RUMOR: Front-Runner For ANT-MAN's Wasp Revealed?

According to questionable sources, a Parks and Recreation actress, who has starred opposite Ant-Man contender Paul Rudd, has surfaced as Marvel's "top pick" for Janet Van Dyne AKA The Wasp.

Since director Edgar Wright took to Twitter this month to announce his return to pre-production on Ant-Man, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd have been reported has front-runners for the title role. But now there's potential casting surrounding the supporting role of Janet Van Dyne, better known as The Wasp. According to questionable sources of Superhero Movie News, who were apparently informed of Paul Rudd's involvement early on, Parks and Recreation's Rashida Jones has topped Marvel's shortlist for Janet Van Dyne in light of her “chemistry with the other actors.” It's worth noting that Jones has starred opposite Paul Rudd in I, Love You Man and My Idiot Brother.

Also, Superhero Movie News further quote their source(s) on Edgar Wright's plans for The Wasp in the Ant-Man adaptation: “Janet would [only] be a love interest and a major supporting character, we would see multiple references to her future as The Wasp throughout the film.” Again, we don't know how reliable these sources are considering they don't exactly have a track record for breaking news, other than the Justice League: Mortal script. But what do you think?

Anyhow, Edgar Wright directs Ant-Man from his screenplay, co-written Joe Cornish. With filming scheduled to take place very soon in England, the film is slated for release on July 31, 2015.

I can see it. I call bullshit though. I'm don't think Ant-Man will have a lot of comedy but definitely plenty of it.

No. I don't think it was that. I'm sure id Marvel Studios made the decision to have Human Torch Black fans would root for it.

This is a pretty good choice too.

The fox FF4 movie is gonna suck regardless, doesn't matter if they were Black or Lebanese.

Anyways, this is a pretty good choice.

@batmaniac i dont think thats it at all...Wasp def isn't as iconic as the human torch is...or rather Marvel's First Family. Sadly, The FF (and the Storm siblings in particular) are just visually known for being blonde haired blue eyed white characters from the 60's...thats why their kind of irrelevant now. Hence probably why Fox is trying to update them now...but making them black just to update them feels a little gimmicky. They were marvels first superheroes of the silver age thats how memorable they are. THey could however make Pym, Lang, or Janet all black for all I care. Regardless of the color on any of these characters tho, they can still be awesome chars but on the FF it will just be harder for old head fans to watch it and feel like they are watching the characters they grew up with come to life on screen. Anyway i don't think its a huge deal..people will get over it. Still think slyFOX sucks tho.

Can anyone clear something up for me:
I thought Edgar Wright said that Pym would be featured in a sort of prologue in the 60s with Lang in the present.
So did I confuse what he said? They're looking at much young actors for Hank and Janet.

Not sure if I like this or if I even care honestly. I still think Morena Baccarin or Alyssa Milano would be a good Wasp.

If Rudd is cast as Ant-Man, then Jones I can see as Wasp! Will seem more like an Apatow movie than Wright though!

As far as I am concerned, the only option for this part is Odette Annable

Okay, I've completely forgiven Joss Whedon about the whole Age of Ultron thing. It was all Edgar's fault
I mean the guy is an unqualified legend, but he's taking his sweet damn time with this film, it should have been almost the first one out of the gate, before even Iron-Man, but now it has officially taken all the Ant-Man elements out of the Avengers mythology thus far and now we're not even gonna see Janet as The Wasp?
Y'know what? This film will undoubtably be a masterpiece but will not be the masterpiece that it should have been.
I suppose this confirms that it's a Hank Pym thing, then and not a Scott Lang thing. I mean to have Scott Lang become Ant-Man before Janet is Wasp would also be... ah fvck it, they might as well just keep fvcking shit up here, I think sticking to the source materail went out the window a while back.
Still, if it is just Hank Pym, then this means that the only real source material here will be the Tales to Astonish stuff. Most of which is collected in the Essential volume. It's worth checking out, if you like ridiculous '60s camp.
This also means that Hank will probably be a contemporary of the Avengers and as young as Paul Rudd is now (40s, I think).

