, Snyder is already attached to executive produce the 300 prequel, marking his first return to the world of comic books since 2021's Justice League Snyder Cut.

Deborah Snyder, who also executive produced 300, would return in the same role alongside Stone Quarry's Wesley Coller. Fellow 300 producers Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, and Bernie Goldmann have also been reported to be in discussions with the studio, though we don't know where things stand with them two years on.

The franchise, based on Frank Miller and Lynn Varley's graphic novel, includes two films: 300 and 2014's 300: Rise of an Empire.

300, directed by Zack Snyder, tells the story of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. It follows King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and his 300 Spartan warriors as they make a valiant stand against the massive Persian army led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro).

300: Rise of an Empire, directed by Noam Murro, serves as both a prequel and a parallel story to the original. It focuses on the Battle of Artemisium, where Athenian leader Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) leads the Greek navy against Persian forces, including the vengeful commander Artemisia (Eva Green).

We previously learned that Snyder was once developing a 300 sequel, Blood and Ashes, which revolved around Alexander the Great and his second-in-command, Hephaestion. That was described as part Greek war epic and part gay love story. Warner Bros. passed—around the same time Snyder left Justice League—and the rights have since returned to the director.

"We're just getting ready to dive in and get to work on it," Snyder previously said of his 300 return for this prequel. "It's super fun; I love the world. And even just in the preliminary meetings we've had talking about, like, 'What if this happened or that happened,' a lot of it's just really fun to, like, go, 'Wow, it's a rich standard' It's similar to this [Twilight of the Gods] in a weird way. As far as there are a lot of underpinnings."

Stay tuned for updates on the 300 prequel as we have them.
