While its domestic run may be all but over, Marvel's latest blockbuster, Ant-Man and the Wasp, just got a much-needed boost at the international box office with an exceptional $68 million opening weekend in China, the fourth-highest debut for a Marvel film ever in the Middle Kingdom.

The sequel's worldwide total now stands at approximately $544 million ($211.4M domestic; $332.6M foreign), which means it has officially passed the first installment's final cume of $519.3 million. It still has yet-to-open in Japan (August 31), so the numbers should continue to get higher as we head into the fall and a finish in the $600 million range doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility now.

As for the domestic box office, Warner Bros.' Crazy Rich Asians ($25M; $83.9M worldwide total), Warner Bros.' The Meg ($13M; $408.6M worldwide total), and STX's The Happytime Murders ($10M opening) finished one, two, and three, respectively.

Meanwhile, Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallout continues to hold strong and finished fourth in its fifth frame with $8 million. The critically-acclaimed Tom Cruise-led actioner has now earned over $538.7 million worldwide ($193.9M domestic; $344.8M foreign) and is well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing film in the long-running franchise. It opens in China this coming Friday, so expect its box office numbers to have gone up exponentially by this time next week.

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes Ant-Man and The Wasp, a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. As he struggles to rebalance his life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.

Every MCU hater a couple of weeks ago:

"Antman and the Wasp is a flop"

Everyone else with a basic understanding of how the box office works:

@TexasAvenger - It was, but only because Antman and the Wasp was actually Avengers 4 but you can't see it unless you have a special pair of glasses.

Finally saw it last weekend and my reaction was ...”meh”. It had no real villain and just wasn’t as stylistically interesting as the first probably bc it didn’t have the benefit of Edgar Wright’s script and test footage. Plus after the end credits scene where

SPOILER

the snap takes out all 3 Pyms including Janet I kinda felt like we’ll what was the point of this then bc now she’s not going to be in Avengers 4 and that was what establishing her in this was for. Hopefully the sequel goes back to the heist style of the first film and is more stylistically interesting and has a compelling villain (and maybe Cassie as Stature or Stinger)

@Ha1frican - I actually liked that it didn't have a "real villain" and had "opponents" instead. We don't see it that much in this genre. But maybe that's just me.

"every film doesnt get a china release date, heck they only let in about 30 foreign (not just hollywood but ALL non chinese countries) a year so.......more to the world of cinema than hollywood or the niche marvel studios. the film doesnt even have a release date in china and unless so lasst minute miracle happens without it cant match the first films box office let alone surpass it. lol whatever. any excuse to keep the marvel delusion alive i guess"
