Sicario Day of the Soldado has arrived in Aussie cinemas and we went to check it out. We are both huge fans of Denis Villeneuve's Sicario so the bar was set quite high heading into the sequel. A few warning bells went off pre release. First no Villeneuve as he was filming Blade Runner 2049 in a similar time frame. Cool. Second, no Blunt. This was more forgivable as Emily Blunt's character had been run through the ringer in 2015's Sicario. These factors aside, the trailers looked stunning and had us intrigued.
Day of the Soldado still features Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro and both are still on fire here. Both characters are fleshed out more as they step further into the spotlight in Blunt's absence. Sollima directs the hell outta this movie and every scene is wonderfully framed and takes generous notes from its 2015 predecessor. the score and sound design in the film builds tension wonderfully and is savagely impactful when it counts most. On a whole the film is bold and beautiful and takes the series in an interesting direction. I went to see the film again and loved it even more on a second viewing as so many smaller details come into the light.
On a whole Sicario Day of the Soldado is an incredible follow up to what was a truly breathe taking film.
To celebrate the release of Sicario Day of the Soldado, we went ahead and designed a fun new game called MOVIE TITLE TENNIS. Movie Title Tennis is a game we had played privately but we found a way to visualize it and make it fun to watch. Basically we take a movie or topic of the moment (in this case Sicario Day of the Soldado) and theme the game around it. We take actors from the film, in this case we have Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin and race against a timer trying to name as many of the actors films from their respective filmography before the timer runs out. To make it more challenging we added a paddle (thus Movie Title Tennis) and we exchange the paddle as we name another film. The last person holding the paddle when the time runs out loses the game much like hot potato.
Come and check it out and play along at home.

RECASTS- This is where I take a new release movie and shift its release date by a decade or two and RECAST the movie with actors from that time.I also talk a bit about how I think the film would have looked and felt during that era and discuss who might have directed the movie and why.
5 THINGS STILL GREAT ABOUT- This is a new segment looking back at videos game of old and instead of reviewing them and pulling them apart for their dated graphics and game play, instead I look at what is STILL GREAT about the game.
