DETECTIVE PIKACHU Director Reveals Why Ash Ketchum Isn't In The Movie; Teases "Good Spread" Of Pokemon

A lot of Pokemon fans are understandably upset about Ash not being part of the franchise's first live-action movie but director Rob Letterman has now offered an explanation for this unexpected change...

Ash Ketchum is essentially the face of the Pokemon franchise and so it makes sense that he would receive the spotlight in a live-action movie, right? Well, not according to Legendary because Justice Smith is going to be playing a newly created character called Tim Goodman who goes on a mission to find his father, something which results in him crossing paths with titular Pokemon, Detective Pikachu.

During a recent interview, director Rob Letterman attempted to explain the decision not to include Ash in proceedings, noting that he's already been the focus of so many animated features, it just made sense to use someone new and tell a different sort of story (which should probably be evident from the fact that Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds will be voicing this pretty weird new talking version of Pikachu).

"The Pokémon Company, they’ve already made many, many movies of Ash, and they came to Legendary with this idea of using a new character. So when I came on board, I was pitched this character of Detective Pikachu, and I fell in love with the story behind it. It’s a really great story. It was something with a lot of heart, and it was just very unique. And because there’s already been so much work done with Ash, for the first live-action movie I thought it was a really good idea to try something new with a new character but bake it into the universe of Pokémon. So it still follows all the rules, and we get to see a lot of our favourite things."

Letterman went on to say that while he has a soft spot for Generation I Pokemon, he intends to include a "good spread" from the 802 available to him and compared the special effects in the movie to those which have been used to bring Rocket Raccoon to life in Guardians of the Galaxy. That's definitely going to be interesting to see as will whether or not this movie can actually exceed expectations.

To do a live action Pokemon film, with the orginials would have been fricking awesome. Loved Pokemon as a kid and would have been much more excited going to see a film with them for nostalgia.

@Menks123 - With so many movies of Monsters and Dinosaurs, Legendary must launch a new Pokémon movie with Ash and Team Rocket.

Better answer “there’s more than one Pikachu and this one isn’t his.” There you go.

i've got to be honest, I'm excited for this. The director has given me a couple of good guilty pleasures, so hopefully he can delivers with something as weird as this film.

I have to admit, this is the one video game film adaptation I'm curious about so far. With the cast and crew attached, it could either be really good and fun or really bad and awkward. Even if it's bad, I'm hoping for it to be an enjoyable so-bad-it's-good kind of flick.

Nintendo does a lot of great things but they are so clueless when it comes to movies.

Well, surely it's not the best idea to put the guy who keeps on losing in every league on the big screen.

So is this gonna be like a noir film with Ryan Reynolds doing the "voice in his head" thing, while everyone else just hears "Pika Pi" type stuff?

I'm hoping so because I can't imagine hearing Ryan Reynolds voice coming out of Pikachu's mouth.

Ash also [frick]ing sucks and is the worst trainer so it's not a huge loss.

You know I wish they would have done an ash movie focusing on him and keeping more in terms with the original 150 pokemon

I get his logic but how many of those ash movies had Pikachu? The answer is all of them.

I really would have liked to see Pokemon yellow on the big screen

Let's just call this a test run for live-action Pokémon creatures so that they can be perfect for the Red story arc films.

They should have just adapted the original anime with elements of Pokemon Red/Blue and Stadium. Ash gets Pikachu from Prof. Oak, and he enters the tournament. He beats Misty and Brock, and they both join him on the adventure. They run into trouble from Team Rocket, and Ash's main rival Gary. The film could also have a subplot about every participant searching for the mysterious Mew. Have Ash win it with a huge battle with Mewtwo, and we're good to go. Everyone wins! Oh well...

could be pretty interesting...although alot of the pokemon designs would not work well in live action.

Pokemon SNAP was such a fun game! I would honestly pay to see a movie about a photographer being commissioned by Professor Oak to take pictures for the latest Poké-Dex update. A great way to have a TON of pokemon with very little story required

As a HUGE Pokemon fan (like ridiculous - I have my right forearm tattoo'd with Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Pikachu, Mewtwo and Mew, with plans on making it a full sleeve) I don't know if I want to see live action Pokemon. For me their appeal is in their stylized anime design. Seeing Pikachu with actual fur is a weird idea to me, photo-realistic details like skin and fire on a Charmander doesn't have the same appeal to me...

I'll still probably see this though, cause I'm a huge man-child and I gotta catch 'em all.
