Mark Ruffalo Talks 'Black Widow-Hulk' Relationship In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON And More

As Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Evans comment on Scarlett Johansson filming Age of Ultron with child, Mark Ruffalo dishes on Bruce Banner and Black Widow's relationship in The Avengers sequel. Check it out

“She’s just been great. It really hasn’t slowed us down at all,” Chris Evans told Entertainment Weekly of Scarlett Johansson, who filmed her return as Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron while noticably pregnant with her first child. “She’ll be running around, diving and jumping and doing these things and you’re like ‘She seems like she’s got this.” Adding to his comments previously reported, writer/director Joss Whedon says, “We’re not avoiding any of the danger because the stunt women do the danger — as has always been the case. She’s very central to the movie and when we heard [about the pregnancy] we scheduled things around that.

EW then asked Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. about Johansson's condition, which he says was actually beneficial to the Marvel production. “There’s the element of just God’s grace with Scarlett getting knocked up because that just civilized the whole thing right away,” jokes Downey. “This is not going to be a massive grind. It’s not possible. We have to accommodate the latest news from headquarters, which is: ‘Oh my God, Scarlett Johansson going to have a baby!’” Mark Ruffalo weighs in that Scarlett Johansson was certainly monitored by the cast and crew whenever she wasn't on-camera. “Yeah, they’re very protective of her, and they try not to put her in any difficult situation,” he says. “She’s pregnant, and she’s showing, everyone loves and cares for her, so...”

When Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican was on set for his Avengers: Age of Ultron exclusive, he saw the scene in which Black Widow opens fire on Ultron's Iron Legion, who are attacking the team for the first time, while Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner is seen taking cover. “He’s trying not to Hulk-out,” Ruffalo said. “He knows all the science of his body, what does anger, what does excitement do physiologically speaking. You can’t have deep breathing and anxiety at one time. So he’s worked on controlling this stuff, he knows what he has to do to do it while it’s going down I’m just laying in there because I don’t know how else to be. It’s basically like she said: ‘Do not go green.’” He continued, “In their relationship, she protects him. She kind of becomes his bodyguard, in a weird way. He goes with it. I mean, Bruce, he’s a pacifist, man.”

Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Cobie Smulders Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, with Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, and James Spader. The film is set for release on May 1, 2015.

In this age, they should have no problem covering it up. Use a lot of stunt-doubles, get physical scenes out of the way before it gets bigger, and cover it up anyway possible.

Urgh. So Black Widow needs to hide behind a man for protection? That goes against her character that we've seen so far.
Grrr. Why does she need a "relationship" with every Avenger? Just because she's the only female member on the team does not mean they have to write a flirtation/relationship with everyone on the team.

I'd much rather them bring back Liv Tyler as Betty Ross to help him control the Hulk, since she's previously been the only woman who can.

I think she'll be written out.

ScarJo is doing a "Nolan" and seems to be way over this franchise already. Which I don't mind, I think it's time for Ms Marvel anyway. Give us a Carol cameo!

So, still not official confirmation of a romantic relationship...

im glad they could hide it well, although an insanly pregnant scarlett johanson fighting ultron could have been really funny, too bad jessica alba already did it.

"Urgh. So Black Widow needs to hide behind a man for protection? That goes against her character that we've seen so far."

I'm sorry, where did you read that? He says she is protecting HIM, his bodyguard, etc. Of course he doesn't mean literally, but seems like she's simply trying to help him remain focused and in control. I may have skimmed too much, but I saw nothing about her hiding behind a man for protection.

"Grrr. Why does she need a "relationship" with every Avenger? Just because she's the only female member on the team does not mean they have to write a flirtation/relationship with everyone on the team."

All the Avengers have a relationship with each other. Again, I see no mention of romantic relationship.

Sounds like she's the one doing the protecting, not hiding behind anyone.

Wait wait wait. When did they confirm they were in a relationship. And does it realt matter? In the quote, it says that widow is banners bodyguard. She's not being protected by a man she's protecting the man from becoming a monster

People are quick to hate and don't even read shit through. Lmao.

According to some it seems like whoever Black Widow talks to in the films, she's automatically flirting. The Logic. Black Widow is here to stay and slay.

"Have to agree with Cherry, Widow always seemed like the type of woman who doesn't mix work and pleasure. But that's Hollywood for you, everything needs a love story."

I agree too, but I think both of you are reading things that aren't stated.

There is NO mention of a romantic relationship. EVERY one has a relationship. I have a relationship with my Dad, doesn't mean I'm sleeping with the guy.

Awesome. To be fair, a lot of guys DO think if a woman is talking to you, she's automatically flirting. So it's at least consistent.

But yeah, come on peeps, read carefully.

I would kind of agree with the sentiment of "why she has to have a relationship with every character," in any other circumstance, but this is the avengers and the character is black widow. The avengers teams are know for being "fraternization nightmares". Everybody is hooking up, with everybody in the books. In black widow's case, she hasn't been above that sort of thing either, although with her it's hard to tell if it's true love, or her just manipulating men.

You know, about a year ago people have been hanging themselves up on the word "relationship" when it was described between Nat and Steve. It's really more than clear by now they only use this kind of bullshit to stir unrest in the fandom and keep people talking about the movie. It's getting ridiculous. And again, while the party scene has been confirmed, many details that Latino Review has claimed in his "scoop" were not in that scene (Tony wearing his armor, no word of a hammer lifting party). So don't take his scoop for bible. In fact, reading the above, I'm not even above saying, whoever said "they clearly have a thing for each other", apparently thinks, when a woman is trying to be your friend and protect you, she wants to get in your pants, and that is all that is to that whole supposed romance story.
ManDeth
ManDeth - 7/18/2014, 9:33 AM
@CherryBomb He's not talking about Widow at that point. He's talking about the production being protective of Scarjo because she's pregnant. Later he mentions the Widow character is protective of Banner to try to help him avoid The Hulk.

So the illusion and hypocrisy we see in films that women are never protected by men should be intact.

In the realm of political correctness where hypocrisy is mixed with utter lies and mis-characterizations formed to appease one segment of our population, we are required to publically pretend women do not need men to ever protect them. Political correctness is the practice of trying to lie hard enough to make lies become true.

"Urgh. So Black Widow needs to hide behind a man for protection? That goes against her character that we've seen so far."

@CherryBomb, Yeah, I have to echo pretty much EVERYBODY'S response to that. What?? Where is that even close to being hinted at in this article? If anything, it's Bruce that's hiding behind her for protection. I get you don't like how she's potentially in a relationship with him, but that doesn't even come close to "hiding behind a man for protection".

Besides, her being in a relationship with Bruce is actually EMPOWERING. It shows that women don't need to be stuck with ONE guy (Hawkeye) and that's it. We've seen that done to death, and it doesn't accurately reflect actual modern-day relationships. Whedon knows what he's doing.

Black Widow is allowed to have a past history with Hawkeye. She's allowed to be flirty and have a strong working relationship with Cap. And she's certainly allowed to have a romantic attachment with Banner. Look at how interesting and compelling that relationship is ALREADY. The roles are reversed: SHE is protecting HIM. It's really awesome stuff.

I doubt they would confirm that Bruce and Widow and in some kind of ROMANTIC relationship, but this at least gives me a little more of hope. I don't want to see her reduced to a love interest. Her character has more depth than that.
