Avengers Director Joss Whedon: Why He Left Television For Earth's Mightiest Heroes

In an excerpt from an interview conducted by CBM's Edward Gross and appearing in SciFi Now magazine, Joss Whedon offers up his reasoning for turning away from television following the cancellation of Dollhouse and his embracing of The Avengers.

Reflects Whedon, “I think I already had left television. The plan had been to dive into the world of self-produced, internet, tiny stuff, which my wife was very excited about – I mean it, she said, ‘I’ve been waiting my entire life for you to do this’ – and then I turned around and said, ‘I’m doing the opposite’ and she said, ‘Great, okay!’ She’s good that way. Obviously there were basically two roads we talked about – one was a huge project that needs a total re-write that you can walk into and make, but there’s no reason to think that that would ever happen. And the other is self-producing stuff, either having something really big or really small, but not trying to truck down the middle road where you have all the interference of a big project, and the feeling of a small project. It’s more about doing it by the seat of your pants, but definitely one or the other. It doesn’t mean I won’t be doing TV forever, it just means it’s time to do something else.”

Previously posted on CBM is this audio interview with Whedon from which this excerpt was culled, and during which he discusses more fully his feelings about The Avengers.

I would like to see the original Zak Penn script to see what the original story was and how much Whedon altered it.I also would like to see what changes he made to Captain America to better connect it to Avengers.

@tazmaniak that would be amazing I mean then we can really judge how it works. Like if the avengers sucks but then we see the original script was so much worse and he did a lot of changes that were good. Their is also goign to be a lot he wont be aloud to change that they wanted in there like spider-man 3 and venom how he was forced in the movie (Part of the reason I think Rami was like how gay can I make all the venom stuff in this)

Can't wait for this next volley of Marvel movie masterpieces! Cap, Thor, Avengers and all the inevitable sequels! The cartoon is great, the company is moving into TV and it's a great time to be a comic book fan! Huzzah!

If he gets The Avengers right (which I'm sure he will) I don't think we'll see the assholes at Fox cancel any more of his TV shows, lol! Directing a movie like this will pretty much allow Whedon to do whatever he pleases in future! Just look at how Jon Favreau's profile has been raised since Iron Man in 2008! Good luck to Whedon. He's a great writer/director IMO. Still angry about Hank and Jan though... :P

@PiotrRasputin

Sam has said many times he did the best he could with Venom. It was a bad idea and he did not want to do it but it gave it his best shot. He is a Fan just like you and to think he would intentionally insult other Fans is not a very nice thing to say and quite untrue.

@JoshW

Fox admitted a while ago that the main reason Dollhouse got a second season is because they knew Joss had a huge Fanbase. Rather than going through the inevitable letter campaign to save the show they just decided to give Joss another Season. His fans saved that show and did not have to lift a finger to do it.

Personally I never liked Dollhouse because to me the whole crew were about as evil as you can get. Hard for me to relate to a bunch of people I think should be shot. My wife loved it though. I think she has a thing for Eliza. *grins*

TheDarqueOne I refuse to believe that he gave Venom his best shot, all his other villains were inspired and true to character, what the hell was up with Venom?

@breakUbatman

Sam is an old school guy. He was not reading comics when Venom appeared and does not know him. It is the same with me. I know the name/specs but to me Sandman is a classic and Venom just a new guy.

Can I pick up a bunch of comics and read about Venom sure. But that ain't going to make me a Fan just a little more knowledgeable. Sam is a Fan of Sandman and Vulture and would have told a remarkable story about them.

If you do not know the Character and he is not the kind of Character you read it is tough to do him justice. Venom deserved the whole movie but for that to happen Sam would have had to just bend over for the Studio and remove Sandman. Raimi is not that kind of guy so he tried to do the impossible and it did not work.

It was wrong to replace Vulture (who was going to be played by Sir Ben freaking Kingsley) with Venom. Nobody, and I mean nobody, could have done any better than Sam and company did. You cannot make something that [frick]ed up into gold.
