Joss Whedon Not Happy With Lack Of Female Superhero Movies; "There's Always An Excuse"

In an interview which took place before Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman were made official, Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon slams studios for the lack of female superhero movies, but admits that Fox have all the best non-male characters! Check it out.

Talking to Digital Spy on the set of Avengers: Age of Ultron last year, Joss Whedon didn't hold back when it came to sharing his thoughts on the lack of female led superhero movies. Thing have changed a little since then of course (thanks to Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman), but there are still only TWO on the way! "It's a phenomenon in the industry that we call 'stupid people'," Whedon told the site. "There is genuine, recalcitrant, intractable sexism, and old-fashioned quiet misogyny that goes on. You hear 'Oh, [female superheroes] don't work because of these two bad ones that were made eight years ago', there's always an excuse." That is obviously a reference to movies like Catwoman and Elektra, and the filmmaker makes a great point here.

Whedon wasn't afraid to take a shot at Marvel Studios either, making it clear that they should move ahead with a movie giving a female superhero the spotlight (which they are now doing to some extent). "Marvel is in a position of making a statement simply by making [a female-led] movie, which I think would be a good thing to do. But it has to be a good movie, it has to be a good character, and most of the best characters in Marvel are owned by Fox, let's face it!" When you think about the likes of Jean Grey, Kitty Pryde, and Storm, Whedon has a point! Of course, after revealing that he won't helm the two-part Avengers: Infinity War, could Whedon take the reigns of Captain Marvel and turn things around for female superheroes? Here's hoping!

lol and how many female led movies has Marvel made? There's only Captain Marvel coming up.

What happened to a Black Widow solo film Whedon? It's guaranteed to be a financial success too.

Sexism? Naw, comics were originally created for boys. To this day, most females refuse to watch anything superhero related. So, to appeal to their audience, comic book characters are mostly male who are out saving damsels in distress. I'm addressing classic characters of course, there's no excuse for not elevating newer female characters, however, even teen girls today think superheroes are lame and for little boys.

Most of the famous characters (Storm, Rouge, Invisible Woman) are with Fox but Marvel have managed to make something from nothing. Black Widow, Peggy Carter, Mockingbird, Scarlet Witch, Sif, Gamora, May, Wasp(?) and Quake, and that's just this year. Soon we'll have Captain Marvel, Jessica Jones maybe even the Daughters of the Dragon and Elektra. And from DC we'll have the first, hopefully good female led superhero film in the form of Wonder Woman. We're living in the golden age of CBMs.

It's rather simple Joss. Besides Wonder Woman, Black Widow, Zatanna, and maybe Spider-Woman, there aren't many if any solo female superheroes.

Jean, Storm, Kitty, Rogue = X-Men

Batwoman, Huntress, Batgirl = side kicks/partners/connections to Batman

Supergirl = Superman's cousin

Sue Storm = member of FF

Hawkgirl = connectin to Hawkman

She-Hulk = connection to Hulk

There are many more examples. There aren't all that many solo female heroes who have their own stories so to speak without being a partner/sidekick/connection to a male superhero. Same thing with black superheroes.

Starfire & Raven = Teen Titans

Elektra = Daredevil

well, tbh, there's not a lot of actresses out there really who can play these roles. Very few actually look the part and very few of them can pull off the job. At least J.lo won't be playing any of these characters, thank god

"Catwoman killed it, Elektra dug up the corpse and kicked it fifty times."

Yet Green Lantern didn't suddenly put the kibosh on male-led superhero movies. Or X-Men Origins. It's that double standard that Whedon's talking about and referring to as "there will always be excuses".
