If you haven't already purchased Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron 'Art of the Movie' book, then you'll surely get a kick out of these initial designs for the titular villain, played by James Spader. Specifically showing how Ultron's 'Prime' and 'Ultimate' forms might have looked, the various concept art pieces are illustrated by Andy Park, Phil Saunders, Charlie Wen, and Ryan Meinerding.

Marvel Studios presents Avengers: Age of Ultron, the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure. Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision. Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” published in 1963. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in Avengers: Age of Ultron May 1, 2015.

A lot of those are terrible. Some are fantastic.

Still, I'm very happy with the design we got in the film.

The only thing i didnt like about the final ultron design was it did look a little puffy in the face. I preferred the design that he had when he was getting the cradle and fighting cap in the truck (the one that that final form destroyed in front of nat) but im still happy with what we got

They definitely should have gone with either of these two

I'm just glad that they didn't have to use time travel to fix a convoluted storyline

I don't know why, but I LOVE the design of a robot wearing a cape/hood. I have literally no idea why. Master Chief in the teaser for Halo 5, Megatron in that one scene in Transformers 3, Ultron when he sat on that throne in the church, and some of the concept art here.

@AsgardianHobo I wanted to apologize to AsgardianHobo, that shit the other day was childish and really uncalled for.

I think we all need to remember that these are [frick]ing comic book movies and not art house films. Lol

I really didn't care for this take on Ultron. I thought he was too human. It didn't make Ultron sinister or scared enough for me.
Too many plot holes in the movie hurt it too.

(and yes I know Master Chief isn't a robot, shut up)

@XMenMarvelFan If you were a real XmenMarvelFan you would know Marvel has Vibranium, Fox has Adamantium.

@XMenMarvelFan what do you mean? They got the rights to adamantium, but marvel has vibranium rights so i thought they would just make ultron vibranium as opposed to adamatium. BUT WAS HE VIBRANIUM?

TONY STARK SAID YOU ARE SIPPING A VIBRANIUM COCKTAIL, BUT THE ARMOR DID NOT ACT RESISTANT LIKE VIBRANIUM

the worst thing about Ultron in the movie is that they gave him lips and made it so he had to move his lips to talk...it was stupid. it's not like if his mouth didn't move his words would be muffled. it ruined Ultron for me. that and his much unneeded sense of humor.

Which design would have included a better written Ultron and one who could stand on his own against Hulk?
grif

some of these have lips and eyelids. wtf? also the one with the cat face? gtfo

robots do NOT need to show facial expressions.

really looking forward to this book though

@DrKinsolving @legopieface @shocknick Damn it... I read that as Admantium and not Vibranium.

Would've loved if Ultron followed the first two designs we saw on film, but rejected his humanity before the final act and went with one of the Annihilation Conquest looking designs!

After watching it again... I'm afraid the combination of Ultron's designs and mannerisms they went with didn't really work all that well for me. :(
