The lucky few who had the opportunity to visit the International Festival of Annecy Animation Film during this past week was able to catch a preview of the upcoming Asterix: The Land of the Gods (aka Astérix: Le Domaine des Dieux).  While a trailer hasn't been revealed for the Belgium comic adaptation of the same name just yet, a news clip was broadcast on M6 that features footage of Julius Caesar unveiling his plans to get rid of these indominable Gauls and a short interview with the two directors, Louis Clichy and Alexandre Astier.

Also on the  children show, Kid & Toi, there is a 4-minute making-of video with co-director Louis Clichy providing a tour of the studio and discussing the animation process.  The animation and VFX was produced by Mikros Image, Grid Animation and Dreamwall.

Julius Caesar unveils his latest plan to get rid of those indomitable Gauls once and for all. As his army has not been able to crush “the last pocket of resistance”, he decides to try a stealth invasion: civilization delivered to the village gates! He builds a new Rome-The Land of the Gods-around Asterix’s village, pressuring the Gauls to assimilate or vanish. Despite Asterix and Obelix’s plans to stop the construction work, the buildings quickly rise and the Roman citizens start to peacefully invade their surroundings, bringing chaos to Asterix’s village. Could this finally mean victory for Caesar?

Asterix: The Land of the Gods is set for theatrical release in France on November 26th, 2014 while a global release is tentatively scheduled in the first quater of 2015.

As a french man it's a bit weird to see this news here ^^ All I can is: if you like even a bit Asterix, this one is in the way to be great. Alexandre Astier is a great guy/director/actor. Even I, not a very fan of Asterix, is eagger to see this movie because of Astier.

@Fabius,

Vraiment, mon frere, mais...Asterix has been translated into almost every language on the planet, as you as a Frenchman (I am betting) probably well know. And while some of the finer nuances of the humor may be lost, many of the translations are quite good.

...that being said the knee jerk reaction to whine about a translation this early in the production of the film does come across as a bit lame. It will come, no doubt. There is money to be made.

About the videos in the article if you don't know French you don't loose much it's mostly TV promo crap.
I'm excited for the movie, Astier did some good stuff and I'd like to see if he can really deliver with this one.

Looks really cool.

@Fabius:
And even if you understand French you're going to miss a lot of the jokes as your mastery and inside knowledge differs. They've been translating Asterix for decades and they've built up their own lingo and jokes in other languages to replace the ones lost due to translation.

And you're closing the doors to a younger audience, meaning less cultural penetration for a French product. Is that your goal?

Never thought I'd hear this argument outside of an Anime forum...

Though I have to say its always weird seeing European books when leafing through the Previews.

Looks like Poo Poo and Wee Wee.

Eh, I dunno. Just wanted to say that. But whos the target audience? Adults who remember the strip, or kids who already have a number of more familiar properties to challenge their attention spans. Could be a gamble.
