Zoinks! HBO Max has given series orders to three new animated shows, and one of 'em will be an adult-focused Scooby-Doo prequel which puts the spotlight on everyone's favorite brainiac, Velma.

Mindy Kaling is set to executive produce and provide the voice of the popular character, who will finally get her due as the "unsung and underappreciated brains" of the iconic mystery-solving squad. Velma is described as "an original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America's most beloved mystery solvers."

Kaling's frequent collaborator Charlie Grandy (The Mindy Project, The Office, Four Weddings), 3 Arts' Howard Klein and Sam Register will join her as exec producers.

The streamer is also developing a "modern refresh" of the 2002-2003 series Clone High with original creators Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Bill Lawrence on board, and "an existential workplace comedy set five minutes in the future" called Fired On Mars starring SNL and The Suicide Squad's Pete Davidson.

"It is a tremendous privilege to build on the 100-year plus legacy of 'cartoons' at this company," HBO Max exec vp comedy and adult animation Suzanna Makkos said in a statement announcing the slate . "We can draw a straight line from our hundreds of childhood hours spent watching Bugs outwit Elmer to the current slate of adult animated projects we are building here at HBO Max and we think fans will agree. We are proud to introduce this distinctive group of series from a wide range of diverse creators that will form a first stop destination for animation lovers everywhere."

Why do we need an adult oriented Scooby-Doo? Why can't you just make another Scooby-Doo that's written with the idea that there are fans who are adults now instead of alienating the demographic that made it popular?

@Waddles - I know. She's super-underrated. Now I feel weird watching Freaks and Geeks, even though she was in her twenties then.
