SHERLOCK Set To Return For A Special Episode And Another Three Part Season

Fans had been hoping that the BBC drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman would return for another three episode season, but they've announced that it will be accompanied by a special too.

Sherlock, the hit BBC One drama produced by Hartswood Films, will return to screens for a Special, followed by a series of three new episodes. The last series saw Sherlock’s life change a lot - he returned from the dead, his best friend John Watson married Mary Morstan and he met his match in Charles Augustus Magnussen. After the briefest of exiles, Sherlock came back only to face one of his biggest mysteries yet. Why is Moriarty’s face being broadcast on every television in the land?

Speaking about the return of the series, co-creator, writer and executive producer Steven Moffat says: “A special, plus a new series of three episodes - it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect...”

Co-creator, writer and executive producer Mark Gatiss, adds: “Series Four! At last ! It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing... a Special! Not only THAT, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on - again!"

Sue Vertue, Executive Producer, Hartswood Films says: “It’s taken a little while to get the dates sorted as none of the boys are exactly sitting back twiddling their thumbs but there was unanimous goodwill to make this work, so we’re thrilled that 221b is going to be inhabited again.”

Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, says: “It’s a very good day in the life of a BBC One Controller when you can announce Sherlock will return for a special plus a new three-part series. Massive thanks to Sue Vertue and Hartswood Films for pulling this off, it's no mean feat pinning down some of this country's most brilliant and in-demand actors and writers."

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama, says: "Steven and Mark are ready to unleash the most shocking and surprising series of Sherlock yet. The only thing to expect is the unexpected..."

Sherlock is written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, and inspired by the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock is produced by Sue Vertue and the executive producers are Beryl Vertue, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat for Hartswood Films, Bethan Jones for BBC Cymru Wales and Rebecca Eaton for Masterpiece.

Shooting on the special will begin in January 2015, with the series shooting later next year.

Commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One and Ben Stephenson Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning.

So, some pretty exciting news here! Looking at what's said above, it seems like a fair assumption that the Sherlock special will air in 2015 and that the new series would follow in early 2016 as the latest run of episodes did. Those of you who watched them will know that there was a very surprising return at the end of season three that is sure to play a massive role in these new episodes as the BBC continues the story of their modern take on Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. Are you guys looking forward to Sherlock's return? Sound off with your thoughts below!

The last season was disappointing, imo.

The only massive disappointed I had with Series 3 was the wasted potential of Moran. He's a sharpshooter, second most deadly man in London (apparently) and Moriarty's subordinate... WHY in the hell would you make him a politician without any dialogue or motivation!?!?!

Other than that I really liked Series Three. I think the whole Moriarty thing will be handled much more smartly than a miraculous return from the dead so he can fight Sherlock again. Didn't the books imply Moriarty belonged to group or agency and that he had a brother? Hmmm.

I'm with you Greengo. First two seasons are great. 3rd was a mess. Here's hoping for a turnaround.

@Darlene

Because when it comes to the television industry, the UK has far less money and each episode is essentially the length of a film.

I know a ton of people thought series 3 was the weakest so far, but I thought it was fantastic. They had to juggle the enormous expectations after bringing Sherlock back from the dead, and I thought they handled that smartly by not giving a definitive answer. And rather than focusing on the mysteries, they focused on the characters, and what Sherlock's return really meant to everyone else.

I can totally see why that's not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it. I know it got a little "meta" and "fan-servicey", but Sherlock HAS become an international phenomenon, after all. It doesn't have series' anymore...it's become an event. It sucks that it takes so long to arrive, and then when it does it's over in 3 weeks, but I seriously can't wait! Easily one of the best shows on TV right now.

Drekk... Are they waking up naked in bed together, with white stains on the sheet?!? I mean we're all waiting for something like that, since the series begun, but noone would really be expecting it. ^^

Great news, but I don't care for Cumberbatch as Strange. He looks weird with facial hair.

The only bad aspect of this news is that we'll only be able see the new series an year and a half from now. That's A LOT to wait.

Glad there'll be more episodes though.

In Elementary you can tell within 5 minutes who the bad guy is and is essentially a bad guy of the week type show. Sherlock on the other hand is TV at its best - surprising, funny, well acted, deep characters and clever story arcs.

I do however like both versions of the Sherlock characters and Johny Lee Miller does well with what he's given.

Not a fan of season 3. Hopefully this will be a return to the perfection that was season 2.

@EzioKenway1225, I agree. I'd go so far to say that the wedding episode was probably my favorite of the entire 3rd series. I agree with Moffat and Gatiss' statement there, but I don't blame people for disliking it because the first 2 series really did play up the mystery aspect of the show, only to suddenly drop the focus on mysteries in series 3.

Magnussen was incredibly menacing as a villain, but I kind of wish he'd been more of a factor. He was teased throughout the entire series 3, and was finally introduced in the 3rd episode...and now he's obviously not going have any impact anymore. I was kind of hoping they were setting him up to be the next Moriarty, but I can't argue with that cliffhanger haha. I'm really excited to see where they take this next!

Episode 3 of season 3 was the only good one imo, the other 2 were lackluster

Season 2 episode 3 is still the best one, for me at least

is this the thread where everyone comes to say season three wasn't that good?

pfft, w/e i don't see how, but like i said w/e.

the question(s) everyone SHOULD be asking: "whats this special about? if every episode is the length of a made for tv movie, is this just behind the scenes BS, or is it like a 2.5 hour episode, or what?"
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 7/2/2014, 5:17 PM
@maynard3eye, Before the last season started, they released a special around Christmastime called "Many Happy Returns" and it was only about 5-8 minutes long. I'd assume that this new special will be somewhere along those lines as well.