DukeAcureds - 10/18/2013, 11:53 AM
As the only real source material left for this film is Tales to Astonish #27 and #s35-43, this also boils the list of potential villians down a bit.
Apart from the Russian spys trying to steal the Ant-Man technology, such as Comrade X and Madame X, there is as follows:
The Protector
(who has a pretty cool look and turned out to be a jewellry store guy in an Iron-Man-esque suit)

Egghead
("He's like a smart person")

The Scarlet Beetle
(Just a beetle who became more intelligent due to radiation)

The Hi-Jacker
(Who... hi-jacked an armored truck)

Kulla
(Who was from another dimension)

Jason Cragg
(The man with the voice of doom)

and the Mad Master of Time!
(cover says it all)

Is this the end of Ant-Man? Well, yes as far as Edgar is concerned it is. It seems that the rich, deep history of Ant-Man is far too much source material for Edgar to adapt. As such one of the main differences between the MCU and 616 is that there has been a distinct lack of Pym. It's kind've cool that Joss has called the Avengers sequel 'Age of Ultron'. Not only because it's a cool name, but it does sort of refer to a story that was about erasing the Pym/Ultron thing from the Avengers history. There was even a point when Logan inferred that he'd been back in time and tried numerous things including stopping Pym from even being born.

More on point, Rashida Jones is tasty and I don't think race matters to a character as much as nationality does. If she's an American, then she's an American.

DukeAcureds - 10/18/2013, 12:05 PM
I mean Wasp was an Asian-American in The Ultimates and it didn't change her character and it only came up twice in the script.
I think you could easily reshoot Casino Royale with the exact same script, but with Idris Elba as Bond, instead of Daniel Craig. You wouldn't have to change a thing.

Voiceofthevoiceless
Voiceofthevoiceless - 10/18/2013, 5:52 PM
NOMIS, this is 100 percent what I tell people

"I think the race of such long time establish characters such as Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, or in the case we're discussing Johnny storm.

It change the whole dynamic of the character itself."

Someone like Kingpin, it is okay as long as the actor makes it work, RIP MCD, did the role wonders and him being a different race didn't matter or change Kingpin's story. Now look at Electro, there was no big up roar.
The reason why is because, Electro is a cool villain but not to much background that it would reflect casting him in as a different race. Now if they made Electro have some kind of history that dealt with watching his parents as black panthers and he is a villain now because of it, yeah that would be wrong. Some heroes need to be portrayed as a certain race sometimes and some actors can not change themselves to much to make it work.

@Batmaniac
I don't think change for the sake of change is good, but if a black actor auditions for the role as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and nails the audition as opposed to the other white actors who auditioned, he should be able to get the part.

So by that rational if a morbidly obese actor nails the pathos of Bruce Wayne, then he should get the part? Why not? He nailed the Bruce Wayne part sure he looks nothing like Bruce Wayne but he's a great actor. In fact Peter Dinklage is a hell of an actor he should play Batman.

To say he shouldn't get the part, even if he can play it better than anybody else because he is black is wrong, especially when the color of a character like Bruce Wayne doesn't play a role in his story.

It's not always about race. As I've said before, if they cast a white actor as John Stewart or Static shock or Cloak or any other black character, I'd be pissed. Hell I think if Martian Manhunter ever gets on screen (Hah!) he should be played by a black actor in his John Jones Persona.

So don't paint people as racist just because they want their ICONIC characters the same race as they were originally created.

Unfortunately a lot of these characters were created in very unenlightened times, where in the U.S. human beings couldn't drink at the same water fountain as some slightly different human beings.

But Rashida Jones could pass for Janet, I'm more weirded out by the fact Pym beats the shit out of his wife and these guys are comedy actors.
