Edgar Wright On ANT-MAN'S Villain

Director Edgar Wright references Iron Man (2008) when discussing the villain in Ant-Man..."the villain comes from the hero's technology. It's simple." Ant-Man experts, could this possibly be a clue to the identity of the film's villain?

Edgar Wright Ant-Man villain choice

Said The World's End director on selecting a villain for his upcoming Ant-Man movie and his decision to not use Ultron, "It was never in my script. Because even just to sort of set up what Ant-Man does is enough for one movie. It's why I think "Iron Man" is extremely successful because it keeps it really simple. You have one sort of -- the villain comes from the hero's technology. It's simple. So I think why that film really works and why, sometimes, superhero films fail -- or they have mixed results -- because they have to set up a hero and a villain at the same time. And that's really tough. And sometimes it's unbalanced."

Wright also adds that he's enjoying the fact that Ant-Man, while relatively popular, his back story isn't ingrained in the minds of the general populace. "I think there's something in that it's a lesser known character, there's hopefully more license," said the Scott Pilgrim director. He continued, "For the one percent of people who are like, "Wait, Hank Pym would never do that!" there's 99 percent going, "Who's Hank Pym?" So, to me, the source material is great but it also frees you up to be like: I'm going to make a movie. The movie is not going to represent 50 years of Marvel comics because that's impossible. But I'm going to make a 100 minute movie -- or 110 minutes [laughs]."

As we now know, Ultron will make his debut in Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron, leaving the Ant-Man film that follows without a clear, fan-favorite choice as far as a villain. It's not a stretch to say Ant-Man's rogues gallery is pretty weak after the android menace, with the likes of Egghead, Radioactive Man, Hijacker and the Scarlet Beetle rounding out a pretty obscure list of Marvel evildoers.

So, who is it? Ultron is really the only villain that would [frick]ing work in an Ant-Man movie cause his other villains suck so much ass.

Sigh. I really don't like the sound of this. I may not know many Ant-Man villains but that quote that its simple bugs (HA!) me. When it comes to CBMs, I care more for the villains than the heroes.

For example we've had 4 Spidey films. I'm more interested in Electro (like his backstory so far) than Spidey. I care more about Lex than Superman (maybe not Superman & Batman):

Simple villains suck. A villain should be complex.

I hope it will be not another Iron Man 3,please not a stupid comedy nonsense.

That's actually pretty smart. Edgar wright is trying to have the movie focus on On ant man. No one else. Although I would love for Ultron to be his villain, this is pretty smart.

I was never expecting Ultron to be in the Ant-Man movie but at least a mention or a prototype in the Ant-Man film to tease Ultron.... Ultron is too powerful for just Ant-Man to defeat by himself... Bets its going to Dr. Egghead as the villain

The first villain who springs to mind as a 'tech' based hero is the original Black Knight - Nathan Garrett.

Mind you I am sure there are plenty more choices.

Even if Ultron wasn't going to be in TA2, did people really think Ultron would be the villian in the Ant-Man movie??

Not...respecting...source...material...is a mistake. The character does have a rich and successful 50 year history for a reason. You can get a great script for the 99% while holding true for the 1% who might really enjoy it. This guy, in particular, should know the power of a cult following.

Who says that Edgar Wright used a villain specifically used in ant man comics. In the Marvel universe comics, we see villains all the time appear in different heroes comics. Why can't the same be in movies? Edgar could've used MODOK, Justin Hammer, KGB, AIM, the list goes on. Think outside the box. You don't have to use a villian from his rouge gallery only.

@MrCBM56: MODOK is a shit villain and would be a waste of film.

"Not...respecting...source...material...is a mistake

Pretty much every movie does it now. Plus, I've said this before, source of material should be looked upon for ideas, not full adaptions. People love to say how unoriginal movies are, how is Ant-Man creating Ultron anymore original than...lets say stark or the government or shield creating Ultron? Think about it.

@Donekin Wouldn't describe Ant-Man's history as "rich and successful" by any stretch of the imagination.

You also have "Whirlwind" and "Claw" as villans if I'm right!

I'm sorry but that comment is shit. MODOK is a very underrated and awesome villain. Yes, his appearance may be weird, but his philosophy, motivation, charecter motivation, is all wonderfully written and genius. Read a comic contains him instead of reading a wiki page about him. He's a genius charecter.

It sounds like Scott Lang is going to be the villain if he comes from the heroes own tech. either that or an original character.

I really think they should have left Ultron as his creation. At least leave Vision as his creation since he pretty much is.

I like the idea of Egghead as the bad guy. It's time there was a super-hero movie that embraced the ridiculousness of the concept. An anti-Nolan movie if you will, with plenty of comedy.

im imagineing AIM being the bad guys with MODOK and maybe even radioactive man involved, MODOK could be the big baddie with radioactie man being like cold blood in iron man 3 being the muscle. i just hope wasp is introduced i really want to see her in avengers 3 since she wont be in number 2.

Seems to me like a clear and obvious choice would be for Ant-Man to go up against a newly leaderless A.I.M.

such a bad decision by Marvel using Ultron before Antman movie.

But they dont care anymore about how they treat Avengers villains, so... I guess they will keep doing it in all next movies.

No surprise here, considering every first villain in all the Marvel movies have been extensions of the hero's origin tech, or brothers in the case of Thor.
