THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE Star Chris Pratt Responds To Trolls By Teasing His Mario Voice

The Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Chris Pratt and Charlie Day have come under fire after being cast as Mario and Luigi, but they recently took the opportunity to poke fun at their online detractors...

When it was revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt had been tapped to voice Mario in Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the backlash was immediate and vocal. Fans of the hit Nintendo video game franchise simply couldn't imagine the Star-Lord actor playing the beloved plumber, but the trailers have somewhat proved his doubters wrong.

While the title character definitely sounds like Pratt, there's a flair there that means Mario sounds like, well, Mario. Joining him in the movie as Luigi is Charlie Day and, during a recent visit to Universal Studios Hollywood's Super Nintendo World, both actors seemed to poke fun at the trolls.

As you can see in the Instagram post below (via Toonado.com), Pratt adopts a Batman-like voice that he claims is what he'll sound like as Mario. Day's sneak peek, meanwhile, consists of him saying absolutely nothing.

Voices aside, The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks like it has the potential to be an absolute delight. Throw in the admittedly impressive, albeit slightly divisive, A-List voice cast and we're fully on board with this one.

A new trailer is expected to be released early next month, so you'll want to keep checking back here for that the second it drops as we have a feeling it will include some fun reveals...and probably more of Pratt and Day's voices!

From Nintendo and Illumination comes a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film also stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser, as Toad, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to be released in theaters on April 7, 2023.

@ObserverIO - Are you referencing the tweets that circulated awhile back? if so, those were confirmed to be fake.

@Ottsel - What tweets?
I'm referencing the criticisms of Chris Pratt playing an Italian stereotype and peoples concerns that he was gonna do an insulting parody accent.

It seems like he's probably not doing that, but then they do still have this poster:

"Lets-a-go!"
...seriously? In 2023?

What was the tweet thing about?

@ObserverIO - A year or so ago, there were reports of him dropping the "Hard r" in some tweets from years ago. It was all fake, made the rounds before it was disproven though

@Ottsel - Just did a quick google. Good thing they cleared all that up.

Love Chris Pratt, but super skeptical about his Mario voice...hopefully it's just not too bad that I can't just ignore it. Rest of the movie looks good so far.

@Super12 - I don't know how his voice will end up being, but I'm glad they didn't go full on Italian. That works in spurts in the games, but could have been a bit much in a movie.

Animated movies always have to have big time movie stars, obviously for marketing. But the how to train your dragon movies mostly didn't, at least they weren't big names, and those still made bank. Idk, his casting is dumb af. Maybe he's hiding a secret, or they did the adr over haha

@bobevanz - I don't understand the "for marketing purposes" because it's obvious to me that the days of the blockbuster movie star is dead. Guarantee more people are seeing this for Mario than Chris Pratt. It's only done so studios feel safe by having a big name attached.

I hope he keeps getting cast as more animated characters to see people having a meltdown.

This trend of hollywood trolling their audience and subverting expectations is getting very old. Just give people what they want. They did with Sonic and look how well that turned out.

@Matchesz - I think many creators conflate or confuse themselves between "subverting expectations" and "breaking promised". Having the character be different from the game isn't being predictable, it's breaking a promise. Audiences don't like adaptation promises being broken, they want the game brought to life with a compelling story.

@Matchesz - they gave people what they want movie is perfect so voice actors are not perfect sonic doesn’t have iconic voice that’s what made it work.,

Not everyone can sound exactly like characters in games scorpion Mario master chief kratos

@Matchesz - They changed Sonic’s look to be more accurate. Everything about this movie visually is already perfect.

@DudeGuy -

You’re on a website where grown ups are crying about almost every bit of information that gets published on it. Lol.

@MahN166A - Go check out the latest article. On the one hand, I despise everything about Disney remakes, but on the other, it's hilarious to see grown men throwing a tantrum over the little mermaid.
