SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY - Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, & The Tune Squad Are Back In New Character Posters

While we await an official trailer, Warner Bros. has released eight character posters from their upcoming live-action/animated sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy, featuring Bugs Bunny and the iconic Tune Squad as they partner up with a new basektball legend in current Los Angeles Lakers forward and 4x NBA Champion LeBron James (Trainwreck).

In addition to LeBron, the posters spotlight Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Lola Bunny, Tweety Bird, Taz, Road Runner, and Speedy Gonzalez and with their arrival, it's only a matter of time before we get a full-length trailer as the studio deployed a similar marketing strategy with Mortal Kombat earlier this year.

The plot will see James reunite the Tune Squad, after he and his son (Cedric Joe) are trapped in a virtual space by a rogue algorithm named Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle), and lead the hilarious, albeit undisclipined Looney Tunes against Al-G's digitized champions on the basketball court.

Malcolm D. Lee (Night School) is directing and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) is producing the upcoming sequel, which will star James in the lead role opposite Bugs Bunny, doing his best to fill the shoes of the legendary Michael Jordan, a.k.a. the greatest basketball player of all-time, who starred in the original 1996 classic.

The supporting cast will feature Academy Award-nominee Don Cheadle (Avengers: Endgame) as the main villain, Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery) as James' wife, and Ceyair J. Wright (American Skin) as James' eldest son. Basketball co-stars remain a mystery for now, but the cast is rumored to feature the likes of Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Chris Paul, Kyle Kuzma, Diana Taurasi, Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike, amongst several other NBA and WNBA stars.

There are also rumors that additional Warner Bros. characters, including Pennywise, Lord Voldemort, The Wicked Witch of the West, Agent Smith, The Mask, and The Joker, will also appear, but those murmurs remain unconfirmed for now.

Space Jam: A New Legacy will hop into theaters and HBO Max on July 16.

When basketball champion and global icon LeBron James and his young son Dom (Cedric Joe) – who dreams of being a video game developer – are trapped in a virtual space by a rogue algorithm named Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle), LeBron must get them home safe by leading Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the Al-G's digitized champions on the court.

@Crtdacct2say - But then what happens to HBO Max next year? When all of these big releases are finished?

I can't believe they are using Speedy Gonzalez! Wasn't he one of the main characters that people said was "offensive" and a "stereotype" back when classic Looney Tunes cartoons were basically getting black-balled?

@CorndogBurglar - For a bit yeah but he isn't so obscene as Pepe Le Pew is. Pepe Le Pew was always the depiction of sexual harassment and rape culture. And I totally understand why they don't want to keep giving that type of character a platform.

@CorndogBurglar - as a Mexican American I was stoked to see Speedy back! Taking him away was BS.

Sidenote: my dual band WiFi IDs are Speedy_Gonzales for 5ghz and Slowpoke_Rodriguez for 2ghz

@SonOfAGif - Oh I get that too. And to be fair, old Looney Tunes cartoons could be pretty bad at times. I remember one where Elmer Fudd is locked inside his house and Bugs Bunny was tormenting him so much that he ends up shooting himself in the head and committing suicide at the end.

They even showed him holding the gun up to his head while the camera panned away from him and you just hear the gunshot go off as the episode ends.

So I get it. I'm not sure I would have wanted my daughter watching that when she was younger.

But I also feel like the great LT cartoons FAR outweigh the offensive ones. Maybe just ban those? Road Runner, and pretty much every other character were all pretty good 99% of the time.

@CorndogBurglar - I'm mexican and I don't find Speedy offensive at all, they seriously need to stop listening to people from some races/cultures speaking on behalf of different races/cultures.

@MG0019 - That makes me happy to hear! I always wonder who these people are that decide things are offensive. Like Speedy. How many Mexicans actually complained that they were offended by him? But then people also want to complain about not having representation. But here you have beloved character like Speedy, who is always the hero in every cartoon he's in. Yet people still complained about him. Why? Because of his sombrero and accent? I just don't get it.

@CorndogBurglar - Because of his sombrero and accent?

Most of the time he was either stealing or crossing borders.

@Reeds2Much - Stealing ala Robin Hood tho, but yeah the crossing borders theme is getting really old, it the only thing I actually disliked about Coco.

@CorndogBurglar -

Replying to you cuz you seem to enjoy some good news on people letting off Speedy...

He's voiced by comedian Gabriel Iglesias in this film who has recently said in an interview that he sees Speedy as a win for the Latino community and that the traits SJWs are calling out on Speedy's character - like downing cerveza & siestas - are all things Latinos love to do! Lol..

It's a fun little tidbit in this whole debacle but because of this I haven't been too worried about Speedy's involvement.

SonOfAGif - 3/29/2021, 2:39 PM
@SKetCH - I think the problem with the whole SJW movement and calling out characters is that they get offended for some reason when a non-white character is written by a white person who uses stereotypes to portray said character. Yet as people have mentioned here, Speedy is loved by Latinos including myself. People need to cool down and stop trying to speak on behalf of various cultures to cancel a character who might be loved by that culture.
