While Detective Pikachu doesn't hit theaters until May, Warner Bros. and Legendary must be feeling quite bullish about their upcoming Pokémon universe launching point - which, rumor has it, has been testing exceedingly well - as The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the studios are already in the very early stages of development on a sequel.

The highly in-demand Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street; The Cloverfield Paradox) has been tapped to pen the script. He also recently contributed to the screenplays for Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog, Warner Bros.' Mortal Kombat reboot, and Warner Bros.' Supergirl standalone.

Further details regarding the plot are currently
unavailable, but expect Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool 2) to reprise his role as the voice of the titular detective and it seems likely that his human companion, played by Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), will also return in some capacity.

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim (Justice Smith) to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds): a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu features:
Director: Rob Letterman
Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu
Ikue Ōtani as Pikachu's normal voice ("Pika Pika")
Justice Smith as Tim Goodman
Kathryn Newton as Lucy Stevens
Ken Watanabe as Detective Yoshida

I get the impression the movie itself might be bad, but seeing "live action" anime characters like that might compel me to love it anyway

@knocturnalzen10 - I've heard Blade of the Immortal is very good, it's from Takashi Mike so I expect it to be true.

@knocturnalzen10 - It’s really more a video game adaptation. Not that they’ve historically been any better than anime ones

Unpopular opinion Digimon is better than Pokemon .

Honestly i doubted this as it seemed like a flawed way to start this universe. But now that its shown that this will just use the basic concept of the game its named after and will instead be its own detective story in this universe, i think it'll do well.

I really don't dig how the pokemon look live action and Ryan. Reynolds sound weird as Pikachu. I'm not in a rush to see this at all. I'll see it when I see it

Had this movie come out when I was 10, I would have been ecstatic.. and remarkably.. perhaps because of nostalgia.. I am quite excited for this

Especially if they end up making a Red and Blue adaptation like I read earlier

I too think Ryan Reynolds is all wrong for Pikachu. But I'm open to it.
