Some new TV spots for The Matrix Resurrections have been shared online, and they offer up some intriguing hints about the movie's plot.

There have been rumors that director Lana Wachowski would be taking a more meta approach to this fourth instalment, and the first promo certainly backs that up. It begins with Bugs (Jessica Henwick) repeating the line about deja vu being a glitch in The Matrix that only "happens when they change something." From there, we see shots from the original movies intercut with new characters in similar situations, implying that Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) will be somehow reliving the events of the first film.

The international promo may be even more telling, as towards the end we see our heroes seemingly watching footage of themselves in action on a screen. This could suggest that "The Matrix" exists as a movie in this latest version of the digital reality.

Plot details remain under wraps, so this is all pure speculation based on what little we do know so far. Check out the clips below and let us know what you think.

“The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first Matrix film… 20 years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it’s set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that’s required to see the truth is to free your mind"

Other franchise returnees include Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian, and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson. Also joining the cast will be Andrew Caldwell, Priyanka Chopra, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen Hollman, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Christina Ricci, Max Riemelt, and Brian J. Smith.

The Matrix Resurrections will be released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously on December 22.
