POKEMON Live-Action Movie Rumored To Be In The Works At Netflix Alongside Planned TV Series

It's already been confirmed that Netflix is developing a live-action Pokémon TV series, but a new report reveals that the streaming service is looking to release a movie to accompany it...

We recently learned that Netflix is developing a live-action Pokémon TV series, but The Illuminerdi is reporting that the streaming service is also working on a movie. Apparently, it will tie into the show, meaning that there are obviously big plans in place to create some sort of interconnected universe.

However, one very interesting note is that these projects will not be a continuation of the story we watched unfold in Detective Pikachu; instead, this TV show and movie will reboot the franchise.

That makes sense in some ways, especially as even the video game Detective Pikachu franchise is somewhat standalone in nature. It's also probably for the best that talking Pokémon don't become the norm, as that would be a huge departure from what this property is all about (longtime fans would arguably be vastly more interested in following the story of a Pokémon trainer).

Joe Henderson (Lucifer) is attached to write and executive produce the TV series, but there's no word on a creative team for this movie spinoff.

Detective Pikachu was a sizeable hit back in 2019, grossing $433.9 million at the worldwide box office. It's a surprise in some ways that the franchise is now heading to the small screen, but there's plenty of success to be found on Netflix, especially as moviegoers continue to embrace streaming.

What do you hope to see from this Pokémon TV series and movie?

I always wanted a Pokémon TV series with another TV series to accompany it!

@CorndogBurglar -
Think he meant to write, that a Netflix is developing a film and not a series

They should go the MCU route and build up different characters from different regions in their own dedicated storylines, let them meet each other here and there, and then have a big crossover event in the form of a tournament arc.

...That's honestly my head canon, as I'm currently trying to get back into the franchise. XD

@Drace24 - I think of a mysterious benefactor (Giovanni) who organizes an expedition to unknown regions to find legendary Pokemon. Also, it would be great to see the creators of the Monarchverse working on both projects.

Talking Pokémon weren't even the norm in Detective Pikachu though; Mewtwo "spoke" via telepathy which is a common trait of that particular Pokémon in media adaptations, while when the titular Detective Pikachu talks it can only be understood by Tim due to some very specific circumstances.

You know what as long as it follows the style of Detective Pikachu I'll be happy.

As a long time pokemon fan (I remember watching the first movie in the cinema) I was really happy with what Detective Pikachu did, but would welcome a Netflix show centered on a trainer almost following the Red and Blue games.

I would like it, but I feel like the backlash for fighting animals would get people bent out of shape. I feel like detective pikachu got away with it was by making it an underground tournament. Hopefully they have the balls to just do it and not water it down
