Saoirse Ronan Addresses Possibility Of Playing Scarlet Witch In THE AVENGERS Sequel

Saoirse Ronan discusses recent reports of her being considered to play Scarlet Witch in Marvel's The Avengers 2, saying that she's heard these rumors and that she would love to take the role if offered.

A couple weeks ago, it was reported that Marvel and writer-director Joss Whedon were looking at young actress Saoirse Ronan (The Host, Hanna) as a "protoype" for the character Scarlet Witch in The Avengers sequel. Of course, as the script for the untitled follow-up is being written right now, no offer has been made. Speaking with The Mary Sue while promoting Violet & Daisy, Ronan was asked if she's heard these reports and whether or not she was interested, and had this to say. "I have heard about it and yes, I would. Yeah, of course I would. I love Joss and I love those films, and I love his handle on them and how he portrayed these kinds of superheroes. I think it’s very different from what anyone else has done. So yeah, I’d love to be in it."

Joss Whedon recently confirmed that both Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will be in The Avengers 2, saying that, "they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier." Could the brother/sister duo - best known as the children of X-Men's Magneto - end up being villains in the sequel, rather than members of the team? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

With production beginning in the UK early next year, The Avengers 2 is set to hit theaters May 1st, 2015. Would you like to see Saoirse Ronan as Scarlet Witch? And who should play Quicksilver?

I love her, so I wouldn't mind at all if she does get the role. I'll be surprised if Whedon doesn't consider Summer Glau too, though - as much as I love Ronan, I can only see Glau pulling Wanda better!

She's a very amazing and lovely actress (and very much so beautiful), but I'd say leave Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch out of Avengers 2. If it means for Marvel/Joss to change those two characters in terms of their background history from comics, then no thank you. I know that this is only the first draft that Joss turned in for Marvel, and that there's still enough time for it to be changed or altered at any point.
If Marvel Studios were to (miraculously) buy back the X-Men movie rights, and wanted to include Pietro and Wanda in Avengers 2, then I wouldn't mind it at all. But seeing as how that won't come (Marvel getting back the rights to X-Men) for quite some time, I'd say leave the two out of it.

She has the acting chops is a real beauty.

I would wonder how the Scarlet Witch costume translates to screen. It just doesn't seem realistic that a woman would walk around on the streets like that.

But fanboys will go crazy because they want to see some scantily clad woman with a big rack in the role.

Are you one of those people who think that because SW & QS are mutants, they have more history with the Xmen than Avengers? That would be false by the way.

Sorry but SW & QS are Avengers first. It would be like making Robin a member of the Justice League instead of Teen Titans because of his history with Batman.

IF Saoirse does get the role as Scarlet Witch, I highly doubt they'd have her dress up like this....




Or, they could go with this here design for her....

@ParisSun - Certainly not, my friend. I'm saying this 'cause I can't see how they can use these two characters and not associate them being mutants, which they are. Believe me, I'd really like them to be a part of the Avengers, I do, but to have them on the Avengers and not associate them to being mutants and being something else entirely sin't what I'd want for these characters.

just because they "disagree" with the Avengers doesn't mean they're villains. They could be on the team and not agree with what the team is or does.

Ronan is a great choice, she's a brilliant actress, love her in anything, except the Host, why was she in that movie? She doesn't need to have a huge rack or anything, that is just the standard depiction of most women in comics.

Felton would also be a great choice, would love to see him in a non villainous role.

The Host was a terrible movie because the source was the chick who wrote the Twilight movies. Nothing was going to save that movie.

I think MCU is just going to have to creat a work around on the mutant issue. It will be a cold day in Hell before they get back rights to Xmen, FF, or Spiderman. The best thing they can do is work with the characters they have. Extremis and the tessaract will probably be used to explain a lot. Kind of sucks but fans have to understand business vs. fantasy. And the general public will not care or know either way.

I also like that ultimate look. It would make sense in a movie. Although I wouldn't mind seeing an actress in that second costume.:) But we know that Disney moms and NOW would blow a gasket. Not worth the headache. I'll get my fix at DragonCon.

great actress though, never really considered her for such a role since i pictured someone older being cast as Wanda but she'd be fine.

Also, to get on the "mutant" issue, I think a lot of people are very confused by the contracts that Marvel has with Fox and will be surprised that "mutants" could end up being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, After all, there is no copyright issue with "mutants" themselves since it is an actual scientific term that can not be copyrighted to begin with. The only issue is the way in which it relates to the X-Men franchise which will simply be left out of the MCU and SW & QS's family history will simply be left a mystery as they will likely be orphans. Simple.
